And if you’re a lawyer, winning an acquittal for your client can be fatal if it goes against the powers that be. Despite Slocum’s eyewitness testimony, an innocent Mexican is sentenced and hanged for murder. It’s all part of a scheme to seize a very valuable piece of land. Slocum could—and probably should—ride away from the whole ugly situation. But injustice doesn’t sit well with him—and one attempt has already been made on his own life. Now, Slocum is going to shed the blood of the guilty—to avenge an innocent man who couldn’t fight back.

Book excerpt: “Inspired by the salty tales of seasoned maritime novelists C. S. Forester and Patrick O’Brian, [Worrall] delicately balances action and adventure with introspection. . . . Fans of seafaring military sagas will welcome [Sails on the Horizon].”—Booklist The year is 1797. Napoleon Buonaparte is racking up impressive wins in the field against the enemies of revolutionary France, while on the seas England is putting up a staunch resistance. Twenty-five-year-old Charles Edgemont is second lieutenant aboard the British ship Argonaut. When orders come for the Argonaut to engage in an all-but-suicidal maneuver to prevent the escape of Spanish ships off the coast of Portugal, he leads his gun crews bravely—until the deaths of the captain and first lieutenant elevate him to commander. For refusing to yield to enemy fire, Charles is permanently promoted and generously rewarded by the Admiralty, becoming wealthy beyond his wildest dreams. Yet upon his return home, his newfound riches prove no help when it comes to winning the heart of Penelope Brown, who regards war as sinful and soldiers as little better than murderers. Changing Penelope’s mind may just be the hardest battle Charles has ever fought—at least until fresh orders send him back to sea, where he faces a formidable adversary in a series of stirring battles of will and might. “Well executed . . . demonstrating Worrall’s expertise in ship and sea warfare history . . . Readers will root for [Charles Edgemont]. . . . He handily defeats veteran seamen, takes enormous chances and is always rewarded.”—Publishers Weekly

Book The Karla Trilogy Digital Collection Featuring George Smiley

Download or read book The Karla Trilogy Digital Collection Featuring George Smiley written by John le Carré and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2011-12-06 with total page 1371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY The first novel in John le Carré's celebrated and New York Times bestselling Karla trilogy featuring George Smiley, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is a heart-stopping tale of international intrigue. The man he knew as "Control" is dead, and the young Turks who forced him out now run the Circus. But George Smiley isn't quite ready for retirement-especially when a pretty, would-be defector surfaces with a shocking accusation: a Soviet mole has penetrated the highest level of British Intelligence. Relying only on his wits and a small, loyal cadre, Smiley recognizes the hand of Karla—his Moscow Centre nemesis—and sets a trap to catch the traitor. THE HONOURABLE SCHOOLBOY As the fall of Saigon looms, master spy George Smiley must outmaneuver his Soviet counterpart on a battlefield that neither can afford to lose. The mole has been eliminated, but the damage wrought has brought the British Secret Service to its knees. Given the charge of the gravely compromised Circus, George Smiley embarks on a campaign to uncover what Moscow Centre most wants to hide. When the trail goes cold at a Hong Kong gold seam, Smiley dispatches Gerald Westerby to shake the money tree. A part-time operative with cover as a philandering journalist, Westerby insinuates himself into a war-torn world where allegiances—and lives—are bought and sold. Brilliantly plotted and morally complex, The Honourable Schoolboy is the second installment of John le Carré’s renowned and New York Times bestselling Karla Trilogy, the follow-up to Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. SMILEY'S PEOPLE Tell Max that it concerns the Sandman… A very junior agent answers Vladimir’s call, but it could have been the Chief of the Circus himself. No one at the British Secret Service considers the old spy to be anything except a senile has-been who can’t give up the game—until he’s shot in the face at point-blank range. Although George Smiley (code name: Max) is officially retired, he’s summoned to identify the body now bearing Moscow Centre’s bloody imprimatur. As he works to unearth his friend’s fatal secrets, Smiley heads inexorably toward one final reckoning with Karla—his dark “grail.” In Smiley’s People, master storyteller and New York Times bestselling author of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and Our Kind of Traitor John le Carré brings his acclaimed Karla Trilogy, to its unforgettable, spellbinding conclusion. John le Carré’s memoir, The Pigeon Tunnel: Stories from My Life, will be available from Viking in September 2016

Book Catfish and Mandala

Download or read book Catfish and Mandala written by Andrew X. Pham and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2000-09-02 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize A New York Times Notable Book of the Year Winner of the Whiting Writers' Award A Seattle Post-Intelligencer Best Book of the Year Catfish and Mandala is the story of an American odyssey--a solo bicycle voyage around the Pacific Rim to Vietnam--made by a young Vietnamese-American man in pursuit of both his adopted homeland and his forsaken fatherland. Andrew X. Pham was born in Vietnam and raised in California. His father had been a POW of the Vietcong; his family came to America as "boat people." Following the suicide of his sister, Pham quit his job, sold all of his possessions, and embarked on a year-long bicycle journey that took him through the Mexican desert, around a thousand-mile loop from Narita to Kyoto in Japan; and, after five months and 2,357 miles, to Saigon, where he finds "nothing familiar in the bombed-out darkness." In Vietnam, he's taken for Japanese or Korean by his countrymen, except, of course, by his relatives, who doubt that as a Vietnamese he has the stamina to complete his journey ("Only Westerners can do it"); and in the United States he's considered anything but American. A vibrant, picaresque memoir written with narrative flair and an eye-opening sense of adventure, Catfish and Mandala is an unforgettable search for cultural identity.

Book Perioperative Considerations and Positioning for Neurosurgical Procedures

Download or read book Perioperative Considerations and Positioning for Neurosurgical Procedures written by Adam Arthur and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are relationships that exist between neuroanesthesia, neurosurgical procedures, individual patient pathology and the positioning of a patient for said procedure. A comprehensive examination of these relationships, their association with patient morbidity/mortality and how to approach these issues in an evidence-based manner has yet to become available. Positioning related injuries have been documented as major contributors to neurosurgical/neuroanesthesiology liability. This text examines these relationships. It provides considerations necessary to the correct positioning of a patient for a neurosurgical procedure for each individual patient and their individual pathology. In other words, this text will demonstrate how to construct the necessary surgical posture for the indicated neurosurgical procedure given the individual constraints of the patient within the environment of anesthesia and conforming to existing evidence-based practice guidelines. Sections will address physiological changes inherent in positioning in relation to anesthesia for neurosurgical procedures, assessment of patient for planned procedure, as well as considerations for managing problems associated with these relationships. Additional sections will examine the relationship between neurosurgical positioning and medical malpractice and the biomechanical science between positioning devices and neurosurgical procedures. Neurosurgery and its patient population are in a constant state of change. Providing the necessary considerations for the neurosurgical procedure planned under the anesthesia conditions planned in the position planned, often in the absence of multicase study literary support, without incurring additional morbidity is the goal of this text.
