Book excerpt: Starch is a group of poly saccharides, composed of glucopyranose units joined together by glucosidric linkages. Starch is also metabolized for energy in plants and animals, and is used to produce a large number of industrial products. Starch is processed to produce many of the sugars in processed foods. The biggest industrial non food use of starch is as adhesive in the paper making process. Other important fields of starch application are textiles, cosmetic and pharmaceutical uses. Starch can be obtained from maize, sorghum, roots and tubers such as tapioca, arrow root, potatoes etc. Starch truly serves as a multifunctional ingredient in the food industry. Starch is one of the most present biomaterials has witnessed significant developments over the years. By products are obtained in the manufacture of different types of starch such as maize gluten has a number of interesting possible uses in industry, zein (by product of corn processing) is used in the preparation of stable glass like plastics, modification of zien is used as adhesives and in the preparation of coating compositions for paper, the most important by product from wheat starch manufacture is gluten which is used in preparing diabetic foods, for feeding cattle, thickening agent in textile printing and so on. The Global starch market is likely to get respite from deceleration in its market growth, with growth poised to receive a new lease of life in the next few years. This book basically illustrates about the properties, structures, manufacturing process explained with flowcharts and diagrams, applications of starch and its derivatives etc. The major contents of the book are structure and chemical properties of starch, chemical composition, molecular structure, starch granule properties, water sorption and granule swelling as a function of relative humidity, factors affecting starch paste properties, the oxidation of starch etc. This is a unique book, concise, up to date resource offering a valuable presentation of the subject. Book Sago Palm

Download or read book Sago Palm written by Hiroshi Ehara and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book addresses a wide variety of events and technologies concerning the sago palm, ranging from its botanical characteristics, culture and use to social conditions in the places where it is grown, in order to provide a record of research findings and to benefit society. It discusses various subjects, including the sago palm and related species; differentiation of species of starch-producing palm; habitat, morphological, physiological and growth characteristics; culture and management; productivity of carbon dioxide; starch extraction and manufacture; characteristics and utilization of starch; and cultural anthropological and folkloristic aspects. Problems such as food shortages due to increasing populations, global warming and climate change, and decreasing reserves of oil and other underground resources, have become more pressing in recent years. In the context of these problems, the book examines the role of the sago palm in sustainable food production, in the manufacture of other foodstuffs, as a raw material for ethanol and in the manufacture of biodegradable plastics. In addition to academics, this book will be useful to researchers and government officials working for international agencies, national governments, municipalities, and other research organizations; technicians, researchers, managers, entrepreneurs, and others working in industries such as agriculture, plant production, food production, manufacturing, chemical engineering, energy production, and distribution.

Book Production Technology of Underutilized Vegetable Crops

Download or read book Production Technology of Underutilized Vegetable Crops written by Savita and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-20 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the nutraceutical importance, production technologies, management and cultivation practices of underutilized vegetables, which can be described as those vegetable crops which are neither grown commercially on a large scale nor traded widely. While much of the crops addressed in the book are cultivated, traded and consumed at the local level, there are over 60 species of minor vegetables with high growth and yield potentials that are not cultivated to a large extent for greater populations. This work highlights the production technologies needed to grow these vegetables on a larger scale and under various adverse soil and climatic conditions, and their nutritional and medical benefits to assist with food security, health and poverty alleviation in rural areas. Production of underutilized vegetables is low, due to the unavailability of planting material, lack of awareness about the nutritional and medicinal importance among the farmers and inadequate information on the production techniques of these crops. In this context, there is an urgent need to take up a program on genetic resources exploration, management, utilization, and improvement of underutilized vegetable crops to ensure food and nutritional security. Readers will learn about these technologies and practices, while also learning about the unique properties and benefits of these underutilized vegetables. The book will be useful for academicians and researchers focusing on vegetable production and breeding, as well as farmers and sustainability scientists looking for underexplored sources of nutrition to benefit large rural populations.

Book Addressing Marketing and Processing Constraints that Inhibit Agrifood Exports

Download or read book Addressing Marketing and Processing Constraints that Inhibit Agrifood Exports written by Michael John Westlake and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main objectives of the Agreement on Agriculture (AoA) negotiated under the Uruguay Round is to improve the access of developing countries to foreign markets. Constraints in the domestic supply chains of many countries, along with weak marketing support and trade facilitation services, have prevented them, however, from exploiting the opportunities provided by the AoA and by other agreements to improve market access. The aim of this guide is to inform policy analysts on issues that should be considered while developing policies and measures to break the main processing and marketing constraints that prevent their countries from fully exploiting their agrifood export potential.

Book Insurance of Crops in Developing Countries

Download or read book Insurance of Crops in Developing Countries written by Richard A. J. Roberts and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is primarily concerned with risks to arable and horticultural crops, and the applicability of insurance to managing these risks. Its purpose is to provide an introductory overview of crop and forestry insurance. It begins by defining the boundaries for these types of insurance products in order to assist those interested in exploring and exploiting this financial mechanism. It then outlines how to proceed with planning for crop insurance within the established boundaries. While recognizing that classic, damage-based and yield-based insurance products account for the bulk of all crop insurance written globally, the booklet also points out the dynamism of research and development into new insurance mechanisms. It presents two fairly new insurance products: the first based on insuring a level of crop revenue, and the second where insurable damage is determined on the basis of an index derived from data external to the insured farm. While some of the example material is taken from agriculture and forestry in developed countries, the basic target group of readers is expected to be those concerned with crop and forest risk management in developing parts of the world. This publication will be of interest to farmer unions, producer/commodity groups, processors, marketing firms and others contracting with farmer producers, officials of Ministries of Agriculture, Planning and Commerce, and bankers and insurers with farming and forestry clients.
