Book excerpt: THIS IS EDEN? is a historical fiction about the life of Hattie and John Burley and their six strong-willed children in the early twentieth century. As it begins they are living in a two story wooden structure in Chicago. John is a bit of a dreamer who works for a dairy but feels led to pastor a church. He sees his opportunity in the Chicago Tribune: The Soo Line Railroad advertises land he can afford in north/central Wisconsin. He packs up his family and all their worldly possessions and sends them off to begin settling the land without him. Hattie is a strong, principled woman. She is resourceful, thrifty, and a devoted mother. She needs all her resources to survive the many difficulties she faces in the primitive wilds of Wisconsin in 1913. The story shows how the love of land and the struggles to keep it forms in a person and grows in ones heart.

Book My Spectacular Bid

Download or read book My Spectacular Bid written by Steven L. Werder and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2015-11-23 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let me pull up my chair and tell you my story. But, my story is to be read as a conversation; not as some pure and perfect work of literature. It’s not a story of fantasy or science fiction, but it’s a story of mystery, intrigue, murder and young teenaged boys looking and finding a life full of adventures in a world that exists only at night. Have you ever been sitting on the hood of a car, on a dark gravel road when heat lightning can be seen high in the late night sky. And, at the same time the Whippoorwill birds begin to sound off and the lightning bugs light up all around you, so many of them that you can see your friends face. All of that, while you listen to an eight track tape of some good rock and roll music. So, this is how two teenaged boys, named Dunny and SL spend their weekends as they live in a small town and grow up in Callaway County Missouri in the 1970’s. The raw and energetic teenagers have to run and be free. They can be compared to the free and raw spirit of the champion thoroughbred “Spectacular Bid” who loves to run hard and fast. And so, run is what they do, but not one of them can see what is waiting for them at the finish line. I invite you to read my story, but really, what mean to say is listen to my story through my written words and in the end you just might say “ and it sounded good.”

Book Freedom

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sebastian Junger
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2021-05-18
  • ISBN : 1982153431
  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book Freedom written by Sebastian Junger and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A profound rumination on the concept of freedom from the New York Times bestselling author of Tribe. Throughout history, humans have been driven by the quest for two cherished ideals: community and freedom. The two don’t coexist easily. We value individuality and self-reliance, yet are utterly dependent on community for our most basic needs. In this intricately crafted and thought-provoking book, Sebastian Junger examines the tension that lies at the heart of what it means to be human. For much of a year, Junger and three friends—a conflict photographer and two Afghan War vets—walked the railroad lines of the East Coast. It was an experiment in personal autonomy, but also in interdependence. Dodging railroad cops, sleeping under bridges, cooking over fires, and drinking from creeks and rivers, the four men forged a unique reliance on one another. In Freedom, Junger weaves his account of this journey together with primatology and boxing strategy, the history of labor strikes and Apache raiders, the role of women in resistance movements, and the brutal reality of life on the Pennsylvania frontier. Written in exquisite, razor-sharp prose, the result is a powerful examination of the primary desire that defines us.

Book Rhythms of Grace

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kerri Weems
  • Publisher : Zondervan
  • Release : 2014-10-07
  • ISBN : 0310330793
  • Pages : 225 pages

Download or read book Rhythms of Grace written by Kerri Weems and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is not a sprint; it’s a marathon. These well-known words of wisdom remind us to pace ourselves in the journey of life so we reach the finish line with no regrets. Pacing yourself is not as easy as it sounds. Life tends to take on a pace of its own which when left unchecked, will drive us toward burnout and fatigue. We can easily become driven by care, worry, and ambition rather than led by the Holy Spirit. We may tend to think of burnout as a modern problem, but we can see that people in Jesus’ day felt their own kind of spiritual and emotional fatigue. Why else would Jesus have said these comforting words? Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly (Matt. 11:28-30; The Message). Even though he spoke these words more than two millennia ago, Jesus’ call to rest and peace seem tailor-made to fit this generation. Author Kerri Weems had let the pace and rhythm of her life get out of control. At first the consequences were only physical, but they quickly impacted her spiritual life. Since then, God has been teaching her to walk in time with him; he is teaching her to be led rather than driven. In this book, she opens up her life and shares this journey with the reader. God’s best for each of us is that we go the full distance of our race, and not just crawl exhausted across the finish line. God wants us to enjoy the race and cross the line with our heads held high, a smile on our faces, and our arms lifted in a double fist-punch! Getting to that moment is all about learning the rhythms of grace and pacing ourselves for the long run.

Book Going Underground

Download or read book Going Underground written by Lara Langer Cohen and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-16 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First popularized by newspaper coverage of the Underground Railroad in the 1840s, the underground serves as a metaphor for subversive activity that remains central to our political vocabulary. In Going Underground, Lara Langer Cohen excavates the long history of this now familiar idea while seeking out versions of the underground that were left behind along the way. Outlining how the underground’s figurative sense first took shape through the associations of literal subterranean spaces with racialized Blackness, she examines a vibrant world of nineteenth-century US subterranean literature that includes Black radical manifestos, anarchist periodicals, sensationalist exposés of the urban underworld, manuals for sex magic, and the initiation rites of secret societies. Cohen finds that the undergrounds in this literature offer sites of political possibility that exceed the familiar framework of resistance, suggesting that nineteenth-century undergrounds can inspire new modes of world-making and world-breaking for a time when this world feels increasingly untenable.
