Book Architectural Design and Ethics

Download or read book Architectural Design and Ethics written by Thomas Fisher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-05-09 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architectural Design and Ethics offers both professional architects and architecture students a theoretical base and numerous suggestions as to how we might rethink our responsibilities to the natural world and design a more sustainable future for ourselves. As we find ourselves on the steep slope of several exponential growth curves – in global population, in heat-trapping atmospheric gases, in the gap between the rich and poor, and in the demand for finite resources, Fisher lays down a theory of architecture based on ethics and explores how buildings can and do provide both social and moral dimensions. The book also has practical goals, demonstrating how architects can make better and more beautiful buildings whilst nurturing more responsible, sustainable development. Architectural Design and Ethics will prove an invaluable text not only to those in the architecture field, but to anyone simply interested in the ethical issues surrounding our built environment.

Book excerpt: An unforgettable look at an obscure part of the deep south just before the dawning of the Civil Rights movement and the turbulent 1960s would forever change it forever. A unique blend of humor, pathos, and bitter reality throws a harsh and revealing light on this this strange time and the people who were a part of it. Examine a place where the past is never past, and history hangs over the hot dirt roads and swamps like a morning mist. Examine a now forgotten world where men could die over a load of wet cotton, a cock fight, a fence line, a missing hog, or a romantic promise not kept. A place where the past lies like a rattlesnake under a bush waiting to strike. A world where little boys had hookworms and old black men sold Bolita. A world where a dream book could tell the future and a root doctor could cure an illness or fix a romance gone bad. It is a strange and mysterious world, full of fear and superstitions, strange people and strange customs. It is a world where black magic and old time religion go hand in hand. A world of tobacco fields and outhouses, pulpwood and moonshine stills, juke joints and whore houses. In the fall of 1959, a small group of frightened young high school boys gather in the late afternoon twilight to become a part of their local chapter of the Future Farmers of America. However, this was to be much more than a simple initiation. This was to become more than just one more school function. This night would change all their lives as they have to decide what price was too much to pay for being one of The Ag Boys.

Book excerpt: ALL-NEW STORIES OF ANCIENT ALIEN ARTIFACTS FROM TOP NAMES IN SCIENCE FICTION & FANTASY The universe is older and more alien than we can ever understand. We were not alone. The farther we push into the universe, the more obvious it becomes. The signs are everywhere: canals and pyramids on Mars, old roads on the moons of Jupiter, ruined cities on worlds about the nearer stars. The galaxy once teemed with life, or so it seems. Which begs the question: What happened to it all? These stories explore the ruins of lost civilizations, solve ancient mysteries . . .and awaken horrors from beyond the dawn of time. Featuring stories by Orson Scott Card, Griffin Barber, Adam Oyebanji, Jessica Maguire, Patrick Chiles, and an all-new entry in the Sun Eater universe from editor Christopher Ruocchio. Join us for your next adventure to Worlds Long Lost! At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). About Star Destroyers, coedited by Christopher Ruocchio: “. . . spectacular space battles and alien contacts . . . themes of military ethics, the uses of artificial intelligence, and the limits of the capacity of the human mind. . . . it is the human interactions and decisions that ultimately drive the stories. . . . will appeal to fans of military and hard science fiction and any readers fascinated by the possibilities of space travel.”—Booklist “. . . stories of giant spaceships at war, at peace, and in the often-gray areas between. . . . a worthy addition to a long tradition of ship-based fiction, and its authors portray captains, arcane astrogators, and civilian child passengers with equal depth. It’s recommended for fans of military SF and space adventure.”—Publishers Weekly “. . . you’d probably expect some tight, action-filled space opera stories of giant space battles . . . and there’s some of that. But there are also espionage stories, rescue missions, political conflicts, alternate histories, even a few humorous tales. . . . each author took the premise in a different direction . . . if I had to identify one common feature to all the stories, it would be that they’re all fun. . . . Like it says, big ships blowing things up. What’s not to like?”—Analog About Sword & Planet, edited by Christopher Ruocchio: "...the wide mix of stories, and the surprising places they go make this anthology a particular joy from start to finish... ofers a glimpse into everything that made stories like these a popular standby since the pulp era, with enough creativity, variety and talent showcased to prove that there's still plenty of life in the century-old genre... I recommend it heartily."—Analog "Sword & Planet breathes new life into a genre that many understandably felt was left moldering in the grave. It’s old-school wonder with twenty-first century polish - what’s not to like?" —Warped Factor

Book excerpt: First in an epic trilogy that begins in the antebellum South, where a swindler and a group of runaway slaves fight against an evil plantation owner’s legacy. 1859. When his latest business venture goes bust, Durksen Hurst finds himself on the run from a mob—and in the last place he ever wanted to be: Turkle, Mississippi. In the thirty years since Hurst had been there, a lot has changed. The only plantation that has survived is the one owned by the French family. Missus Marie Brussard French runs her dominion with a strong hand and an iron will, never giving her son, Devereau, the authority and independence he so desperately craves. And now their power faces its greatest threat . . . Hurst has pitched a new scheme to a group of runaway slaves he encountered. He’ll make them freedmen and partners on the plantation he’s dreamed of building. All Hurst has to do is pull two deadly swindles: get a Chickasaw chief to sign over the land, and convince a government agent to transform the document into a deed. But the Frenches have their own secrets to hide—and don’t need a rival landowner threatening their hold on the town. The appearance of a beautiful and mysterious woman only adds fuel to the fire. And as rumors of a civil war swirl throughout the South, the fight between Hurst and the Frenches turns into a battle neither can afford to lose . . . “The action and drama are compelling from the first page to the exciting conclusion.” —Historical Novel Society

Book Consciousness and the Existence of God

Download or read book Consciousness and the Existence of God written by J.P. Moreland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-04-26 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Consciousness and the Existence of God, J.P. Moreland argues that the existence of finite, irreducible consciousness (or its regular, law-like correlation with physical states) provides evidence for the existence of God. Moreover, he analyzes and criticizes the top representative of rival approaches to explaining the origin of consciousness, including John Searle’s contingent correlation, Timothy O’Connor’s emergent necessitation, Colin McGinn’s mysterian ‘‘naturalism,’’ David Skrbina’s panpsychism and Philip Clayton’s pluralistic emergentist monism. Moreland concludes that these approaches should be rejected in favor of what he calls ‘‘the Argument from Consciousness.’’

Book excerpt: This is a book about turtles. Well, really it is a book about the theory of turtles. Although the book makes little mention of the actual turtles themselves, it acts as an allegorical tale of a turtle that has lived a long life in the desert. This turtle became very dry and dusty. It was so dehydrated that it was certain it was going to dry up completely and become nothing more than a crumbling shell on the hard desert ground. As it lay dying and dehydrated on the desert floor, a vulture came to flip it over and peck at the insides, wishing to enjoy delicious turtle soup. When the vulture swooped down to commit this act, the turtle discovered that it is in fact a tortoise. This is the tale of that vulture and how that vulture ended up saving the life of the turtle. This vulture ended up showing the turtle that there are many other turtles in the desert. And also it showed the turtle that it was in fact a dove or maybe a stork. This book is the baby.
