Book excerpt: "5 star classic"--RT RT Career Achievement Award - Futuristic Romance RT Readers Choice Best Book Award A legendary warrior and a slave with dangerous secrets. Bound by a love neither expected or wanted. A need for revenge. Hunted by the Coalition and haunted by his past, Dax Silverbrake is determined that those who conquered his planet, almost completely destroying the Triotian people, will not enslave his young ward. But to rescue her, he must also rescue a woman who wears the notorious Coalition slave collar--a woman whose secrets could destroy what is left of his soul. An unforgivable past. Once an integral part of the Coalition command structure, collared slave Califa Claxton hides secrets that could mean her death by rebels and the Coalition alike. Her biggest fear is that the one act of courage which left her collared may never be enough to erase the past or give her a future. One chance, two souls who need redemption. An unexpected and white-hot passion might change everything--if they can put the past behind them and risk everything for the rebellion. Author of more than 60 books (she sold her first ten in less than two years), Justine Dare Davis is a four-time winner of the coveted RWA RITA Award and has been inducted into the RWA Hall of Fame. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The torpedo-bomber was a very short-lived weapon system, operational for scarcely half a century from just prior WWI to the 1960s. Yet during its brief existence it transformed naval warfare, extending the ship-killing range of ships and coastal defences to hundreds of miles. The Royal Navy and Fleet Air Arm led the way, recording the first sinking of a ship by aerial torpedo in August 1915 but all major navies eagerly developed their own torpedo bomber forces. The torpedo-bomber reached its zenith in WWII, particularly from 1940-42, with notable successes at the Battle of Taranto, the sinking of the Bismarck and Pearl Harbor. It was the weapon of choice for both the US and Japanese in the big Pacific battles such as Midway. In the latter stages of the war, increasingly effective anti-aircraft fire and interceptor aircraft started to render it obsolete, a process completed post-war by long-range anti-ship missiles. Jean-Denis Lepage traces the development of torpedo bombers worldwide, describing their tactics, operational history and the aircraft themselves, including such well-loved types as the Swordfish, Beaufighter and Avenger. Over 300 aircraft are beautifully illustrated.

Download or read book Jets at Sea written by Leo Marriott and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2009-03-09 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As World War Two drew to a close, jet-powered aircraft were beginning to be introduced into service. To take advantage of this major development it was necessary for all the worlds air powers to rethink combat tactics and develop the means of handling these faster and generally larger aircraft in the air, on land and especially at sea. As this modern breed approached and finally broke the sound barrier, so did landing and takeoff speeds. The decade after the war saw rapid developments in the design of both naval aircraft and their seaborne bases the aircraft carrier. The first jet to land aboard a carrier was a modified de Havilland Vampire in 1945 on H.M.S. Ocean. Progress was rapid and the application of British inventions such as the angled flight-deck, steam catapult and mirror landing sight soon became adopted by the major navies of the world. Naval aircraft too became more sophisticated by the addition of high-lift flap systems and strengthened undercarriages to allow them to operate more safely at sea. The author describes the development of these improvements and then their operational advantages in the Korean War and Suez. He goes on to describe the US development of a potential nuclear carrier-borne bomber, the French Navy and its withdrawal from Vietnam in 1954 and then the use of naval aircraft for anti-submarine work.

The fractured politics of the fractured 1920s Aether Age leaves a sheriff struggling to find the truth in "The More Things Change." World War II drags on into 1958 as one Australian airship officer seeks safe harbor before the lights go out during "Darkness Eternal: Over the South China Sea." In Fascist ruled skies over prohibition-era America, a rogue pilot risks all to bring down a gang of rocket pack raiders with "The Rocket Molly Syndicate."
