Approval for use requires verification of structural stability under neutron irradiation in relation to the evolution of mechanical properties. In this context, several conventional and Reduced Activation (RA) martensitic materials were neutron irradiated at 325°C up to 6 dpa. They were investigated by Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) under a magnetic field after various doses.

Book excerpt: Reactor pressure vessel steels of the Soviet-type 15Kh2MFA (Cr-Mo-V steels) are used in the VVER-440 type reactors, whereas steels of the Soviet type 15Kh2NMFA (Ni-Cr-Mo-V steels) are used in the WER-1000 type reactors. Eleven different materials, i.e. seven base metals and two weld metals of the type 15Kh2MFA, as well as one base metal and one weld metal of the type 15Kh2NMFA were available for the investigations. The small angle neutron scattering technique using the SANS-2 facility at the FRG-1 reactor in Geesthacht was employed to study the radiation-induced defect microstructure in the as-irradiated materials. The results are discussed in terms of the influence of different impurity contents and irradiation conditions on the defect microstructure.

The theoretical background required to compute magnetic SANS cross sections and correlation functions related to long-wavelength magnetization structures is laid out. The concepts are scrutinized based on the discussion of experimental neutron data. Regarding prior background knowledge, some familiarity with the basic magnetic interactions and phenomena as well as scattering theory is desired. Besides exposing the different origins of magnetic SANS, and furnishing the basics of the magnetic SANS technique in early chapters, a large part of the book is devoted to a comprehensive treatment of the continuum theory of micromagnetics, as it is relevant for the study of the elastic magnetic SANS cross section. Analytical expressions for the magnetization Fourier components allow to highlight the essential features of magnetic SANS and to analyze experimental data both in reciprocal, as well as in real space. Later chapters provide an overview on the magnetic SANS of nanoparticles and so-called complex systems (e.g., ferrofluids, magnetic steels, spin glasses and amorphous magnets). It is this subfield where major progress is expected to be made in the coming years, mainly via the increased usage of numerical micromagnetic simulations (Chapter 7), which is a very promising approach for the understanding of the magnetic SANS from systems exhibiting nanoscale spin inhomogeneity.

Book excerpt: Preliminary small-angle neutron scattering results designed to investigate the structure of voids in neutron-irradiated polycrystalline annealed type 304 stainless steel were obtained. Specimens were subjected to irradiation at 400°C to a fluence of 1.6 x 1023 n/cm2 (E> 0.1 MeV). Void interference effects were seen for voids having an average diameter of about 290 A. The distribution was ''gas-like''with an exclusion distance of 307 A. 1 figure, 1 table. (RWR).

Book excerpt: In previous studies, submerged-arc welds with a range of compositions were irradiated in test reactors over a range of dose and dose-rates. The effect of irradiation was measured by Charpy V-notch and hardness tests, and an irradiation response model was developed. In this paper we report the results of a combined electron m icroscopy and small angle neutron scattering (SANS) study on material from some of the Charpy specimens. The results have been interpreted in terms of the Russell and Brown modulus hardening model. In general they have confirmed the predictions of the irradiation response model, and shown that the copper precipitation contribution to the observed macroscopic hardening is strongly dependent on nickel, dose and dose-rate.

Book excerpt: We have studied the annealing response of an irradiated pressure vessel steel, ASTM A302B, using small-angle neutron scattering. We have used two sets of specimens in this study, one irradiated to a fluence of 3 to 4 x 1019 n/cm2 at 288°C, and the other a parallel set of the same steel in the unirradiated condition. We have annealed specimens from each set isothermally at 300, 350, 400, and 450°C for increasing periods of time up to five h, and have observed the variations in the SANS spectra in both irradiated and unirradiated specimens. Changes in the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) spectra commence at 300°C for the unirradiated material and at 400°C in the irradiated material. The observed response suggests that the changes are caused basically by the precipitation of copper out of solid solution in ?-iron during the annealing of unirradiated and irradiated specimens; in the case of the irradiated specimens, the release of damage-induced defects enhances the precipitation of the copper.
