Non-bifurcation and stability criteria are introduced and post-bifurcation analysis performed by asymptotic development method in relation with Hutchinson’s work. Some recent results on the generalized standard model are given and their connection to Hill’s general formulation is presented. Instability phenomena of inelastic flow processes such as strain localization and necking are discussed. The second theme concerns stability and bifurcation problems in internally damaged or cracked colids. In brittle fracture or brittle damage, the evolution law of crack lengths or damage parameters is time-independent like in plasticity and leads to a similar mathematical description of the quasi-static evolution. Stability and non-bifurcation criteria in the sense of Hill can be again obtained from the discussion of the rate response.

Both are studies of smooth systems, focusing on properties that seem to be manifestly non-smooth. Bifurcation theory is concerned with the sudden changes that occur in a system when one or more parameters are varied. Examples of such are familiar to students of differential equations, from phase portraits. Understanding the bifurcations of the differential equations that describe real physical systems provides important information about the behavior of the systems. Catastrophe theory became quite famous during the 1970's, mostly because of the sensation caused by the usually less than rigorous applications of its principal ideas to "hot topics", such as the characterization of personalities and the difference between a "genius" and a "maniac". Catastrophe theory is accurately described as singularity theory and its (genuine) applications. The authors of this book, previously published as Volume 5 of the Encyclopaedia, have given a masterly exposition of these two theories, with penetrating insight.

Book excerpt: "Dissipative structures" is a concept which has recently been used in physics to discuss the formation of structures organized in space and/or time at the expense of the energy flowing into the system from the outside. The space-time structural organization of biological systems starting from the subcellular level up to the level of ecological systems, coherent structures in laser and of elastic stability in mechanics, instability in hydro plasma physics, problems dynamics leading to the development of turbulence, behavior of electrical networks and chemical reactors form just a short list of problems treated in this framework. Mathematical models constructed to describe these systems are usually nonlinear, often formed by complicated systems of algebraic, ordinary differ ential, or partial differential equations and include a number of character istic parameters. In problems of theoretical interest as well as engineering practice, we are concerned with the dependence of solutions on parameters and particularly with the values of parameters where qualitatively new types of solutions, e.g., oscillatory solutions, new stationary states, and chaotic attractors, appear (bifurcate). Numerical techniques to determine both bifurcation points and the depen dence of steady-state and oscillatory solutions on parameters are developed and discussed in detail in this text. The text is intended to serve as a working manual not only for students and research workers who are interested in dissipative structures, but also for practicing engineers who deal with the problems of constructing models and solving complicated nonlinear systems.

The monograph is split into four distinct parts, independently addressing both finite and infinite-dimensional dynamical systems before discussing their applications. The primary contributions are a rigorous nonautonomous dynamical systems framework and analysis of nonlinear systems, stability, and invariant manifold theory. Special attention is paid to the centre manifold and associated reduction principle, as these are essential to the local bifurcation theory. Specifying to periodic systems, the Floquet theory is extended to impulsive functional differential equations, and this permits an exploration of the impulsive analogues of saddle-node, transcritical, pitchfork and Hopf bifurcations. Readers will learn how techniques of classical bifurcation theory extend to impulsive functional differential equations and, as a special case, impulsive differential equations without delays. They will learn about stability for fixed points, periodic orbits and complete bounded trajectories, and how the linearization of the dynamical system allows for a suitable definition of hyperbolicity. The first aim of this conference was to gather and summarize the work of the European Bifurcation Theory Group after two years of existence (the EBTG links european laboratories in five countries via an EC grant). Thanks to a NATO ARW grant, the conference developed into an international meeting on bifurcation theory and dynamical systems, with the partic ipation of leading specialists not only from Europe but also from overseas countries (Canada, USA, South America). It was a great satisfaction to notice the active, and quite enthusiastic participation of many young scientists. This is reflected in the present book for which many contributors are PhD students or post-doc researchers. Although several "big" themes (bifurcation with symmetry, low dimensional dynam ics, dynamics in EDP's, applications, . . . ) are present in these proceedings, we have divided the book into corresponding parts. In fact these themes overlap in most contributions, which seems to reflect a general tendancy in nonlinear science. I am very pleased to thank for their support the NATO International Exchange Scientific Program as well as the EEC Science Program, which made possible the suc cess of this conference.

However there still remain many gaps in the mathematical theory of such systems. This doctoral thesis presents new results regarding bifurcations of piecewise-smooth, continuous, autonomous systems of ordinary differential equations and maps. Various codimension-two, discontinuity induced bifurcations are unfolded in a rigorous manner. Several of these unfoldings are applied to a mathematical model of the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (a common yeast). The nature of resonance near border-collision bifurcations is described; in particular, the curious geometry of resonance tongues in piecewise-smooth continuous maps is explained in detail. NeimarkSacker-like border-collision bifurcations are both numerically and theoretically investigated. A comprehensive background section is conveniently provided for those with little or no experience in piecewise-smooth systems.
