The series is planned to cover 27 European legal systems, distributed over six volumes, as a product of the research activities of the working group "Transfer of Movables" within the "Study Group on a European Civil Code". Starting with general property law issues like the concepts of ownership and possession employed in the respective legal systems, and the related means of protection, the reports primarily deal with the "derivative" transfer of ownership, but extend to good faith acquisition from a non-owner, acquisitive prescription, processing and commingling, and further related issues. The reports provide the reader with detailed information about the respective rules, case law and legal literature, prepared by national property law experts. These reports are a starting point for further comparative research in property law and also a tool for practitioners searching for information on foreign legal systems. Where available and as far as reasonable, the reports include translations of the most important statutory provisions either in the text or in an annex. All reports include a table of literature and a table of abbreviations, which shall facilitate carrying out further research.

This is in a time when social cohesion and national identity is being challenged. It will explore the impact these laws have had on Australia, European Union (EU) and Slovenia. Identity and social cohesion are contested concepts and can invoke different responses. The challenges states and the EU are likely to face in retaining and even strengthening their respective identities and social cohesion from continued geopolitical shocks, security, economic volatility and environmental degradation is likely to be formidable. These alone pose some of the most complex political and policy issues facing the world. The EU can be held up as a polity that, has developed an identity and level of cohesion, while allowing member states to retain their national identities. It has, to date, also been successful in managing the rise of nationalism. However, that has come under threat in recent times. Thus, the very foundations of liberal democracy could be diluted from the impact of these challenges. Moreover, the basic foundations of rights have, in part, already been diluted from the rise of terrorism (which is acceptable), however, the geopolitical differences pose a significant challenge, in, and of themselves.

Book excerpt: The renewed interest in matters of state succession which accompanied the dissolution of three multinational, socialist states in post-communist Europe inspired the preparation of this book. The book aims to provide both practical lessons of individual countries being directly involved in matters of state succession, and more theoretical contributions to expand the body of conceptual literature in this area. Its contributions address a wide variety of matters, ranging from problems associated with the recognition of states, issues of state succession with respect to international treaties and membership in international organizations, through specific issues such as citizenship, external debts and archives. The diversity of contributions therefore provides a relatively complete survey of matters pertaining to succession of states, especially those relating to the legal, economic and financial aspects. While some authors address universal questions of state succession or the issue of membership in international organizations, most contributions focus on issue-specific problems involving state succession to three Central and Eastern European states and, in particular, the break-up of the SFRY. Slavs in Post-Nazi Austria uses this vital case study to discuss wider issues relating to the stubborn legacy of Nazism in postwar Europe and to instill a deeper understanding of the interplay between collective and individual (liberal) rights in Central Europe.
