Book The Unreasonable Virtue of Fly Fishing

Download or read book The Unreasonable Virtue of Fly Fishing written by Mark Kurlansky and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Outdoor Book Award Winner for Outdoor Literature From the award-winning, bestselling author of Cod-the irresistible story of the science, history, art, and culture of the least efficient way to catch a fish. Fly fishing, historian Mark Kurlansky has found, is a battle of wits, fly fisher vs. fish-and the fly fisher does not always (or often) win. The targets-salmon, trout, and char; and for some, bass, tarpon, tuna, bonefish, and even marlin-are highly intelligent, athletic animals. The allure, Kurlansky learns, is that fly fishing makes catching a fish as difficult as possible. The flies can be beautiful and intricate, some made with over two dozen pieces of feather and fur; the cast is a matter of grace and rhythm, with different casts and rods yielding varying results. Kurlansky is known for his deep dives into specific subjects, from cod to oysters to salt. But he spent his boyhood days on the shore of a shallow pond. Here, where tiny fish weaved under a rocky waterfall, he first tied string to a branch, dangled a worm into the water, and unleashed his passion for fishing. Since then, his love of the sport has led him around the world's countries, coasts, and rivers-from the wilds of Alaska to Basque country, from Ireland and Norway to Russia and Japan. And, in true Kurlansky fashion, he absorbed every fact, detail, and anecdote along the way. The Unreasonable Virtue of Fly Fishing marries Kurlansky's signature wide-ranging reach with a subject that has captivated him for a lifetime-combining history, craft, and personal memoir to show readers, devotees of the sport or not, the necessity of experiencing nature's balm first-hand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fighter pilots experience the fastest acceleration on earth. However, during training, the expression, “that pilot is all thrust and no vector,” can be heard. It describes a pilot who is going nowhere fast. That concept holds true in our lives and especially in business. We live in an age of instant information, where everything moves at the speed of light. Do you ever feel that you are going fast but getting nowhere? Accelerator Leaders learn how to focus and act so that their acceleration results in real impact. Discover how to be an Accelerator Leader to accelerate yourself, those around you and your organization. Book Review 1: "Alvin Rohrs is a remarkable leader. He "Accelerated" the growth of a small regional non-profit organization dedicated to inspiring students to improve the world through entrepreneurial action, Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE), to a place where it has become the largest organization of it's kind in the world, now known as Enactus, leveraging the resources of over 500 corporate partners, in 36 countries, engaged with over 1,700 colleges and universities, nearly 70,000 students, and impacting over a million people a year. Without Alvin at the helm of the ship, this extraordinary story of growth and contribution is impossible to imagine. Leveraging his extraordinary knowledge and experiences, Alvin is a gifted and inspiring speaker about everything from leadership, to accelerating organization and personal growth, to leading a meaningful and fulfilling everyday life. His wit, wisdom, and storytelling are second to none. I highly recommend him as a speaker extraordinaire." -- Douglas R. Conant, Former Chairman SIFE/Enactus Founder and CEO Conant Leadership; Retired CEO Campbell Soup Company; Former Chairman Avon Products Book Review 2: "Not only is Alvin Rohrs one of the most moving and powerful speakers I know he is also a great coach on what it means to be a leader and really move an organization towards success. He quickly grasps challenges and he understands people. He is perceptive and knows how to organize and motivate people to solve problems." -- Matt Blunt, 54th Governor of Missouri Book Review 3: "[His] stories themselves and [his] story telling style make this [book] a joy to read." -- Doug McMillon, CEO of Walmart

Book I Won t Be Home Next Summer

Download or read book I Won t Be Home Next Summer written by Ron Selley and published by 30 Degrees South Publishers. This book was released on 2014-10-19 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ronnie Selley, a South African from rural Natal, joined the RAF on a short-service commission in 1937, considered the Golden Age of aviation. During these glory years of Howard Hughes and Amelia Earhart few guessed at the brewing storm and dark days to come. After completing his training on antiquated First World War aircraft, Selley was posted to 220 Squadron Coastal Command, the RAFÕs under-staffed and under-equipped poor relation to the more prestigious Fighter and Bomber Commands. Tasked with reconnaissance, convoy patrols and submarine-hunting the pilots of Coastal Command chalked up more flying hours than any other RAF Command. It was not uncommon for pilots to be in the air, searching the waters of the North Atlantic, for up to sixteen hours a day, in aircraft that were neither capable of such ranges nor, initially, adequately armed to defend their charges. From the outbreak of war until after its cessation Coastal Command had aircraft in the air twenty-four hours a day, every single day. The toll this took on the men of Coastal Command was unthinkable. The first RAF pilot to sink a German U-boat, Selley went on the win the DFC for his actions during the Dunkirk evacuation. He won high praise and newspaper headlines such as ÒPlane fights 13 German warshipsÓ, ÒOne RAF man bombs 3 ships, routs NazisÓ and ÒOne against eightÓ were not uncommon. Selley subsequently suffered acute battle fatigue and spent time convalescing at the Dunblane Hydro. Thereafter, he was posted by the Air Ministry as Air Vice-Marshal BreeseÕs personal pilot. On 5 March 1941 Ronnie Selley, Air Vice-Marshal Breese and the entire crew of the fully armed Lockheed Hudson they was flying experienced engine problems, lost speed, stalled and exploded on impact at Wick in northern Scotland.

At least I can catch fish consistently and, more importantly, most of the time I know why I am catching them. If you don't know anything about fly-fishing, this is the book for you because that was exactly my situation a few years ago. The book will help anyone to catch fish using a flyrod without any prior knowledge.
