As a child, he witnessed his father’s suicide, and today Don-Don’s relationship with his mother, a worn-down cop trying to keep the family together is tenuous at best. Then Don-Don meets a girl with a taste for crack–and his delinquent life turns violently criminal. "Slippin' into Darkness," "The Cisco Kid," and - of course - "Low Rider." They combined rock, funk, soul, R&B, jazz, and a strong Latin vibe in their music, they have been awarded two Platinum and eight Gold records in their career. Their album "The World is a Ghetto" was the bestselling release of 1973 and was #444 on the list of "Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums" list. This unauthorized book follows the group from their early incarnations when Harold Brown and Howard Scott met to form the Creators and then the Night Shift, to their partnership with former Animals lead singer Eric Burdon, to a highly successful career on their own with the core original lineup of Brown, Scott, Lee Oskar, Lonnie Jordan, B.B. Dickerson, Papa Dee Allen, and Charles Miller. The story also follows the band through their later, leaner years, the tragic deaths of two members, and the conflicts that led to a fissure and a split of performing entities that continues to this day. Featuring original interviews, archival research, and musical analysis and commentary, "Slippin' Out of Darkness: The Story of WAR" tells the tale of one of the most unique bands in the history of Classic Rock-era music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you get when you mix a haggard old ghost who is severely ill with nostalgia with the end of the world? You get Dreamers and Thieves, by S. R. Schuch. That is I. I am he. Thomas is dead. He is an old, old soul who just cannot bear to take himself to Heaven, even though that is where all the people are. But, they’re not the same there. They are happy and healthy and eternal. Thomas misses Humans as they were on Earth: emotional, struggling, surviving. He misses them being alive. He saw himself through them, seeing as he was once one of them. Now, they are all gone, and dead, and scattered about the scorched Earth like rotten sprinkles on a big, rotting cake that floats through space. Thomas has lost almost all hope in ever finding life again. His hope is fragile and fleeting, as are his ghostly emotions, which go up and down, up and down. He roams and roams the broken Earth in hopes of finding life when he sees something he hasn’t seen in ages. He sees the Sun poking its blazing face through a pinhole in the blackened, neon, toxic pudding clouds. He hasn’t seen the glory of the Sun in years upon years, not since bombs dropped from all corners of the globe. He knows this is something. He hopes and he prays. He hopes and he prays. The sight tickles his dying hope, which is something that he desperately needs to keep roaming, roaming, roaming, and he instantly knows how he is going to spend his day: he is going to wait out the sight of the Sunrise or Sunset, which ever comes first, and as he waits, he is going to tell you a little story about what could have been, what should have been; the story is about his best friend. His best friend was Victor Connelly. He is dead now. Thomas is nostalgic, sick with memories and ghostly emotions. He and I are the same in that sense. We are ill with emotions that go up and down, up and down, and we both had to do something about it. This is that something.

Book excerpt: Gang violence is on the increase in certain neighbourhoods. There is an urgent need for a fresh perspective that offers insight into gang structure, organisation and offending behaviour to explain this increase. Using the findings from an extensive ethnographic study of local residents, professionals and gang members in south London, and drawing on his vast experience and knowledge of the field, Simon Harding proposes a unique theoretical perspective on survival in violent street gangs. He applies Bourdieu’s principles of social field analysis and habitus to gangs, establishing them as a social arena of competition where actors struggle for distinction and survival, striving to become ‘players in the game’ in the ‘casino of life’. Success is determined by accruing and retaining playing chips – street capital. Harding’s dramatic and compelling insights depict gang life as one of constant flux, where players jostle for position, reputation, status and distinction. This perspective offers new evidence to the field that will help academics, students, practitioners and policy makers to understand the dynamics of gang behaviour and the associated risks of violence and offending. Simon Harding is currently a senior lecturer in criminology at Middlesex University, UK. He draws on 25 years of experience in research, public policy and project delivery as a crime reduction and community safety practitioner.

Download or read book Slippin on the Lino written by Jane Grieve and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Grieve was a career woman, having been actively engaged in the establishment of the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame at Longreach, Queensland, Australia, as its executive director up until the birth of her first child Sam when she was 36 years old. Her childhood being a dim memory, it was no small feat to move from suits, travel, a certain amount of glamour and being in charge of things to the shifting sands of motherhood - a world of being housebound, dressed in whatever, and then only if time allowed, and wondering, quite frankly, just who was in charge. Sam was followed in quite quick succession by Lou, then Jock. These then are the stories of Sam, Lou, Jock and the myriad of household pets, welcome and unwelcome, that attend the raising of children, on acreage, as if that made much difference. These stories will ring bells of truth for those in the thick of it, and memory for those who have survived. Jane hopes they will make you laugh and cry as being the mother of Sam, Lou and Jock enriched her life through both laughter and tears.
