Book MANAGING TECHNOLOGY FOR SMALL RUMINANTS PRODUCTION SYSTEMS IN NIGERIA

Download or read book MANAGING TECHNOLOGY FOR SMALL RUMINANTS PRODUCTION SYSTEMS IN NIGERIA written by Boladale Abiola Adebowale and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research examined the existing traditional livestock system as well as modern livestock system. It centers on assessment of traditional small ruminant within the domestic environment of an under-developed economy. The study focuses on the small ruminants, because the large ruminants have been a subject of intense empirical policy studies whilst little data exist on Africa s small ruminants. In spite of this fact, Africa s supply of protein from large ruminants remains inadequate making it imperative for research at the scientific and policy levels to examine alternatives. The overarching reason for considering small ruminants is their considerable adaptability to the harsh tropical environment, and the relatively cheaper cost of production compared to large ruminants. This study covers the South western and Northern parts of Nigeria and we found that in the southwest, inspite of considerable market demand for small ruminants, farmers breed them largely for home consumption, and out of long held traditional beliefs rather than income generation. In the North, they breed livestock largely for commercial purpose thereby deriving a larger proportion of their income from it.

Book Characterisation of Small Ruminants Breeding Practices in Kenya

Download or read book Characterisation of Small Ruminants Breeding Practices in Kenya written by Samuel Mwanzia Mbuku and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Kenya, management of small ruminants in pastoral production systems involves application of indigenous knowledge pertaining to animal breeds and breeding practices. Characterisation of such indigenous knowledge has so far received little attention. This study was carried out in Marsabit County in Kenya among the Rendille and Gabra communities, and aimed at characterising breeding practices in relation to implementation of community-based breeding programmes. This entailed the determination of animal identification systems, and actual and theoretical pastoral selection practices for breeding bucks and rams. In addition, the factors that bring about the differences between the actual and theoretical selection practices were identified. This study showed that pastoralists have intricate knowledge and approaches in identification of their animals and have deliberate breeding practises. Productive and adaptive traits were found important in the selection of breeding stock. This study provides a framework needed for the development of community-based genetic improvement programmes for small ruminant genetic resources within the constraints of slowly changing pastoral conditions.

Book Review on Challenges and Opportunities of Small Ruminant Production Under Mixed Farming System in Oromiya Regional State Ethiopia

Download or read book Review on Challenges and Opportunities of Small Ruminant Production Under Mixed Farming System in Oromiya Regional State Ethiopia written by Henok Mulatu and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review brief sheep and goat management practices, marketing systems, constraints and opportunities in the country to deliver summarized and synthesized information for the beneficiaries, users and help the researchers to develop well-organized strategies to improve their productivity in Ethiopia. In Ethiopia sheep and goats are mostly kept by smallholders and the rural poor, including women headed households. The trend in Ethiopian sheep and goat under mixed production systems are normally kept in small flocks and opportunities to increase their production a result of the increasing human population in most highland areas, the practice of restraining and housing these small ruminants is on the rise. Improvements to increase productivity and sustainable development of small ruminants in different farming systems of the country in innovative approach so as to meet the demands of the human population.Depending on this review it is imperative to practice modern production systems with better technology in urban and rural areas to improve the traditional system through feed supplementation and better health care.

Book Tackling Climate Change Through Livestock

Download or read book Tackling Climate Change Through Livestock written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2013 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greenhouse gas emissions by the livestock sector could be cut by as much as 30 percent through the wider use of existing best practices and technologies. FAO conducted a detailed analysis of GHG emissions at multiple stages of various livestock supply chains, including the production and transport of animal feed, on-farm energy use, emissions from animal digestion and manure decay, as well as the post-slaughter transport, refrigeration and packaging of animal products. This report represents the most comprehensive estimate made to-date of livestocks contribution to global warming as well as the sectors potential to help tackle the problem. This publication is aimed at professionals in food and agriculture as well as policy makers.
