Book Papers for the People

Download or read book Papers for the People written by Joan Allen and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Between 1837 and 1859, Chartists published over 120 newspapers and periodicals. Most Chartist newspapers were short-lived, some were more enduring, but all were testimony to the fact that an energetic, propagandist press was of crucial importance to the first great working-class movement in the world." "Papers for the People provides stimulating new perspectives on the Chartist press and offers a rigorous analysis of the role of print and print culture in the Chartist movement from its early beginnings to its more diverse manifestation in the late 1850s. Located within the broader context of developments in nineteenth-century British journalism, the essays afford a comprehensive chronological and geographical appraisal of Chartist press activity. While existing work has concentrated only on England and Scotland this volume also includes studies of the press in Wales, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Some of the chapters are expressly revisionist; others are pioneering and innovative."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Chartism was a Victorian era working class movement for political reform in Britain between 1838 and 1848. It takes its name from the People's Charter of 1838. The term "Chartism" is the umbrella name for numerous loosely coordinated local groups, often named "Working Men's Association," articulating grievances in many cities from 1837. Its peak activity came in 1839, 1842 and 1848. It began among skilled artisans in small shops, such as shoemakers, printers, and tailors. The movement was more aggressive in areas with many distressed handloom workers, such as in Lancashire and the Midlands. It began as a petition movement which tried to mobilize "moral force", but soon attracted men who advocated strikes, General strikes and physical violence, such as Feargus O'Connor and known as "physical force" chartists."--Wikipedia

Book The Literature of Struggle

Download or read book The Literature of Struggle written by Ian Haywood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1995. Chartism inspired a prodigious literary output, based on its own newspapers and journals. However, while some Chartist political writings have been reprinted, the aesthetic texts of the movement have largely been neglected. This selection of short stories and extracts from longer fiction aims to remedy this situation and covers a diversity of authors, genres and themes. Ian Haywood has written a cogent and wide-ranging review of the Chartist movement and its literature as an introduction to this collection of little-known and revealing stories. The diction is divided into the following areas: the condition of England, Ireland, revolution, women and Chartism itself. This title will be of interest to students of history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chartist Movement It remained to prepare the book for the press. As a first step I was advised by Mr. Wallas to submit the manuscript to Mr. Julius West, the author of a recently completed History of Chanism, whose publication is only delayed by war con ditions. Mr. West has been kind enough to go through the whole manuscript and also to read the proofs. His help has been of great service, not only in correcting errors, resolving doubts, and removing occasional repetitions, but also in advising as to the form which the publication was to take. He condemned the democratic institutions of America, and said all he could to excite the prejudices of his hearers against the prisoners, and expressed the deepest regret that the law was not more stringent with regard to offenders of that class. In sentencing some of the prisoners he told them that he entertained for them no other feelings than those of abhorrence and contempt. He also told them that the House of Commons would never allow members to sit in that House without a property qualification. He appeared ignorant of the fact that all the Scotch members were already sitting there without any such qualification. In short, this ferocious political judge threw all the opprobrium he could on the industrial orders, and all who advocated their cause. He set forth that the bulk of society were ever to remain the branded slaves of the few. This charge excited great indignation throughout the country. Even the middle class press denounced it; and it was made the subject of discussion and of a motion by Duncombe in the House of Commons; and although the motion was lost, it had a goodly number of supporters, and a very strong opinion was expressed against the brutal conduct of Lord Abinger, who not long after died, we believe unregretted, except amongst his private friends. Almost immediately after the March assizes Duncombe also brought forward a motion for the appointment of a Select Committee to enquire into certain grievances complained of by White, Harney, Brook, Leach, Morrison, Skevington, and many others, in all about twenty-two persons. The petitions set forth a number of complaints as to a demand for excessive bail, harshness of proceeding when arrested, annoyances while in prison, and other similar...
