Download or read book Programmers and Managers written by P. Kraft and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norbert Wiener, perhaps better than anyone else, understood the intimate and delicate relationship between control and communication: that messages intended as commands do not necessarily differ from those intended simply as facts. Wiener noted the paradox when the modem computer was hardly more than a laboratory curiosity. Thirty years later, the same paradox is at the heart of a severe identity crisis which con fronts computer programmers. Are they primarily members of "management" acting as foremen, whose task it is to ensure that orders emanating from executive suites are faithfully trans lated into comprehensible messages? Or are they perhaps sim ply engineers preoccupied with the technical difficulties of relating "software" to "hardware" and vice versa? Are they aware, furthermore, of the degree to which their work whether as manager or engineer-routinizes the work of others and thereby helps shape the structure of social class relation ships? I doubt that many of us who lived through the first heady and frantic years of software development-at places like the RAND and System Development Corporations-ever took time to think about such questions. The science fiction-like setting of mysterious machines, blinking lights, and torrents of numbers served to awe outsiders who could only marvel at the complexity of it all. We were insiders who constituted a secret society into which only initiates were welcome. So today I marvel at the boundless audacity of a rank out sider in writing a book like Programmers and Managers.
Download or read book Referendum Democracy written by M. Mendelsohn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-09-25 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the referendum becomes a more regular component of decision making, it leaves few, if any, institutions, processes and values of democracy untouched. Political actors of all kinds - including political parties and interest groups - seek to use the referendum device to further their own objectives. The end result is a different kind of democracy than existed before. This book lays out the comparative research agenda on the impact of referendums on the practice of liberal democracy.

Download or read book Lifting the Cup written by Mark Metcalf and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2010-10-25 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first detailed account of Barnsley Football Club's most illustrious and successful period. Between 1910 and 1912 'Battling Barnsley' won their way through to the FA Cup Final, then the most prestigious football tournament in the world, on not one but two occasions and capped things off by beating West Bromwich Albion in the 1912 final replay at Bramall Lane, Sheffield, when Arthur Fairclough 'lifted the Cup' for the only time, so far, in the Club's long history. This centenary celebration brings the 1910-12 era back to life through match reports, and a wealth of photographs (some never seen before) and memorabilia. It also pays tribute to the extraordinary support of thousands of Barnsley fans. Against a background of major social and political change, this book also examines the careers of legendary players such as Dickie Downs, Bob Glendenning, Wilf Bartrop, Tommy Boyle, George Utley, George Lillycrop - and of course the goal-scoring hero of 1912: the great Harry Tufnell.
