The first three fairy tales are 'The Sleeping Beauty,''Blue Beard,' and 'Cinderella,' all three of which were popularized in France by Charles Perrault in 1697 in his Tales of Mother Goose. The last tale in the compilation is 'Beauty and the Beast,' this version attributed to Gabrielle de Villeneuve, who published it in 1740 and 1756. Quiller-Couch had this to say regarding his translation of these tales: I began by translating Perrault' s tales, very nearly word for word....the translations, when finished, did not satisfy me, and so I turned back to the beginning and have rewritten the stories in my own way, which (as you may say with the Irish butler) may not be the best claret, but 'tis the best we ve got....

Download or read book The Sleeping Beauty and other fairy tales from the Old French written by Charles Perrault and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sleeping Beauty and other fairy tales from the Old French is a collection of children's fantasy stories by Charles Perrault. was a French author who laid the foundations for the fairy tale as a literary genre. Excerpt: "Once upon a time there lived a King and a Queen, who lacked but one thing on earth to make them entirely happy. The King was young, handsome, and wealthy; the Queen had a nature as good and gentle as her face was beautiful; and they adored one another, having married for love—which among kings and queens is not always the rule. Moreover, they reigned over a kingdom at peace, and their people were devoted to them. What more, then, could they possibly want? Well, they wanted one thing very badly, and the lack of it grieved them more than words can tell. They had no child. Vows, pilgrimages, all ways were tried; yet for a long while nothing came of it all, and the poor Queen especially was in despair. At last, however, to her own and her husband's inexpressible joy, she gave birth to a daughter. As soon as the palace guns announced this event, the whole nation went wild with delight. Flags waved everywhere, bells were set pealing until the steeples rocked, crowds tossed up their hats and cheered, while the soldiers presented arms, and even strangers meeting in the street fell upon each other's neck, exclaiming: 'Our Queen has a daughter! Yes, yes—Our Queen has a daughter! Long live the little Princess!'"

Download or read book The Sleeping Beauty and Other Fairy Tales written by Arthur Quiller-Couch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sleeping Beauty, and Other Fairy Tales: From the Old French Englishman found time to read at large in the Caez'net a'es Fees, he would have discovered therein much to corroborate the evidence steadily and unconsciously borne by his own journals - that the urbanity of life among the French upper classes was genuine, reflecting a real and (for a whole society) a remarkable sunniness of disposition. Unconscious of their doom, the little victims played. But they did play; and they fell victims, not to their own passions, but to a form of government economically rotten. Download or read book Sleeping Beauty Original Text with Classic Illustrations written by Charles Perrault and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Veiled in a thick and thorny wood, an enchanted princess lies sleeping for a century, awaiting a prince, whose time has come to break the spell. The original tale of The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood was written by Charles Perrault, inventor of the modern fairy tale and creator of such timeless characters as Little Red Riding Hood and Puss in Boots. It is among the most beautiful and enduring of all stories, and has inspired hundreds of adaptations, including Disney's Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent. This edition combines Søren Filipski's lively modern translation with two famous sets of vintage illustrations: E. Monnin's lavish engravings from the great 1843 Curmer edition and those of the French master Gustave Doré, from Tales from Mother Goose. Both sets provide a rich, dramatic visual compliment to this haunting tale of love and the passage of time. Also included in the translation is the continuing story of the Princess's life in the years after she awakes, omitted from nearly all modern editions.
