Book excerpt: The haunting, gripping story of Lapland's buried history of Nazi crimes during World War II, perfect for fans of Stolen by Ann-Helén Laestadius “A beautifully written novel and a thriller that will keep readers turning the page to find out the truth about this disgraceful chapter of Finnish history” – Harvard Review Finnish Lapland, 1944: a young soldier is called to work as an interpreter at a Nazi prison camp. Surrounded by cruelty and death, he struggles to hold onto his humanity. When peace comes, the crimes are buried beneath the snow and ice. A few years later, journalist Inkeri is assigned to investigate the rapid development of remote Western Lapland. Her real motivation is more personal: she is following a lead on her husband, who disappeared during the war. Finding a small community riven with tension and suspicious of outsiders, Inkeri slowly begins to uncover traces of disturbing facts that were never supposed to come to light. From this starkly beautiful polar landscape emerges a story of silenced histories and ongoing oppression, of human brutality and survival.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An exciting and dramatic episode.”—Library Journal “Cliff-hanging suspense.”—Christian Science Monitor Assault in Norway is the classic account of a legendary raid on the Nazi war program. By 1942 Germany had a seemingly insurmountable lead over the Allies in developing an atomic bomb. Contributing to this situation was its access to a crucial ingredient: “heavy water,” found in great abundance at a fortresslike factory in occupied Norway. Allied hopes of stalling the Nazi nuclear program soon focused on sabotaging the cliffside plant—a suicidal mission. But a team of brave Norwegian exiles, trained in Britain, infiltrated their homeland and, hiding in the wilds, awaited the opportunity to launch one of the war’s most daring commando raids. Basing his gripping narrative in large part on interviews with the commandos themselves, Thomas Gallagher recounts in vivid detail the planning and execution of Operation Gunnerside. Assault in Norway recalls the intrigue found in such wartime classics as David Howarth’s We Die Alone and The Sledge Patrol, and the mission it recounts inspired the 1965 Hollywood film The Heroes of Telemark.

Book Rhetoric and Guns

Download or read book Rhetoric and Guns written by Lydia Wilkes and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2022-04-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guns hold a complex place in American culture. Over 30,000 Americans die each year from gun violence, and guns are intimately connected to issues of public health, as is evident whenever a mass shooting occurs. But guns also play an important role in many Americans’ lives that is not reducible to violence and death—as tools, sporting equipment, and identity markers. They are also central to debates about constitutional rights, as seen in ongoing discussions about the Second Amendment, and they are a continuous source of legislative concern, as apparent in annual ratings of gun-supporting legislators. Even as guns are wrapped up with other crucial areas of concern, they are also fundamentally a rhetorical concern. Guns and gun violence occupy a unique rhetorical space in the United States, one characterized by silent majorities, like most gun owners; vocal minorities, like the firearm industry and gun lobby; and a stalemate that fails to stem the flood of the dead. How Americans talk, deliberate, and fight about guns is vital to how guns are marketed, used, and regulated. A better understanding of the rhetorics of guns and gun violence can help Americans make better arguments about them in the world. However, where guns are concerned, rhetorical studies is not terribly different from American culture more generally. Guns are ever-present and exercise powerful effects, but they are commonly talked about in oblique, unsystematic ways. Rhetoric and Guns advances more direct, systematic engagement in the field and beyond by analyzing rhetoric about guns, guns in rhetoric, and guns as rhetoric, particularly as they relate to specific instances of guns in culture. The authors attempt to understand rhetoric’s relationship to guns by analyzing rhetoric about guns and how they function in and as rhetoric related to specific instances—in media coverage, political speech, marketing, and advertising. Original chapters from scholars in rhetorical studies, communication, education, and related fields elucidate how rhetoric is used to maintain and challenge the deadly status quo of gun violence in the United States and extend rhetoricians’ sustained interest in the fields’ relationships to violence, brutality, and atrocity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relying on a hidden camera, a bluff and a little bit of luck, award-winning investigative journalist Rich Hardy finds imaginative ways to meet the people and industries responsible for the lives and deaths of the billions of animals used to feed, clothe and entertain us. What he discovers will shock, but it may just inspire you to re-evaluate your relationship with all animals and what role you let them play in your life. Sometimes dangerous, often emotional and occasionally surreal, this one-of-a-kind perspective examines what it’s like to live and work amongst your adversaries and what you can achieve if you feel strongly enough about something. ‘Cruelty to animals goes on daily behind the closed doors of factory farms or deep in the forests where wild animals are trapped for their fur. Rich’s book exposes us to the raw truth behind these animal trades. Whilst it’s a deeply personal story, it has the potential to change, not just your own life, but the lives of millions of animals. I urge you to read it!’ Joanna Lumley, Actress, author and activist 'An incredible and moving exposé of the horror that animals go through to create a product that destroys the environment & keeps people sick and miserable.’ Moby, Musician and activist ‘It is beautifully and lucidly written...it avoids gratuitous expression but delivers the truth in a compelling and penetrating narrative. Not As Nature Intended is a must read.’ Peter Egan, Actor and animal advocate 'A 007 of the animal world.’ Rhian Lubin, The Daily Mirror ‘As you read this book, if you have a heart and a soul, you too won't fail to be bowled over by Rich's courage.’ Jane Dalton, The Independent ‘All the evidence we need to make our future a plant-based one.’ Christina Rees MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Vegetarianism and Veganism ‘An eye-opening insight into the horrors endured by animals around the world - and into the minds of those who risk everything to help them.’ Maria Chiorando, Plant Based News

Book The Fulfillment of a Dream

Download or read book The Fulfillment of a Dream written by Claude Anthony Gossman and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-12-05 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tom Stone was not only a family man, but a middle-class, professional executive as a Purchasing and Personnel Manager at a local manufacturing company near his home. But Tom Stone was more than this. For deep within him was a burning desire for the wilderness. Much like a wolf or lion that is imprisoned in a steel cage, pacing back and forth impatiently, looking out at the distant hills, as if remembering the freedom the animal once knew. Only Tom Stone did not realize that this burning desire was within himat least not at the present moment. But this desire would surface and haunt him, until he too became like the lion or wolf, inside the cage, pacing, thinking, wondering, until it became an obsession. Tom was a natural outdoorsman, a frontiersman of old that yearned for the freedom of open spaces. The unrestricted freedom to breathe the clean, cool, crisp breeze that blew off the limbs of the forest with its scent of pine. This is the story of that man and his family.
