Book County Sligo Ireland genealogy and family history notes

Download or read book County Sligo Ireland genealogy and family history notes written by Michael C. O'Laughlin and published by Irish Roots Cafe. This book was released on 2001 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finding Your Family in County Sligo This illustrated, well indexed book, was created exclusively to help you find your family in County Sligo, Ireland. Focusing specifically on families within the county, it includes an introduction to research and sources in Sligo. The most numerous families from birth records are given, as well as rather rare Sligo families found in heraldic records. Included you will find a full page county map from the Atlas of Ireland, along with a listing of modern parishes and old townlands, along with the address and location of records for more research. Published by the Irish Genealogical Foundation, this book was originally made for members researching in Sligo. What this book does This work includes copies of actual records (some worn, torn and faded), from the IGF Library. It also includes rough sketches of family coats of arms and notes from centuries past - seldom found elsewhere. The resources provided here will help research any family in the county, including old Irish families, and settler families from England, Scotland, Wales and the continent. This book is a hands on guide for finding your family in Sligo- some family history is included - but it is not a gigantic collection of family histories . (For that see 'The Book of Irish Families, great & small', the first book in the Irish Families series by O'Laughlin.) The Irish Families Project for Sligo The Master book to the 29 volume Irish Families series is 'The Book of Irish Families, great & small'. That book gives hundreds of family histories from County Sligo, and the surrounding areas. " County Sligo Genealogy and Family History Notes", volume 24 in the series, expands upon that coverage with added families and new resources just for Sligo. (In this way both books can work together as a set if desired, or they may be used independently for research.) Table of Contents P a r t O n e O'Gara extract from King James Irish Army List Introduction to Sources; Birth Index.. National Resource List . Local Resource List. Book Henry Kelly 1894 1920 Co Sligo s Forgotten Rebel

Download or read book Henry Kelly 1894 1920 Co Sligo s Forgotten Rebel written by C’an Harte and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-08-05 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Henry Kelly (1894-1920): County Sligo's Forgotten Rebel' is a short biographical study of Volunteer Henry Kelly of Ballygawley, an Easter Rebel of 1916, who was executed by an RIC Auxiliary Raid on the Banba Hall, Dublin on the 17th of October, 1920, during the War of Independence. The author hoped to revitalise the life of a forgotten rebel, one of only a handful of Sligo natives to involve themselves in the 1916 Rising. Henry received no adulation, no recognition and no medals due to his early demise. The author wishes to rectify this tragedy with this publication. Proceeds of the book will go towards the resurfacing of Henry's weathered headstone in Kilross Cemetery, Ballygawley and towards an application for posthumous IRA medals due to him and his next of kin.

Book Tales from Sligo and the West

Download or read book Tales from Sligo and the West written by Dennis Sommers and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-07 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales from Sligo and the West encompasses both historic and contemporary views of the magical and mystical nature of this region. The literary tradition in this area is as ancient as any on earth, dating back thousands of years, originating in the oral traditions of the Irish Celts, Druids, Poets, and Bards. These traditions were carried forth by the early Christian monks who incorporated and preserved the Celtic/Gaelic stories and artwork into their outstanding illuminated manuscripts, now realized as the oldest and most beautiful ever produced, many of which are now housed in the great library of Trinity College Dublin. The highly inspirational history of this small island has produced many of the world's greatest authors, including Jonathan Swift, Edmund Burke, Oliver Goldsmith, Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, Bram Stoker, Sean O'Casey, C. S. Lewis, Kate O'Brien, Lady Augusta Gregory, Patrick Kavanagh, Brian Friel, Dermot Healy, Willie Joe Meally; and, includes four Nobel Laureates, William Butler Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett, and Seamus Heaney. Tales from Sligo and the West is the next progression of this extraordinary tradition.

Book excerpt: For the devotee of Irish heritage, mythology or folklore, County Sligo has everything. From the Curlew mountains in the south, where Aodh Ruadh Ó Domhnaill defeated an English army under Sir Conyers Clifford, to Benbulben's slopes in the north, where St Colmcille battled the High King of Ireland, every hill and valley is linked by the gossamer threads of myth, folklore and legend. These stories, some age-old legends and fantastical myths, some amusing anecdotes and cautionary tales, are a heady mix of the bloodthirsty, funny and passionate and a selection of the best are retold here by writer and local historian Joe McGowan. In these pages you will find little-known anecdotes of the traditional ways of Sligo's residents, their customs and superstitions; you will find stories of epic battles and heroic deeds; and you will also hear the fantastical accounts of mythical creatures, faeries, witches and the ghosts of Connacht itself.
