They include 33 of the 38 invited conference papers, as well as three papers subsequently submitted in writing. Further, there is a report devoted to new and unsolved problems, based on two special sessions of the conference. The present volume is the sixth Oberwolfach Conference in Birkhauser's ISNM series to be edited at Aachen *. It is once again devoted to more significant results obtained in the wide areas of approximation theory, harmonic analysis, functional analysis, and operator theory during the past three years. Many of the papers solicited not only outline fundamental advances in their fields but also focus on interconnections between the various research areas. The papers in the present volume have been grouped into nine chapters. Chapter I, on operator theory, deals with maps on positive semidefinite opera tors, spectral bounds of semigroup operators, evolution equations of diffusion type, the spectral theory of propagators, and generalized inverses. Chapter II, on functional analysis, contains papers on modular approximation, interpolation spaces, and unconditional bases.

Gabor proposed the use of a family of functions obtained from one Gaussian by time-and frequency shifts. Each of these is well concentrated in time and frequency; together they are meant to constitute a complete collection of building blocks into which more complicated time-depending functions can be decomposed. The application to communication proposed by Gabor was to send the coeffi cients of the decomposition into this family of a signal, rather than the signal itself. This remained a proposal-as far as I know there were no seri ous attempts to implement it for communication purposes in practice, and in fact, at the critical time-frequency density proposed originally, there is a mathematical obstruction; as was understood later, the family of shifted and modulated Gaussians spans the space of square integrable functions [BBGK71, Per71] (it even has one function to spare [BGZ75] . . . ) but it does not constitute what we now call a frame, leading to numerical insta bilities. The Balian-Low theorem (about which the reader can find more in some of the contributions in this book) and its extensions showed that a similar mishap occurs if the Gaussian is replaced by any other function that is "reasonably" smooth and localized. One is thus led naturally to considering a higher time-frequency density.

The operators studied are of the following types: Bernstein, Bernstein–Faber, Bernstein–Butzer, q-Bernstein, Bernstein–Stancu, Bernstein–Kantorovich, Favard–SzÁsz–Mirakjan, Baskakov and BalÁzs–Szabados. The second main objective is to provide a study of the approximation and geometric properties of several types of complex convolutions: The de la VallÉe Poussin, FejÉr, Riesz-Zygmund, Jackson, Rogosinski, Picard, Poisson–Cauchy, Gauss–Weierstrass, q-Picard, q-Gauss–Weierstrass, Post–Widder, rotation-invariant, Sikkema and nonlinear. Several applications to partial differential equations (PDEs) are also presented. Many of the open problems encountered in the studies are proposed at the end of each chapter. For further research, The monograph suggests and advocates similar studies for other complex Bernstein-type operators, and for other linear and nonlinear convolutions.
