Book Designing for Small Screens

Download or read book Designing for Small Screens written by Studio 7.5 and published by AVA Publishing. This book was released on 2005-10 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of interactive applications or presentations on small screens can be challenging for the designer. Not all design concepts that are valid on larger screens can be implemented on the small screen. A multitude of different devices with dissimilar technical specifications fall under the category of small- screen interfaces. Devices in this category differ in size and type of their display, in the nature of their physical interaction and in their performance. This book equips the student or practitioner with the appropriate tools with which to develop functional concepts and realise good designs for small screens. In order to tackle and visualise complex design issues, each of the ten chapters in this book is structured in three segments. The first section is dedicated to theoretical reflection, and an overview of the fundamental design options that relate to the specific issue in question. The second section offers examples of good working practice and application of the theory described, and the final section offers useful background information, such as an explanation of the technical terms that will help you to make informed design decisions. Selling points- shows professional designers and students how to develop functional concepts and good design for the small screen, and pertinent subject given advancing technology in mobile phones, palm- top computers and other small-screen devices. Readership - both professional designers and students alike. Authors Professor Carola Zwick; studied at the University of Arts Berlin where she gained an MA in Industrial Design. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We witness an era with more screens than ever before, and within each screen, a multitude of visual varieties. Lisa Gotto investigates this medial diversity as a field of tension between large and small forms of digital image culture. This includes, on the one hand, the immersive potential of large image arrangements, such as digital 3D cinema, and, on the other hand, the compactness of mobile image forms, such as those of the smartphone film or the media practices of Instagram. Weaving together a rich variety of examples and sources, this book presents a multifaceted collection of essays that explore the transformational potential of digital media culture, contextualize its media-technical conditions, and reflect on its social consequences.

Download or read book Rood Screens written by Richard Hayman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rood screen was the visual focus of the medieval parish church, dividing the nave from the chancel. Most were built of wood and were adorned with intricate carved decoration painted in bright colours, often with images of saints. Defaced and often dismantled during the Reformation in the mid-sixteenth century, most surviving screens have been restored to their former glory since the nineteenth century and are now among the most prized treasures of our parish churches. This fully illustrated book explains the symbolic and practical significance of rood screens and describes the ways in which they were constructed and decorated. There is also an extensive list of churches in England and Wales where screens can be found.

Book Ambient Screens and Transnational Public Spaces

Download or read book Ambient Screens and Transnational Public Spaces written by Nikos Papastergiadis and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large public screens have now become a ubiquitous part of the contemporary cityscape. Far from being simply oversized televisions, the media experts contributing to Ambient Screens and Transnational Public Spaces put forward a strong case that such screens could serve as important sites for cultural exchange. Advances in digital technology spell the possibilities of conducting mobile modes of interaction across national boundaries, and in the process expose the participants to novel sensory experiences, giving rise to a new form of public culture. Understanding this phenomenon calls for a reconceptualization of “public space” and “ambience,” as well as connecting the two concepts with each other. This pioneering study of the impact of media platforms on urban cultural life presents a theoretical analysis and a history of screens, followed by discussions of site-specific urban screen practices on five continents. There is also a substantial examination of the world’s first real-time cross-cultural exchange via the networking of large public screens located in Melbourne and Seoul. “Ambient Screens and Transnational Public Spaces is a provocative interdisciplinary collection that studies public screens in diverse urban contexts ranging from Shanghai to Montreal. Taken together, these essays redefine commonly held notions about cultural policy, information, citizenship, and the quotidian experiences of the Media City. A must read for anyone interested in urban media studies and cultural planning.” —Janine Marchessault, Professor of Cinema and Media Studies, York University “Large screens in public spaces are almost taken for granted in some cities, while in others, they are barely present. This fascinating book provokes new thinking about mediatization as a transformative dimension of urban life. The editor and authors deserve to be congratulated for a welcome and timely volume, demonstrating how large screens in cities transform public spaces and become a platform for new modes of cultural exchange.” —Lily Kong, Lee Kong Chian Chair Professor of Social Sciences, Singapore Management University

Book Small Screen Big Feels

Download or read book Small Screen Big Feels written by Melissa Ames and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While television has always played a role in recording and curating history, shaping cultural memory, and influencing public sentiment, the changing nature of the medium in the post-network era finds viewers experiencing and participating in this process in new ways. They skim through commercials, live tweet press conferences and award shows, and tune into reality shows to escape reality. This new era, defined by the heightened anxiety and fear ushered in by 9/11, has been documented by our media consumption, production, and reaction. In Small Screen, Big Feels, Melissa Ames asserts that TV has been instrumental in cultivating a shared memory of emotionally charged events unfolding in the United States since September 11, 2001. She analyzes specific shows and genres to illustrate the ways in which cultural fears are embedded into our entertainment in series such as The Walking Dead and Lost or critiqued through programs like The Daily Show. In the final section of the book, Ames provides three audience studies that showcase how viewers consume and circulate emotions in the post-network era: analyses of live tweets from Shonda Rhimes's drama, How to Get Away with Murder (2010–2020), ABC's reality franchises, The Bachelor (2002–present) and The Bachelorette (2003–present), and political coverage of the 2016 Presidential Debates. Though film has been closely studied through the lens of affect theory, little research has been done to apply the same methods to television. Engaging an impressively wide range of texts, genres, media, and formats, Ames offers a trenchant analysis of how televisual programming in the United States responded to and reinforced a cultural climate grounded in fear and anxiety.

Book Physical and Optical Properties of Projection Screens

Download or read book Physical and Optical Properties of Projection Screens written by Robert J. Klaiber and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scattered, inconsistent and incomplete data in the literature have prompted a comprehensive study of the physical and optical properties of projection screens. A large sample number of front and rear projection screens was obtained, representing the industry line of January 1965. The reflected and transmitted flux distribution of each sample was measured using a small, collimated test beam of white light incident normally and at 45 degrees. A vacuum photodetector, spectrally matched to the eye, was situated on a radius arm and capable of viewing the test sample at any angle in a plane. The reflectance or transmittance of the samples was calculated using data from the measured reflected flux distribution of an easily reproduced magnesium oxide standard. Measurements were made of resolving power and physical properties, and the maximum angular viewing field of each screen was determined for a typical projection geometry and tolerable field brightness gradient.
