Book Smith Mountain Dam and Lake

Download or read book Smith Mountain Dam and Lake written by James A. Nagy and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction of a dam in the gap of Smith Mountain in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, had been considered as early as the 1920s. However, the dam's construction did not begin until 1960. Smith Mountain Dam closed the gap completely in 1963, and Smith Mountain Lake began to fill and form behind it. The hydroelectric dam consists of 175,000 cubic yards of concrete and has the capacity to generate 605 megawatts of electricity for up to 11 hours. Smith Mountain Dam is part of a two-dam system on the Roanoke River, and its companion dam, the Leesville Dam, is a smaller structure designed to pump water back to Smith Mountain Lake and to also generate hydroelectric power for American Electric Power (AEP) customers. Smith Mountain Lake covers 20,000 acres and has a 500-mile shoreline, which borders Franklin, Pittsylvania, and Bedford Counties. Over the years, development near and around Smith Mountain Lake has exploded, and this has presented both opportunities and challenges in regard to stewardship of the area's natural resources.

Book Leighton s High Sierra Check Dam Legacy

Download or read book Leighton s High Sierra Check Dam Legacy written by Steve D. Bowman and published by Xlibris. This book was released on 2006 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This photographic journal chronicles the history and construction of the high Sierra check dams from the first one at Yellowhammer Lake in 1920 through the last one constructed at High Emigrant Lake in 1951, past the establishment of the Emigrant Wilderness in 1975, and through various stages of support and opposition which are on-going to this day. Each major period in either check dam construction or the period after is divided into separate chapters, with each check dam described in detail with historical and recent photographs, many that have never been published. In addition, available historical writings and records of Fred Leighton and others were utilized to provide a more in depth perspective on the check dams from those directly involved in construction and/or maintenance. Outdoor enthusiasts discovering the Emigrant Wilderness of the high Sierra for the first time might easily consider it a pristine wilderness, rich in wildlife, streams, lakes, and scenic views. And yet, this is one area where the hand of man has worked to enrich the natural landscape. One of the most notable changes man has made in this area is the construction of small rock dams at the outlet of selected lakes and meadows. These dams were called check dams by Fred W. Leighton, who developed the concept of raising the water level of natural lakes and meadows for fishery and riparian enhancement. These check dams provide an enhanced habitat for mountain fish by providing additional water flow in the late summer months when natural streams typically run very low or completely dry.

Taran and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upper and Lower Apple Mountain Dams are two impounding structures with the tailwater of the Upper Dam being the reservoir water surface of the Lower Dam. The Upper Dam is an earthen embankment about 351 feet long and 34.5 feet high, while the Lower Lake Dam is an earthen embankment about 377 feet long and 32.9 feet high. The dams are classified as small dams with a hazard classification of significant based on location. The emergency spillway for each dam is an earthen channel located at the left abutment of each dam. Based on criteria established by the Department of the Army, Office of the Chief of Engineers (OCE), the Spillway Design Flood (SDF) is the 100-year flood for each. The emergency spillway of the upper dam will pass 6 percent of the PMF and 100 percent of the SDF without overtopping while the lower dam will pass 4 percent of the PMF and 100 percent of the SDF without overtopping. Therefore, the spillway of each dam is adjudged as adequate.
