Book Long Road

    Book Details:
  • Author : Steven Hyden
  • Publisher : Hachette Books
  • Release : 2022-09-27
  • ISBN : 0306826445
  • Pages : 250 pages

Download or read book Long Road written by Steven Hyden and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading music journalist’s riveting chronicle of how beloved band Pearl Jam shaped the times, and how their legacy and longevity have transcended generations. Ever since Pearl Jam first blasted onto the Seattle grunge scene three decades ago with their debut album, Ten, they have sold 85M+ albums, performed for hundreds of thousands of fans around the world, and have even been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In Long Road: Pearl Jam and the Soundtrack Of A Generation, music critic and journalist Steven Hyden celebrates the life, career, and music of this legendary group, widely considered to be one of the greatest American rock bands of all time. Long Road is structured like a mix tape, using 18 different Pearl Jam classics as starting points for telling a mix of personal and universal stories. Each chapter tells the tale of this great band — how they got to where they are, what drove them to greatness, and why it matters now. Much like the generation it emerged from, Pearl Jam is a mass of contradictions. They were an enormously successful mainstream rock band who felt deeply uncomfortable with the pursuit of capitalistic spoils. They were progressive activists who spoke in favor of abortion rights and against the Ticketmaster monopoly, and yet they epitomized the sound of traditional, male-dominated rock ‘n’ roll. They were looked at as spokesmen for their generation, even though they ultimately projected profound confusion and alienation. They triumphed, and failed, in equal doses — the quintessential Gen-X tale. Impressive as their stats, accolades, and longevity may be, Hyden also argues that Pearl Jam’s most definitive accomplishment lies in the impact their music had on Generation X as a whole. Pearl Jam’s music helped an entire generation of listeners connect with the glory of bygone rock mythology, and made it relevant during a period in which tremendous American economic prosperity belied a darkness at the heart of American youth. More than just a chronicle of the band’s career, this book is also a story about Gen- X itself, who like Pearl Jam came from angsty, outspoken roots and then evolved into an establishment institution, without ever fully shaking off their uncertain, outsider past. For so many Gen-Xers growing up at the time, Pearl Jam’s music was a beacon that offered both solace and guidance. They taught an entire generation how to grow up without losing the purest and most essential parts of themselves. Written with his celebrated blend of personal memoir, criticism, and journalism, Hyden explores Pearl Jam’s path from Ten to now. It's a chance for new fans and old fans alike to geek out over Pearl Jam minutia—the B-sides, the beloved deep cuts, the concert bootlegs—and explore the multitude of reasons why Pearl Jam’s music resonated with so many people. As Hyden explains, “Most songs pass through our lives and are swiftly forgotten. But Pearl Jam is forever.”

Book Crosby Stills Nash and Young

Download or read book Crosby Stills Nash and Young written by David Browne and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first and most complete narrative biography of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, by acclaimed music journalist and Rolling Stone senior writer David Browne "Riveting." -People Magazine "This is one of the great rock and roll stories." -New York Times Book Review Even in the larger-than-life world of rock and roll, it was hard to imagine four more different men. Yet few groups were as in sync with their times as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Starting with the original trio's landmark 1969 debut album, their group and individual songs-"Wooden Ships," "Ohio," "For What It's Worth" (with Stills and Young's Buffalo Springfield)-became the soundtrack of a generation. But their story would rarely be as harmonious as their legendary vocal blend. Over the decades, these four men would continually break up, reunite, and disband again-all against a backdrop of social and musical change, recurring disagreements, and self-destructive tendencies that threatened to cripple them as a group and as individuals. In Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young: The Wild, Definitive Saga of Rock's Greatest Supergroup, Rolling Stone senior writer David Browne presents the ultimate deep diveinto rock and roll's most musical and turbulent brotherhood. Featuring exclusive interviewswith band members, colleagues, fellow superstars, former managers, employees, and lovers-and with access to unreleased music and documents-this is the sweepingstory of rock's longest-running, most dysfunctional, yet pre-eminent musical family, delivered with the epic feel their story rightly deserves.

Book Do Angels Smooch

  • Author : Professor Edward Kapambwe
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse

  • Pages : 168 pages

Download or read book Do Angels Smooch written by Professor Edward Kapambwe and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do Angels Smooch? Do angels smooch? If not, why so much obsession in lyrics, movies and books about angels and kissing? Are there any more surprises that Edward Kapambwe unveils in his book? Well, there is more. For example, Kapambwe takes us into an in-depth angelic journey in order to understand the extent of angelic involvement in human affairs than ever before. He brings out novel elements that have never been unveiled previously. For example, he recounts how angels visit our stores. They buy the stuff they need before meeting people. Haven’t you noticed that no angel has ever appeared nude or with wings in real life. They come already dressed just like us; and that is why we have been unable to identify them. We are surrounded by angels both good and evil. Evil angels no longer transform themselves into humans. Only good angels still do. Since there are no shops in heaven, where do they get the stuff they wear? Besides that, what happens to these apparels after being used? The author asserts that angels donate them to Thrift Stores such as, Goodwill, the Salvation Army and others. Donating to Thrift Stores is an ingenious way to make them accessible to both the rich and the poor. Have you wondered why they do that? It is a deliberate move they take so that ordinary people could buy things worn by angels. That begs another question, why do they do that? The answer is amazing. They do that on purpose because they know that to wear stuff worn by holy angels comes with tremendous blessings. This book explains that point persuasively. In addition, the author contends that these angels are highly disciplined entities such that they never steal anything from banks, stores or homes of rich people even though they able to do so without being seen. Angels are invisible (spirits) entities. However, they have the ability to transform themselves into regular human beings. The author throws in another insight. He argues and states that helping strangers gives a person the best chance to be visited by an angel. The author then explains to us the probabilities of being smooched by an angel. Do angels smooch? That question points us in the direction of social theology than philosophy. It is not a new question but the framing might be. Many theologians have debated extensively the narrative found in Genesis 6 where angels came on earth and married daughters of men. With his masterful insight and knowledge of theology and philosophy, the author gives a different angle of the workings of angels among us. It’s not a book to miss. If there is one book you need to read in your lifetime, Do Angels Smooch should be on top of your list.

Book Back to the Miracle Factory

Download or read book Back to the Miracle Factory written by Paul Williams and published by Forge Books. This book was released on 2010-06-08 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Williams has been writing about pop music for decades, never flagging in his enthusiasm or his emotional and intellectual openness to the newest music. He has been doing this ever since he founded the rock magazine, Crawdaddy, in 1966. His insight into how it feels when we listen to certain performers or certain performances makes a connection between music and reading that is rare and fascinating. Whether its Bob Dylan or Brian Wilson, Pearl Jam or Nirvana, Paul Williams can reveal something we didn't know we knew when we listened to the music. This is what rock criticism was invented to do, back in the 1960s, and he has been doing ever since. It's as much fun to read, as the music is to listen to. Book excerpt: DIVSince his first recordings with Buffalo Springfield in 1967, Neil Young has been described as brilliant, cantankerous, confounding, ruthless, mercurial, and vexing. Regardless, his profound musical influence and his status as a critical favorite cannot be denied. Now the first illustrated biography to span Young’s 40-plus years as a recording and touring musician (and nearly as many forays into divergent musical genres, some wags might say), is updated through 2012./divFrom Young’s earliest days in the Canadian folk and rock scenes through his tenures with Buffalo Springfield and CSN&Y and on to his varied solo career backed by bands including the Stray Gators, the Ducks, the Bluenotes, Booker T. & the MGs, Pearl Jam, and, of course, Crazy Horse, every aspect of Young’s long and varied career is covered. The book features the work of rock photographers from the 1960s to the present, as well as concert posters and ephemera from around the world, including picture sleeves, LPs, ticket stubs, pins, T-shirts, backstage passes, and more. Notable musicians from around the world chip in with commentary, and the book is further complemented with a discography and sidebars examining topics like Young’s involvement with Lionel toy trains (of which he is a part owner), Farm Aid, and San Francisco’s Bridge School.
