Book excerpt: In today's global economy, small businesses are increasingly turning to foreign technology to remain competitive in the world marketplace. However, these same products and services also provide new opportunities for foreign cyber criminals to infiltrate small business information technology systems, allowing them to access sensitive and valuable information. A recent survey found that 81 percent of small businesses are concerned about a cyber attack, but only 63 percent have the most basic cybersecurity measures in place to combat such an attack. Cyber attacks pose a higher risk for small businesses, since most do not have the means to hire specialized employees or pay the average $32,000 in damages should they be hit with a cyber attack. And, cyber threats for small businesses are on the rise. However, small businesses are still hesitant to engage with the federal government. This is often due to uncertainty surrounding legal liabilities, concerns about privacy and data protection, and a number of other factors. Still, federal information sharing is crucial to ensuring that small businesses have every resource possible to combat cyber threats and the confidence they need to engage with the federal agencies tasked with protecting them. Many cyber threats towards small businesses come at the hands of foreign bad actors, sometimes foreign governments, in an attempt to undermine the United States' national security and economy. In fact, the Department of Homeland Security recently published a public notice exposing a vulnerability in a notable security camera company. Hikvision, one of the top five largest manufacturers of security cameras worldwide, is 42 percent owned by the Chinese government, and in 2017, the Department of Homeland Security learned that many of its cameras were able to be hacked and remotely controlled.

Sonnenfeldt—an accomplished entrepreneur—has done here in this ground-breaking book. Drawing on the wisdom, insight and experience of members of TIGER 21 (The Investment Group for Enhanced Results in the 21st Century), and supplementing that with additional research and interviews, Sonnenfeldt offers real-world guidance and often counter-intuitive advice and conclusions. Among the things you'll learn are: Why grit and focus trump intelligence just about every time. Why having—and listening to— a wise mentor will create shortcuts to getting more done. What you need to do to avoid getting in your own way. And why. 'Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations' can be avoided by taking some simple, commonsense steps. Think BIGGER will inspire you, no matter where you are in your business career. It will also show you that the skills you use to grow wealth can be applied to making the world a better place. Book Small Business Management

Book excerpt: This book is a general introduction to managing a small business. The book is meant to be a general, and simplified, introduction to the subject matter. This book treats small business management as a practical human activity rather than as an abstract theoretical concept. The hope is to teach concepts that can be immediately applied to “real world” experiences and case studies. This book incorporates the use of technology and e-business as a way to gain a competitive advantage over larger rivals. Technology is omnipresent in today’s business world and small businesses must use it to their advantage. Practical discussions and examples of how a small business can use these technologies without having extensive expertise or expenditures are found within the readings. Cash flow is extremely important to small businesses. This book explicitly acknowledges the constant need to examine how decisions affect cash flow by incorporating cash flow impact content. As the lifeblood of all organizations, cash flow implications must be a factor in all business decision-making. Finally, this book recognizes the need to clearly identify sources of customer value and bring that understanding to every decision. Decisions that do not add to customer value should be seriously reconsidered.
