Book excerpt: FROM USA TODAY BESTSELLER ELLA JAMES, A STORY OF PAIN AND REDEMPTION... Gwenna White's new neighbor is...distracting. He's a beautiful, tattooed, motorcycle-driving enigma. One she can't allow herself to think about. Since the accident that ruined her face and stole her career, Gwen, a former model, lives under the radar, seldom leaving the bear sanctuary she runs in the Tennessee mountains. She's not reclusive, but that doesn't mean she's looking for a lover. Definitely not someone who looks like that. * Barrett Drake could use a friend: a tall order, since most of his are dead. His damaged hand may be the reason he's out of special ops, but it's not his only wound. Not by a long shot. All that's left between Bear and a new life is one last job. If he can hold on, get it done... He won't be here that long. Just long enough to ruin Gwen's life and make a speedy exit. That's the plan. But things don't always go as planned. You can't choose who you love. You can't fix fate. And that's the problem... *Murder is a standalone romance with a hint of mystery. It's the second in the Sinful Secrets Series, in which each book is inspired by a sin and centered on a huge secret. *The first Sinful Secrets novel, Sloth, is a USA Today bestseller and can be read free via Kindle Unlimited.

He is a teenage African boy who loses his family in a gruesome genocide. He finds himself in New York City as a political refugee; disillusioned with the adult world and its phoniness; where his world takes another tumble as he meets all kinds of people that further shatter his understanding of life; an envious lawyer, an angry artist, an egocentric heiress, a greedy businessman and a slothful dreamer. After a decade has passed, he returns to his native country to meet his only remaining relative, and childhood best friend maybe to find some closure, but to his surprise, he discovers that she is a gluttonous alcoholic and the best friend, an opportunistic pervert. All these encounters, events and relationships, shape his views and beliefs that ultimately induce him to become a priest. Download or read book Giant Ground Sloth written by Marc Zabludoff and published by Marshall Cavendish. This book was released on 2010 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slow, heavy steps rumble through the woods. The steps grow louder as a single, shockingly large animal lurches into view. Its body is almost bearlike. But it is much, much larger than any bear. With its blunt snout it looks more like a hugely overgrown hamster---a hamster the size of an elephant. The large beast moves slowly and strangely, swaying from side to side. Near a tall, broad-leafed tree it stops to eat. Lions prowl on the edge of the woods searching for food. They catch the scent of the beast, but they show no interest. No one cares to disturb it, not while it's eating---not at any other time, either. This is the Giant Ground Sloth! Book jacket.

Download or read book Menagerie written by Caroline Grigson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-29 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Menagerie is the story of the panoply of exotic animals that were brought into Britain from time immemorial until the foundation of the London Zoo — a tale replete with the extravagant, the eccentric, and — on occasion — the downright bizarre. From Henry III's elephant at the Tower, to George IV's love affair with Britain's first giraffe and Lady Castlereagh's recalcitrant ostriches, Caroline Grigson's tour through the centuries amounts to the first detailed history of exotic animals in Britain. On the way we encounter a host of fascinating and outlandish creatures, including the first peacocks and popinjays, Thomas More's monkey, James I's cassowaries in St James's Park, and Lord Clive's zebra — which refused to mate with a donkey, until the donkey was painted with stripes. But this is not just the story of the animals themselves. It also the story of all those who came into contact with them: the people who owned them, the merchants who bought and sold them, the seamen who carried them to our shores, the naturalists who wrote about them, the artists who painted them, the itinerant showmen who worked with them, the collectors who collected them. And last but not least, it is about all those who simply came to see and wonder at them, from kings, queens, and nobles to ordinary men, women, and children, often impelled by no more than simple curiosity and a craving for novelty.

Download or read book Captivity s Collections written by Kathleen S. Murphy and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cashews from Africa's Gold Coast, butterflies from Sierra Leone, jalap root from Veracruz, shells from Jamaica—in the eighteenth century, these specimens from faraway corners of the Atlantic were tucked away onboard inhumane British slaving vessels. Kathleen S. Murphy argues that the era's explosion of new natural knowledge was deeply connected to the circulation of individuals, objects, and ideas through the networks of the British transatlantic slave trade. Plants, seeds, preserved animals and insects, and other specimens were gathered by British slave ship surgeons, mariners, and traders at slaving factories in West Africa, in ports where captive Africans disembarked, and near the British South Sea Company's trading factories in Spanish America. The specimens were displayed in British museums and herbaria, depicted in published natural histories, and discussed in the halls of scientific societies. Grounded in extensive archival research on both sides of the Atlantic, Captivity's Collections mines scientific treatises, slaving companies' records, naturalists' correspondence, and museum catalogs to recover in rich detail the scope of the slave trade's collecting operations. The book reveals the scientific and natural historical profit derived from these activities and the crucial role of specimens gathered along the routes of the slave trade on emerging ideas in natural history.
