Book Folktales and Fairy Tales 4 volumes

Download or read book Folktales and Fairy Tales 4 volumes written by Anne E. Duggan Ph.D. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-02-12 with total page 1751 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Encyclopedic in its coverage, this one-of-a-kind reference is ideal for students, scholars, and others who need reliable, up-to-date information on folk and fairy tales, past and present. Folktales and fairy tales have long played an important role in cultures around the world. They pass customs and lore from generation to generation, provide insights into the peoples who created them, and offer inspiration to creative artists working in media that now include television, film, manga, photography, and computer games. This second, expanded edition of an award-winning reference will help students and teachers as well as storytellers, writers, and creative artists delve into this enchanting world and keep pace with its past and its many new facets. Alphabetically organized and global in scope, the work is the only multivolume reference in English to offer encyclopedic coverage of this subject matter. The four-volume collection covers national, cultural, regional, and linguistic traditions from around the world as well as motifs, themes, characters, and tale types. Writers and illustrators are included as are filmmakers and composers—and, of course, the tales themselves. The expert entries within volumes 1 through 3 are based on the latest research and developments while the contents of volume 4 comprises tales and texts. While most books either present readers with tales from certain countries or cultures or with thematic entries, this encyclopedia stands alone in that it does both, making it a truly unique, one-stop resource.

Book The Spiritual Consciousness of Carmen Mart n Gaite

Book excerpt: Spanish writer Carmen Martín Gaite (1925-2000) defined religioso as the reconnection of that which was previously united, namely, the day-to-day and supernatural worlds - here defined as consciousness and the unconscious, bringing awareness and wholeness. In this book, Martín Gaite's religious outlook is explored through the inner journeys of five female characters in El balneario, Lo raro es vivir, Irse de casa and Nubosidad variable. Spanish writer Carmen Martín Gaite (1925-2000) defined religioso as the reconnection of that which was previously united, namely, the day-to-day and supernatural worlds - here defined as consciousness and the unconscious, bringing awareness and wholeness. In this book, Martín Gaite's religious outlook is explored through the inner journeys of five female characters in El balneario, Lo raro es vivir, Irse de casa and Nubosidad variable. For Martín Gaite, a truly religious, or spiritual, perspective requires conscious attention to the products of the unconscious (dreams, images, memories, premonitions), followed by reflection and action, as well as a similar attentiveness and responsiveness to external events both large and small. This reconnection of the supernatural and day-to-day worlds also involves descent to the unconscious - the way to wholeness - as depicted in so many myths and fairy tales, including those which Martín Gaite used to retell or enhance the works analysed in this book: Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Amor and Psyche, Demeter and Persephone, and the Descent of the Goddess Inanna. Looking at the extent to which these female characters attend to, reflect on, and respond to their dreams, images, memories and events, the analysis suggests that Martín Gaite uses her stories to try to communicate both the road to her own enlightenment and warnings about paths that lead away from this.

Book Women and the City in French Literature and Culture

Download or read book Women and the City in French Literature and Culture written by Siobhán McIlvanney and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city has traditionally been configured as a fundamentally masculine space. This collection of essays seeks to question many of the idées reçues surrounding women’s ongoing association with the private, the domestic and the rural. Covering a selection of films, journals and novels from the French medieval period to the Franco-Algerian present, it challenges the traditionally gendered dichotomisation of the masculine public and feminine private upon which so much of French and European literature and culture is predicated. Is the urban flâneur a quintessentially male phenomenon, or can there exist a true flâneuse as active agent, expressing the confidence and pleasure of a woman moving freely in the urban environment? Women and the City in French Literature and Culture seeks to locate exactly where women are heading – both individually and collectively – in their relationships to the urban environment; by so doing, it nuances the conventional binaristic perception of women and the city in an endeavour to redirect future research in women’s studies towards more interesting and representative urban destinations.
