Book Small High Repetition Rate HF and DF Lasers

Download or read book Small High Repetition Rate HF and DF Lasers written by Walter A. Riessler and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements are presented of the multiline spectral output, output power as a function of pulse-repetition rate, and V-I (voltage-current) characteristics of small pulsed hydrogen fluoride (HF) and deuterium fluoride (DF) lasers that have been operated at repetition rates up to 1 kHz. Results indicate that observed reductions in output power at high repetition rates are due to an insufficient gas flow that (1) allows the ground state population to build up, (2) reduces population inversion between the first vibrational state and the ground state, and (3) introduces discharge instabilities that severely limit the pulse-rate capabilities. Average powers are reported to vary linearly with pulse-repetition rate up to 400 Hz, with typical pulse energies of 10 and 4 mJ for small HF and DF lasers respectively with discharge lengths of only 10 cm. Book Electric Pulse Initiated Chemical Laser

Download or read book Electric Pulse Initiated Chemical Laser written by R. I. Rudko and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study deals with a high-repetition-rate multispectral laser source providing simultaneous emission on many lines in the 2.5-3.0 micron, 3.5-4.0 micron, and 4.3-5.0 micron regions. This program was an experimental investigation to assess the operational characteristics of compact, high-repetition-rate mid-infrared laser sources capable of multispectral operation. An HF/DF/HBr, electrically-initiated TE chemical laser was originally selected as a good candidate for such a system. HBr was found not to be a suitable laser medium for a small system, owing to its low gain. An HF-laser-pumped, isotopic CO2 laser was selected to replace it and to cover the 4.3-5.0 micron region. This laser was investigated in an extension of the original contract. The HF/DF chemical laser was capable of sustaining up to 10,000 discharges per second in gas mixtures containing SF6 and, separately or jointly, H2 and D2. Over 1 millijoule per pulse outputs were obtained up to 4,200 pps in HF, weaker outputs being still available even at the 10,000 pps repetition rate. Peak average powers were 4.5 W for HF and 2.0 W for DF lasers. The laser was operated in a recirculating mode to make efficient use of the reactant gases. Chemical scrubbers were used to remove the discharge and reaction products, thus improving laser performance. Atmospheric pressure operation of this system was also achieved.

Book High Conductivity Channels in Space

Download or read book High Conductivity Channels in Space written by Victor Apollonov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-03 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the physics of conductive channel development in space, air and vacuums and summarizes the attempts to create super-long conductive channels to study the upper atmosphere and to complete specific tasks related to energy transmission from the space to earth with high-voltage high repetition rate electrical sources. Conductive channels are produced by the laser jet engine vehicle-propulsion under the influence of powerful high repetition rate pulse-periodic laser radiation by CO2-laser, solid state Nd YAG,HF/DF laser systems generated with each pulse of the powerful laser conductive dust plasma. The book also presents the experimental and theoretical results of conductive canal modeling: the laser jet engine vehicle “Impulsar”, which can reach the lower layers of the ionosphere in several hundred seconds. Further, the book explores the development of lightning protection systems. The so-called long laser spark is generated to provide the conditions for connecting a thunderstorm cloud with a grounded metal rod, i.e. a classical lightning rod. Such conductivity channels can be used for energy transmission, overvoltage protection systems, transport of charged particle beams and plasma antennas. It provides the theoretical and experimental basis of high repetition rate P-P mode of operation for high power lasers (COIL, HF/DF, CO2,Nd YAG). It describes high efficiency and excellent beam quality disk lasers used for numerous applications, including surface treatment of dielectric materials in microelectronics, cutting, drilling, welding, polishing and cleaning of the surface and other technological operations. Lastly it investigates how megawatt mono-module disk lasers could be used to solve various problems: small satellites launched by lasers, formation of super-long conducting channels in space and atmosphere, cleaning of the near-earth space from the space debris and related applications.

Download or read book High Power Optics written by Victor V. Apollonov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the basics, realization and materials for high power laser systems and high power radiation interaction with matter. The physical and technical fundamentals of high intensity laser optics and adaptive optics and the related physical processes in high intensity laser systems are explained. A main question discussed is: What is power optics? In what way is it different from ordinary optics widely used in cameras, motion-picture projectors, i.e., for everyday use? An undesirable consequence of the thermal deformation of optical elements and surfaces was discovered during studies of the interaction with powerful incident laser radiation. The requirements to the fabrication, performance and quality of optical elements employed within systems for most practical applications are also covered. The high-power laser performance is generally governed by the following: (i) the absorption of incident optical radiation (governed primarily by various absorption mechanisms), (ii) followed by a temperature increase and response governed primarily by thermal properties and (iii) the thermo-optical and thermo-mechanical response of distortion, stress, fracture, etc. All this needs to be understood to design efficient, compact, reliable and useful high power systems for many applications under a variety of operating conditions, pulsed, continuous wave and burst mode of varying duty cycles. The book gives an overview of an important spectrum of related topics like laser resonator configurations, intermetallic optical coatings, heat carriers for high power optics, cellular materials, high-repetition-rate lasers and mono-module disk lasers for high power optics.

Book High Repetition Rate Fiber Lasers

Download or read book High Repetition Rate Fiber Lasers written by Jian Chen (Ph. D.) and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reports work in high repetition rate femtosecond fiber lasers. Driven by the applications including optical arbitrary waveform generation, high speed optical sampling, frequency metrology, and timing and frequency distribution via fiber links, low noise fiber laser sources operating at multi-gigahertz repetition rates are developed systematically. A 200 MHz fundamentally mode-locked soliton laser and a 200 MHz fundamentally mode-locked similariton laser are first developed. Intra-cavity soliton formation is recognized as the optimum route towards achieving high fundamental repetition rates compact lasers, under the limitation of realistically available pump power. A 3 GHz fundamentally mode-locked femtosecond fiber laser is developed and verifies the soliton formation theory. Techniques in external cavity repetition rate multiplications are also discussed. A theoretical model that relates the repetition rate of the soliton laser and its other physical measurable parameters is developed to guide further high repetition rate laser development.
