They show how, after a thousand years of Magyar-Slovak coexistence, Slovakia became part of the new Czechoslovak state from 1918–39, and shed new light on its role as a Nazi client state as well as on the postwar developments leading up to full statehood in the aftermath of the collapse of communism in 1989. The volume contains a survey introduction to Slovak fiction from the 1950s to the present. This book is the first to assess an area of east central European culture which has been virtually ignored in the West.
