Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IACP COOKBOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNER • In the first cookbook by a Black pitmaster, James Beard Award–winning chef Rodney Scott celebrates an incredible culinary legacy through his life story, family traditions, and unmatched dedication to his craft. “BBQ is such an important part of African American history, and no one is better at BBQ than Rodney.”—Marcus Samuelsson, chef and restaurateur ONE OF THE BEST COOKBOOKS OF THE YEAR: The New York Times, The Washington Post, Time Out, Food52, Taste of Home, Garden & Gun, Epicurious, Vice, Salon, Southern Living, Wired, Library Journal Rodney Scott was born with barbecue in his blood. He cooked his first whole hog, a specialty of South Carolina barbecue, when he was just eleven years old. At the time, he was cooking at Scott's Bar-B-Q, his family's barbecue spot in Hemingway, South Carolina. Now, four decades later, he owns one of the country's most awarded and talked-about barbecue joints, Rodney Scott's Whole Hog BBQ in Charleston. In this cookbook, co-written by award-winning writer Lolis Eric Elie, Rodney spills what makes his pit-smoked turkey, barbecued spare ribs, smoked chicken wings, hush puppies, Ella's Banana Puddin', and award-winning whole hog so special. Moreover, his recipes make it possible to achieve these special flavors yourself, whether you're a barbecue pro or a novice. From the ins and outs of building your own pit to poignant essays on South Carolinian foodways and traditions, this stunningly photographed cookbook is the ultimate barbecue reference. It is also a powerful work of storytelling. In this modern American success story, Rodney details how he made his way from the small town where he worked for his father in the tobacco fields and in the smokehouse, to the sacrifices he made to grow his family's business, and the tough decisions he made to venture out on his own in Charleston. Rodney Scott's World of BBQ is an uplifting story that speaks to how hope, hard work, and a whole lot of optimism built a rich celebration of his heritage—and of unforgettable barbecue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Fathers Day, I hadnt received any calls from my kids. As I lay on the couch, my whole life flashed before me, remembering I left Greece as a young boy working on a ship as a captain cadet. I jumped ship in Australia and became an illegal immigrant. I write about my first job, first affair, going to Sydney, and my first job at the Sydney Water Board, highlighting the corruption. I also write about the job I got at Julia Creek and how the company went broke and the odyssey of four days trying to reach Sydney with no money. I talk about the job I had at Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme, highlighting the illegal gambling; the job I had at the CDW in Sydney; and my painting career. I write about the Australian culture and drinking at pubs every lunch time. I write about meeting my first wife and having two children and an unsuccessful marriage. I had a lot of affairs, and I did like the nightlife. The economy slowed down, and I started working at Ansett in the scullery section. I also talk about being a union delegate of the LTU (John Morris was the then secretary and labor senator). There was a lot of controversy, and I had to change sections after pressure from Ansett. I feared for my life, and I was forced to leave the company. I write about the seventies and eighties and the nightlife, entertainment, discos, bars, and piano bars, including the best of them allJulianas at the Hilton Hotel, the Americas Cup Bar, and the Centerpoint Piano Bar. I write about how I experienced the nightlife and the affairs. In other words, I did it my way. I write about divorcing my first wife; how I met my second wife, who also bore me two children; and the death of my wife at age forty-five.

Download or read book Letters to My Mother written by Mary Ruth Borg and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I knew I liked to write when I was a teenager, locking myself in my room. I was angry, frustrated and needed a positive outlet. I was tired of breaking things. I was sad having to pick up pieces of my little treasures. So I picked up a pencil to write about how I felt and why I was being self-destructive. I was determined to find a way to diffuse the confusion in my head. Taught very early to pray, I'd put my prayers on paper. Seeing something written brought me back into reality. I had a reference point. Something I could read over and over to remind myself who I was and that I would be okay. This is my story of survival. My journey from the traumatic experience of being molested countless times by my step-father while living within the strict religious practices of Jehovah's Witnesses to my healing process with Parents United. I thought my life of confusion, mistrust and low self-esteem could never change. As I got older, I attracted more dysfunction in my choices. I didn't know I could change that. I didn't know any better. I became afraid for my children. I thought I was crazy and didn't have good parenting skills. After years of therapy, I learned to have control over my life and how to take the power back that I kept giving away. I am no longer a victim. It has been a long and twisty road. Today, I am proud to be happy, healthy and productive in my world. I am proud to be a survivor! I hope to inspire others and give them hope that the craziness in their heads can go away. I want to keep talking about this until the cycle is broken and all children are safe.

Download or read book Conservative Survival Guide to San Francisco written by Thomas Moyer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-02-24 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the English poet Rudyard Kipling, the city of San Francisco has only one drawback – ‘tis hard to leave. Author Thomas Moyer, a conservative by choice, couldn’t agree more as he calls The City by the Bay his home yet finds it quite different from the city he imagined it to be over a decade ago. In Conservative Survival Guide to San Francisco, he takes readers into the dual facets of the Paris of the West --- the city with lush greenery, panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean on one side and its band of hippies, drug addicts and liberals on one end. More than just a literary piece tackling the division of the world into being conservative or being liberal, this highly insightful work of Moyer is part travel guide, part personal memoir, and part political commentary. Like Group Captain Lionel Mandrake in Stanley Kubrick’s Cold War dark comedy, “Dr. Strangelove”, Moyer stays true to his ideals of doing the best he can under less-than-ideal condtions while most of the people around him are a bit crazy, weak willed, or downright odd. “To be clear then, just as Mandrake loved the world of Strangelove, I love this city. It’s my home here, now and forever. But I have some serious misgivings about San Francisco’s politics,” Moyer wrote in the introduction. “My intention in writing this book is to bring to light the good, the bad, and the wacky aspects of San Francisco. If you’re a conservative of any shade or degree who’s planning on visiting or moving to the city, or even the Bay Area, more generally, I’m going to be your tour guide on your trip down into the rabbit hole of San Francisco. And I’m going to show you how to manage to keep your conservative morals intact when surrounded on all sides by the exotic lunacy of this Strangelove-like world.” Moyer provides a conservative insider’s perspective into San Francisco in Conservative Survival Guide to San Francisco —its people, culture, politics, and what it’s really like to be a “Mandrake” inside the most liberal city in America. More importantly, he shows conservative readers how he learned to stop worrying and love the city. Conservative Survival Guide to San Francisco is more than just a looking glass into the bipolarities of the cool grey city of love. It also takes into account the author’s experiences in the most liberal city in America and is meant to show a snapshot into the life of a conservative. At turns striking and original, this eruditely crafted piece is the ultimate guide to the rabbit hole that is San Francisco.

Download or read book A Man of Two Countries written by Susil C. Acharyya and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book Dipak read to father and his wife Karabi, the Calcutta morning newspaper, which said: Third day after the classic fight at Listowel, Canada, Dr. Sanat Roy was on his deathbed after the fight. Helen was also injured badly. There is no trace of them in the local hospital. Nobody knows if Dr. Roy is dead or alive. This Indo-Canadian is a brilliant, strange man. People last heard about him nearly two years ago when he suddenly left the company he built to a large, most successful technology company in North America. Since then, he totally vanished from the public eye. It is now confirmed that Dr. Roy is the famous best-selling novelist Loner, the pen name he used. He also established, expanded, and supported alone an ashram in Delhi for young, helpless girls to stand on their own feet. He also supported two orphanages in Calcutta. He donated large sums of money to medical research in Canadian hospitals. People are surprised how this man, without any work, was getting over a million dollars for philanthropy alone. People are puzzled that a devoted family man like Dr. Roy was with Helen, an unknown, white Canadian woman at the time of the fight instead of his own Indian wife. This Indo-Canadian laid down his life to protect Helen from being gang-raped by the motorcycle gang without considering his own Indian family. Reporters are vigorously investigating the private life of this talented, enigmatic Indian from a Calcutta affluent family. Dipak put the paper down and closed his eyes. Father went quietly to his room. Karabi, wiping her tearful eyes with her saree, went to her bedroom. Dipak pondered, I may not see my beloved Dada (elder brother) again. Everybody loves him so deeply. This story, A Man of Two Countries, casts light on the exciting private life of Dr. Sanat Roy, who made people love him even with all his faults.

Download or read book My Recipe for Cultural Interchange written by Sarj and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my 433 page book, I explain that all cultures can learn from each other and my goal is to help people on each side of this cultural interaction because I have experienced the complexities and misunderstandings of cultural differences and sensitivities/insensitivities and I want to help bridge the gaps between cultures. I know that it is necessary for international students, parents, host families, migrants and refugees to prepare themselves well before they live in another culture because I remember what I had to experience when I moved from the East to live in the West many years ago. Let me share with you some of my experiences as a traveler and Homestay mother. Some of my stories are funny and some are sad, but they are all very relevant to the realities of this experience that we all call life. I have learnt that it is inevitable that people will change as a direct result of cultural interaction and exchange and that is why I have referred to this two-way experience as Cultural Interchange.
