Book excerpt: China, the greatest empire the world had ever known, is weak and divided after a series of humiliating defeats in the Opium Wars, and the divine Empress' court harbours many who deeply resent the westerners who inflicted and now take advantage of these losses. Japan, on the other hand, has embraced the West with open arms. After centuries of isolation the Japanese now march forwards and accept technologies that, a few decades before, would have been regarded as witchcraft. Possessed of the East's most modern army, Japan now looks avariciously towards its neighbours. The next decade will decide whether the ancient empires of the East survive or are washed away, and every one of the Great Powers wants their slice.

Book The Road to Sleeping Dragon

Download or read book The Road to Sleeping Dragon written by Michael Meyer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the highly praised author of The Last Days of Old Beijing, a brilliant portrait of China today and a memoir of coming of age in a country in transition. In 1995, at the age of twenty-three, Michael Meyer joined the Peace Corps and, after rejecting offers to go to seven other countries, was sent to a tiny town in Sichuan. Knowing nothing about China, or even how to use chopsticks, Meyer wrote Chinese words up and down his arms so he could hold conversations, and, per a Communist dean's orders, jumped into teaching his students about the Enlightenment, the stock market, and Beatles lyrics. Soon he realized his Chinese counterparts were just as bewildered by China's changes as he was. Thus began an impassioned immersion into Chinese life. With humor and insight, Meyer puts readers in his novice shoes, winding across the length and breadth of his adopted country --from a terrifying bus attack on arrival, to remote Xinjiang and Tibet, into Beijing's backstreets and his future wife's Manchurian family, and headlong into efforts to protect China's vanishing heritage at places like "Sleeping Dragon," the world's largest panda preserve. In the last book of his China trilogy, Meyer tells a story both deeply personal and universal, as he gains greater – if never complete – assurance, capturing what it feels like to learn a language, culture and history from the ground up. Both funny and relatable, The Road to Sleeping Dragon is essential reading for anyone interested in China's history, and how daily life plays out there today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1895 and the world is in turmoil. The Great Powers compete for resources and the latest technology, and an undeclared and secret war rages between them all. This is battleground of the Adventuring Companies. These clandestine agents of the Great Powers operate in the shadows, matching skills and wits in pursuit of the newest scientific formulae or powerful occult artifacts. In Her Majesty's Name sets these adventuring companies against each other in one-off encounters and in longer narrative campaigns. Companies are usually comprised of just 4–15 figures and two players could easily play three games in an evening, making an on-going campaign a highly viable option. In Her Majesty's Name has been designed to allow maximum versatility for the player – if you can imagine it, the system will help you build it. There is, however, a wealth of material provided in the book, covering weird science, mystical powers, and a range of pre-generated adventuring companies, including the British Explorers' Club, the Prussian Society of Thule, the US Marine Corps, the Légion Étrangère, the revolutionaries of the Brick Lane Commune, ancient Egyptian cults, and the mysterious Black Dragon Tong.

Book The Stirring of Dragons Universe One

Download or read book The Stirring of Dragons Universe One written by Thomas Baskerville and published by Europa Edizioni. This book was released on 2022-04-30 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A world in which only four humans remain, including Tom and Cathie, two young people who, for 19 years, have managed to survive against the injustices of the world using their skills. Four humans, seemingly different, each with their own strengths, who come together over issues of desperation and coexistence, representing the last human civilization. Each of them has a tragic story behind them and new adventures to face in order to survive the Extinction that has been striking humanity for years now. Tom (Thomas Baskerville), was born in Manchester but moved to North Wales only a few years later. It was not long before he was falling behind in class, he was eventually diagnosed as dyslexic. His parents and teachers wanted him to read more to practice, but he found children’s books far too dull for him. Instead, he turned to longer, more difficult books containing far more interesting stories. He enjoyed getting lost in fictional worlds designed by other people, but eventually found it easier to lose himself in worlds of his own imagination. This was especially true during the more challenging periods of his life. His interest in science played an important role in developing believable worlds; an interest which eventually led to studying for a master’s degree in Chemistry, but also opened his eyes to new possibilities for exploration of the stories trapped inside his head. Putting the stories to paper began more as a hobby, a time alone with his thoughts where he could let his imagination run riot. The more he wrote, the more he wanted to write. During his exams in school, he could use an offline computer to type his answers because of terrible handwriting and dyslexia. Spending so much time writing helped enormously with his spelling difficulties through the sheer volume of repetition. Now he is letting loose the stories from his imagination in the hopes others may get lost in his world, as he did with others.

Book Tabletop Wargames A Designers and Writers Handbook

Download or read book Tabletop Wargames A Designers and Writers Handbook written by Rick Priestley and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike chess or backgammon, tabletop wargames have no single, accepted set of rules. Most wargamers at some point have had a go at writing their own rules and virtually all have modified commercially available sets to better suit their idea of the ideal game or to adapt favourite rules to a different historical period or setting. But many who try soon find that writing a coherent set of rules is harder than they thought, while tweaking one part of an existing set can often have unforeseen consequences for the game as a whole. Now, at last, help is at hand. Veteran gamer and rules writer John Lambshead has teamed up with the legendary Rick Priestley, creator of Games Workshop’s phenomenally successful Warhammer system, to create this essential guide for any would-be wargame designer or tinkerer. Rick and John give excellent advice on deciding what you want from a wargame and balancing ‘realism’ (be it in a historical or a fantasy/sci-fi context) with playability. They discuss the relative merits of various mechanisms (cards, dice, tables) then discuss how to select and combine these to handle the various essential game elements of turn sequences, combat resolution, morale etc to create a rewarding and playable game that suits your tastes and requirements

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herman Sinaiko is renowned for his gifts as a guide to exploring and appreciating the humanities. This book brings to general readers Sinaiko’s thoughts on, and invitations to read or reread, a wide selection of major literary and philosophical works—from ancient Greek to Chinese to modern. Taking a conversational approach, he deals with the perennial questions that thinking people have always raised, and investigates how works of great art may provide answers to these questions. Sinaiko reestablishes the notion that there is a canon of great works from the great traditions of the world and argues for the existence of permanent standards of excellence. He rejects most contemporary critical views of classical literature and philosophy, including those of "experts" who seek to monopolize access to great works, academics whose extreme emphasis on historical context disallows any current relevance, and theorists whose lenses distort with personal bias rather than sharpening focus on the works they discuss. Sinaiko reclaims the canon for all of us, opening up discussion on texts ranging from Plato to Tolstoy, Confucius to Mary Shelley, and encouraging each reader to listen and respond to the rich diversity of powerful views on the human condition that such great works offer.
