Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During 1996–98, the measured fiscal deficits have substantially underestimated the extent of the fiscal problem in Slovakia. Amid these signs of vulnerability, the present government has assumed office in October 1998, and embarked on policies to restore macroeconomic balances and lay the basis for sustainable economic growth. The fiscal tightening and developments in the nongovernment sector has led to a sharp fall in domestic demand in 1999, but a strong improvement in net trade performance partly offset their impact on aggregate demand.

The shock occurs against the backdrop of an incomplete recovery from the pandemic, with activity hampered by breakdowns in global supply chains and resurgent infection waves. Growth is projected to slow to 2.2 percent and inflation to surge to over 10 percent in 2022, with sizable downside risks amidst exceptionally large uncertainty.

Book excerpt: Growth is gaining momentum, led by strong external demand while domestic demand is also picking up. The central bank’s foreign exchange intervention policy has helped stem deflationary pressures but inflation is still well below target. Following substantial fiscal adjustment over the past three years, an easing of the fiscal stance is underway and the new government’s medium-term fiscal plans have not yet been fully elaborated. The financial system is sound and resilient to shocks, and improvements in the regulatory and supervisory architecture are ongoing. The challenge for the authorities is to create the conditions for strong and sustainable growth while maintaining macroeconomic stability.

Book excerpt: This 2015 Article IV Consultation highlights that Slovakia remains among Europe’s stronger economies, with growth continuing to pick up in 2015, driven by strong domestic demand. A push to spend expiring European Union funds has underpinned rising investment while job creation and real wage growth have supported private consumption. Unemployment has fallen significantly since 2013, but is still about 11 percent overall, and is much higher for the long-term unemployed, youth, and women. The outlook is favorable with growth of 3–3.5 percent expected through the medium-term, reflecting sustained domestic demand as well as further contributions from the important export sector as substantial additional foreign auto sector investment is planned.

Real per capita GDP now stands some 50 percent above its 1995 level. Inflation remains low and was under 11⁄2 percent in 2002. The current account deficit rose to nearly 10 percent of GDP in 2001, partly reflecting stagnant external demand and one-time factors.

Book Considering the IMF s Perspective on a Sound Fiscal Policy

Download or read book Considering the IMF s Perspective on a Sound Fiscal Policy written by Mr.Peter S. Heller and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2002-07-01 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a perspective on how the IMF assesses a “sound fiscal policy,” focusing principally on industrial and emerging market economies. It observes six central criteria: the short-term fiscal policy stance, with greater emphasis on automatic stabilizers than discretionary fiscal policy; relevance of medium- and sometimes long-term issues; fiscal sustainability; capacity for aggregate fiscal policy implementation (including political economy factors); structural content of fiscal policy (tax efficiency and public expenditure quality); and institutional, governance, and process issues associated with budget implementation and revenue collection. Greater emphasis could be placed on an adequate margin to deal with uncertain long-term challenges.

In 2001, the Estonian economy showed remarkable resilience given the slowdown in economic activity among its main trading partners. Although growth decelerated somewhat compared with the previous year, the economy grew at a healthy 5.4 percent, driven largely by a pickup in investment demand.

Book Institutional trust and economic policy Lessons from the history of the Euro

Download or read book Institutional trust and economic policy Lessons from the history of the Euro written by Dóra Győrffy and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-30 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book seeks to link theoretical debates on the relevance of trust in economic outcomes with the current arguments about the origins and lessons of the subprime crisis. By what mechanisms does trust influence economic outcomes? Under what conditions do these mechanisms prevail? How do debates about trust help our understanding of the subprime crisis in the European Union? By integrating insights from Post-Keynesian, Austrian and new institutional economics, the central proposition of the analysis is that the presence or absence of institutional trust creates virtuous and vicious cycles in law-abiding, which critically influence the possibility for economic agents to have realistic long-term plans.
