Book excerpt: Preliminary small-angle neutron scattering results designed to investigate the structure of voids in neutron-irradiated polycrystalline annealed type 304 stainless steel were obtained. Specimens were subjected to irradiation at 400°C to a fluence of 1.6 x 1023 n/cm2 (E> 0.1 MeV). Void interference effects were seen for voids having an average diameter of about 290 A. The distribution was ''gas-like''with an exclusion distance of 307 A. 1 figure, 1 table. (RWR).

Book excerpt: Small-angle x-ray and neutron scattering are powerful analytical tools for investigating long-range fluctuations in electron (x-rays) or magnetic moment (neutrons) densities in materials. In recent years they have yielded valuable information about voids, void size distributions, and swelling in aluminum, aluminum alloys, copper, molybdenum, nickel, nickel-aluminum, niobium and niobium alloys, stainless steels, graphite and silicon carbide. In the case of aluminum, information concerning the shape of the voids and the ratio of specific surface energies was obtained. The technique of small-angle scattering and its application to the study of voids is reviewed in the paper. Emphasis is placed on the conditions which limit the applicability of the technique, on the interpretation of the data, and on a comparison of the results obtained with companion techniques such as transmission electron microscopy and bulk density. 8 figures, 41 references.

Book excerpt: A small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) study has been performed to determine the size distribution of carbide precipitates that were formed during creep deformation in Type 304 stainless steel. The hardening mechanism during primary creep by a fine dispersion of carbide particles in the matrix was confirmed by the SANS measurement and also by direct TEM observations. The size distribution of creep-induced cavities was also determined by SANS measurements after post-creep solution heat treatment.

Crystallographers were amongst the first to exploit the new technique, but they were soon followed by condensed matter physicists and chemists. Engineers and biologists are the most recent recruits to the club of neutron users. The aim of the book is to provide a broad survey of the experimental activities of all these users. There are many specialist monographs describing particular examples of the application of neutron scattering: fifteen of such monographs have been published already in the Oxford University Press series edited by S. Lovesey and E. Mitchell. However this book will appeal to newcomers to the field of neutron scattering, who may be intimidated by the bewildering array of instruments at central facilities (such as the Institut Laue Langevin in France, the ISIS Laboratory in the UK, or the PSI Laboratory in Switzerland), and who may be uncertain as to which instrument to use.
