Book excerpt: From Slumber to Awakening argues that when investigating the cultural and historical predicament of segments of any society a close examination of the literal expression of the people is necessary to understand their human condition better. To accomplish this, the individual psyches of authors and poets must be delved into, and in this case was accessed through personal interviews. This study approaches the unique social position of the Arab Israelis through an exploration of culture and history. The examination of the literature itself begins with Israeli literature from the broad perspectives of both the prose and poetry forms and then moving into the literature and literati themselves one by one exploring the lives of the writers while superimposing their human experiences with the expressions and stories of their creative works. This examination, along with the interviews, defines the Arab Israeli minority as a group while also comparing them to Jewish Israeli writers who are close to the Arab Israeli situation.uation.uation.uation.

Book Kant Hume and the Interruption of Dogmatic Slumber

Download or read book Kant Hume and the Interruption of Dogmatic Slumber written by Abraham Anderson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kant once famously declared in the Prolegomena that "it was the objection of David Hume that first, many years ago, interrupted my dogmatic slumber." Abraham Anderson here offers an interpretation of this utterance, arguing that Hume roused Kant not (as has often been thought) by challenging the principle that "every event has a cause" which governs experience, but rather by attacking the principle of sufficient reason, the basis of both rationalist metaphysics and the cosmological proof of the existence of God. This suggestion, Anderson proposes, allows us to reconcile Kant's declaration with his later assertion that it was the Antinomy of pure reason - the clash of opposing theses - that first woke him from dogmatic slumber. For the Antinomy suspends the dogmatic principle of sufficient reason; in doing so, Anderson proposes, it is extending Hume's attack on that principle. This reading of Kant also explains why Kant speaks of "the objection of David Hume" after mentioning Hume's attack on metaphysics. The "objection" that Kant has in mind, Anderson argues, is a challenge to metaphysics, rather than to the foundations of empirical knowledge. Consequently, Anderson's analysis issues a new view of Hume himself-as primarily interested, not in the foundations of experience, but in the problem of metaphysics and theology. It thereby positions Kant and Hume as champions of the Enlightenment in its struggle with superstition. Shedding new light on the connection between two of the most influential figures in the history of philosophy, this volume will appeal not only to scholars of Kant, Hume, and early modern philosophy, but to philosophers and students interested in the history of philosophy and metaphysics generally.

Book excerpt: About the Book: In the ancient land of Bharata, long before disastrous wars and civilization-shattering calamities, there existed a tribe known as the Vasus. These fearless warriors face an unforeseen menace that threatens their very existence: the relentless grip of Drought and Famine. Determined to secure a future for their people, their valiant king, Dyaus, calls upon his sons to embark on a perilous quest in search of salvation. Thus, Vaayu, Sakra, and Narain, accompanied by their sagacious tutor Brihaspati, set forth to seek refuge in the fertile lands of Sapta Sindhu. Their collective hope rests upon the benevolence of their maternal grandfather, Daksha, the respected governor of Kalibangan. However, little do they know that Daksha is burdened by his own predicaments, his realm threatened from within. The malevolent rebel Vritra, positioned within the impregnable fortress of the twin cities, Dholavira and Lauthal, seeks to wield his power over this sacred land. With sinister intentions, he has obstructed the Mighty Sarasvati, the very lifeblood that sustains Kalibangan and the surrounding regions. As the Vasu princes face the daunting challenge of overcoming Vritra's seemingly insurmountable fortress, their ancestral homeland dangle on the cliff of destruction. Will the Vasus triumph over their formidable foe and secure a prosperous future for their clan? Or will Vritra's indomitable strength and cunning prevail, plunging their people into everlasting darkness? The destiny of the Vasu tribe hangs in a delicate balance, as they navigate treacherous landscapes and engage in epic battles that will shape the course of their history. In this enthralling tale of courage, loyalty, and redemption, the ancient gods watch as mortal heroes strive to determine the fate of a world dangling on the edge of oblivion.
