Book excerpt: “Marc Webb’s new book speaks of a very precious commodity to us all—SLEEP! It is a gift of God. It is a blessing that reminds us how great God is and how human we are. But this book is also a gift in teaching an overview of the biblical story from the biblical text on sleep. I promise, it won’t put you to sleep!” Bryant Wright, President of Send Relief “Dr. Marc Webb had me hooked with the title of his book. As a big fan of sleep, including the occasional nap, I couldn’t wait to dive into what he discovered in Scripture about this gracious gift from God. I recommend Dr. Webb’s book, as he traces the God-given gift of sleep throughout the Old and New Testament.” Todd Gray, Executive Director-Treasurer for The Kentucky Baptist Convention “Among books on the work/rest rhythm, Marc Webb’s work studies the actual act of sleep in the Bible. His insights are both thoughtful and vulnerable concerning the causes and consequences of sleep – using sometimes unexpected biblical passages. This is an original and helpful resource in understanding such an important part of our lives.” Taylor Field, Send Relief Missionary and author of Upside Down Leadership

Book Representations of the Afterlife in Luke Acts

Download or read book Representations of the Afterlife in Luke Acts written by Alexey Somov and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions regarding the afterlife are many, and the Gospel of Luke and the book of Acts pay a great deal of attention to them: why does Luke speak about several different forms of the afterlife? Why is resurrection described as a person's transformation into an angelic being? How many abodes are appointed for the righteous and the wicked after death? Alexey Somov addresses these queries in relation to the apparent confusion and variety found in the text, and in respect of the interrelatedness of these issues, and their connection with other eschatological issues in Luke-Acts, and in relation to the wider cultural context of the Mediterranean world to which Luke belonged. Every culture expresses its beliefs by means of special metaphors that allow it to comprehend supernatural realities in terms of everyday experience. Belief in the afterlife was part of this metaphorical system which Luke shared with the ancient eastern Mediterranean culture. Somov takes his analysis one step further by applying Cognitive Metaphor Theory to selected metaphorical aspects of the afterlife. While the inconsistencies and incoherence of the combined metaphors may seem jarring to a contemporary Western reader, Somov's reading enables a recognition of the specific religious metaphors used, which for Luke would have been current and widely accepted.

Book Secrets from Heaven Hidden Treasure of Faith in the Parables and Conversations of Jesus

Download or read book Secrets from Heaven Hidden Treasure of Faith in the Parables and Conversations of Jesus written by Fr Sebastian Walshe and published by Catholic Answers Press. This book was released on 2020-05 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatest teacher who ever lived, Jesus knew how to reach his audience where they were at. Whether preaching to a group in parable or holding an intimate conversation, he had an unequaled ability to get across the message that his listeners needed to hear. His teachings in the Gospels speak no less directly to us today. But so rich in meaning are the words of our incarnate God, so layered and profound his messages, that often we fail to do more than scratch their surface. And over time, our habit of superficial encounter with the Word can become self- perpetuating. In Secrets from Heaven, Fr. Sebastian Walshe helps you break free from stale and familiar takes on the Gospel, giving you new eyes to see and new ears to hear the inexhaustible depths of Christ's wisdom. The Parable of the Sowers, the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son, the woman caught in adultery - all these and more come alive in fresh ways, revealing significant details and nuances, scriptural/historical connections, and testaments to Christ's rhetorical and pedagogical genius that you've never noted before. You'll marvel at Jesus' skill as an evangelist; but more importantly, you'll be powerfully moved to faith and love just as those who heard him in person long ago. Nothing Jesus taught was truly "secret" - he revealed the Father for all the world to see. But that doesn't mean his revelation is simplistic. Read Secrets from Heaven and go deeper into the saving mysteries of his life and words.

Book Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament

Download or read book Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament written by G. Johannes Botterweck and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1974 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multivolume work is still proving to be as fundamental to Old Testament studies as its companion set, the Kittel-Friedrich Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, has been to New Testament studies. Beginning with father, and continuing through the alphabet, the TDOT volumes present in-depth discussions of the key Hebrew and Aramaic words in the Old Testament. Leading scholars of various religious traditions (including Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, Greek Orthodox, and Jewish) and from many parts of the world (Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States) have been carefully selected for each article by editors Botterweck, Ringgren, and Fabry and their consultants, George W. Anderson, Henri Cazelles, David Noel Freedman, Shemaryahu Talmon, and Gerhard Wallis. The intention of the writers is to concentrate on meaning, starting from the more general, everyday senses and building to an understanding of theologically significant concepts. To avoid artificially restricting the focus of the articles, TDOT considers under each keyword the larger groups of words that are related linguistically or semantically. The lexical work includes detailed surveys of a word s occurrences, not only in biblical material but also in other ancient Near Eastern writings. Sumerian, Akkadian, Egyptian, Ethiopic, Ugaritic, and Northwest Semitic sources are surveyed, among others, as well as the Qumran texts and the Septuagint; and in cultures where no cognate word exists, the authors often consider cognate ideas. TDOT s emphasis, though, is on Hebrew terminology and on biblical usage. The contributors employ philology as well as form-critical and traditio-historical methods, with the aim of understanding the religious statements in the Old Testament. Extensive bibliographical information adds to the value of this reference work. This English edition attempts to serve the needs of Old Testament students without the linguistic background of more advanced scholars; it does so, however, without sacrificing the needs of the latter. Ancient scripts (Hebrew, Greek, etc.) are regularly transliterated in a readable way, and meanings of foreign words are given in many cases where the meanings might be obvious to advanced scholars. Where the Hebrew text versification differs from that of English Bibles, the English verse appears in parentheses. Such features will help all earnest students of the Bible to avail themselves of the manifold theological insights contained in this monumental work.

Book Dreams and Dream Reports in the Writings of Josephus

Download or read book Dreams and Dream Reports in the Writings of Josephus written by Gnuse and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyzes the understanding of dreams and the corresponding literary forms used by Josephus in his writings. Josephus reports dreams as either auditory message dreams, symbolic visual dreams, or dream image appearances. Close attention is given to the following topics: 1) the development of dream reports in the ancient Near East, the Bible, and the Hellenistic world; 2) Josephus' views on dreams and prophecy; 3) a form-critical assessment of Josephus' dream reports; and 4) an evaluation of Josephan dream reports which exhibit a more complex traditio-historical development.

Book A Story of YHWH

    Book Details:
  • Author : Shawn W. Flynn
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2019-09-06
  • ISBN : 1317247132
  • Pages : 403 pages

Download or read book A Story of YHWH written by Shawn W. Flynn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-06 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Story of YHWH investigates the ancient Israelite expression of their deity, and tracks why variation occurred in that expression, from the early Iron Age to the Persian period. Through this text, readers will gain a better appreciation for the complexities and contexts in the development of YHWH, from its earliest origins to the Persian period. Two interpretive frameworks–cultural translation and subversive reception–are offered for filtering through the textual data and contexts. Comparative study with ancient Near Eastern deities and select biblical texts lead readers through early YHWHism, YHWH’s original outsider status, and the eventual impact of urbanization on the expression. Perceived and real pressures then challenge urbanite YHWHism and invite new directions for forming a unique expression of divinity in the ancient world. This book is intended for those interested in the study of ancient divinity broadly as well as those who study ancient Israel and the Hebrew Bible. The work provides generalists with a better appreciation for the particular challenges in working in the ancient Near East and with the bible specifically, while it provides specialists with a broad theory that can be continually tested. For both, the study provides two reading lenses to work through similar questions and an accounting of why the many contextually driven and varied constructions of YHWH may have occurred.
