Book excerpt: A New, Powerfully Effective Way To Shed Excess Weight Using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. You'll Never Look At Dieting The Same Way Again. You've tried different fad diets that promised you the world if you just implement this new "diet hack." Each time, you feel pumped. This time will be different, you think. Excited at the prospect of looking like a model within "a few weeks," you religiously follow every instruction laid out. A week passes. Two weeks. You hop on the scale. From here on out. One of two things can happen: You'll lose weight, but you'll always be stuck with nagging hunger or you'll won't lose any weight at all. Disillusionment sets in. You go on halfheartedly, then, you give up. If you're reading this, this is probably you. But this is about to change. If you're tired of making the same eating mistakes over and over again, if you'retired of fad diets pushed forward by "gurus" who simply push rehashed advice from the web and declare it to be the holy grail of weight loss that is simply impractical or flat out don't work, then psychological program is for you. In the Slim Mind: A Psychologist's Guide to Permanent Weight Loss, Dr. Catherine Sykes cuts out all the gimmicks that are rife in today's dieting industry and lays down the ultimate guide for losing that extra weight and making you feel better about yourself using psychological research evidence. She completely takes the guesswork out of using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to change your thinking which will ultimately manifest in your physiology and physical appearance. With countless hours of profound research on the intricate interrelationship between dieting and cognitive behavioral therapy condensed in a single book, Slim Mind will get you started on the way to getting your life back. However, there is an important caveat: Slim Mind is not designed to be another "Get Slim Quick" program. There is enough of that already. It takes time to lose weight permanently. With that caveat aside, here's what you'll discover in this life-changing program: * How to change your mindset towards food and eating so that you can enjoy long-term change. * The only two essential tools you need to reliably lose weight. Say goodbye to complicated machines and devices that just makes you feel good and does absolutely nothing to help your weight loss cause! * How to start your own collection of meals that is suitable for you and your lifestyle. * How your "obesogenic" environment is preventing you from losing weight and steps to conquer it. * How to create your own personal motivation companion to help you blast your excess weight. * How to pick your natural positive strengths and use them as a tool to help you lose weight. * Food principles that will fast track effective weight loss. * ...and many more! Deeply intuitive and practical, Slim Mind is a program like no other. It simplifies scientific psychological evidence to help you regain control of your body and take back your life. Book excerpt: 'Elegantly written and beautifully produced' TLS How 'Uncle Bill' won the war in Burma Defeated and demoralised, British units in the Far East had virtually been ejected from Burma when, in 1943, General W. J. Slim organised, trained and then deployed his famous 'forgotten' 14th Army to devastating effect, defeating the Japanese twice and liberating Burma in the process. One of the most innovative soldiers of his generation, Slim's 'smart' style of soldiering was startling in its modernity - and with it he achieved something no one believed possible. An intelligent, compassionate commander, the unconventional Slim was also a heroic figure to the men he commanded - known affectionately to the ranks as 'Uncle Bill'. This biography tells the fascinating story of how he brought victory out of defeat; Lyman now gives him his rightful place, alongside Patton and Guderian, in the pantheon of eminent and unorthodox Second World War commanders.

THE MAN BY THE SEA John "Slim" Hardy, heavy drinker and disgraced soldier turned bumbling private detective, is hired to investigate Ted Douglas, an investment banker who slips out of work every Friday to visit a desolate cove on the Lancashire coast. There, he walks to the shore, opens an old book, and begins to read aloud. His wife thinks he's having an affair. Slim thinks he's insane. The truth is more incredible than either could imagine. The Man by the Sea is the sensational debut novel by Jack Benton, a classic story of love, betrayal, murder, and intrigue. THE CLOCKMAKER'S SECRET A buried clock holds the key to a decades-old mystery. On holiday to escape the nightmares of his last case, disgraced soldier turned private detective John “Slim” Hardy comes upon something buried in the peat on Bodmin Moor. Unfinished and water-damaged but still ticking, the old clock provides a vital clue to an unsolved missing-persons case. As Slim begins to ask questions of the tiny Cornish village of Penleven, he is drawn into a world of lies, rumours, and secrets, some of which the residents would prefer to stay buried. Twenty-three years ago, a reclusive clockmaker left his workshop and walked out onto Bodmin Moor, taking his last, unfinished clock with him. He disappeared. Slim is determined to find out why. The Clockmaker’s Secret is the stunning sequel to Jack Benton’s acclaimed debut, The Man by the Sea. THE GAMES KEEPER Having fallen on hard times, disgraced soldier turned private investigator John “Slim” Hardy is hired by rich and enigmatic land owner Oliver Ozgood to uncover the identity of a mysterious blackmailer. The man is demanding a fortune in exchange for his silence. He claims to be Dennis Sharp, a former employee of Ozgood, and threatens to reveal secrets that will soil Ozgood’s family name and send the patriarch to prison. There’s only one problem. Dennis Sharp is dead, killed by Ozgood himself. In search of answers, Slim moves to the remote rural hamlet of Scuttleworth in the Devonshire countryside, where he will confront demons both from within and without in his most challenging case yet.

Book The Old West Adventures of Ornery and Slim

Download or read book The Old West Adventures of Ornery and Slim written by Montana Kid Hammer and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-02-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historically based fictional novel tells on a pair of working cowmen and their exploits in the American old west. This story chronicles a veteran cowhand, Patrick O’Connor, (Ornery) and his tenderfoot saddle partner, Francis Slimmery, (Slim), and how they made their way west to come into the steady employment of the ranch known as the, “O U T (Oh-Ewe-Tee) Spread”. Further told is how the two main characters come to deal with life, contending; with their critters (cows), the elements of nature, the lay of the land, outlaws, wildlife, their friends, calico-friends, and each other, all the while toiling to tame their corner of the prairie west. Conveyed are the simple, but oft’ humorous and life like escapades of these two laboring cow-saddlers, as they commence to ply their cow craft for the “brand”. The setting for these accounts is far less fictional, and transpires on the very real North American frontier, circa 1880’s. Told about as well is the time-honored cowboy code, one pervasive to the people of this era and played out by the two central figures. These tales dabble in the daily deeds, trials, and tribulations of nearly every aspect of a cowman’s existence during that period. The anecdotal activities are set to expose the full range of endeavors, from the slow and arduous boredom of ranch chores, to the split second moments of hair-raising and life-threatening perils oft’ encountered along the trails. The chapters in this story are intended to rekindle the feeling of an old west evening around the campfire, filled with tales of cowboy adventures, escapades packed with; love and luck, kinship and hardship, calamity and triumph, wisdom and self-exploration, all via the exploits of these two saddleback heroes and their friends. All this, and shared in the old-fashioned American story-telling tradition.

Book A Slim Book about Narrow Content

Download or read book A Slim Book about Narrow Content written by Gabriel M. A. Segal and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2000-06-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A good understanding of the nature of a property requires knowing whether that property is relational or intrinsic. Gabriel Segal's concern is whether certain psychological properties—specifically, those that make up what might be called the "cognitive content" of psychological states—are relational or intrinsic. He claims that content supervenes on microstructure, that is, if two beings are identical with respect to their microstructural properties, then they must be identical with respect to their cognitive contents. Segal's thesis, a version of internalism, is that being in a state with a specific cognitive content does not essentially involve standing in any real relation to anything external. He uses the fact that content locally supervenes on microstructure to argue for the intrinsicness of content. Cognitive content is fully determined by intrinsic, microstructural properties: duplicate a subject in respect to those properties and you duplicate their cognitive contents. The book, written in a clear, engaging style, contains four chapters. The first two argue against the two leading externalist theories. Chapter 3 rejects popular theories that endorse two kinds of content: "narrow" content, which is locally supervenient, and "broad" content, which is not. Chapter 4 defends a radical alternative version of internalism, arguing that narrow content is a variety of ordinary representation, that is, that narrow content is all there is to content. In defending internalism, Segal does not claim to defend a general philosophical theory of content. At this stage, he suggests, it should suffice to cast reasonable doubt on externalism, to motivate internalism, and to provide reasons to believe that good psychology is, or could be, internalist.
