This promotes the understanding that to lock down youth work in notional stasis (bolt it into a ‘carceral archipelago’) would be the antithesis of practice, which would effectively destroy it as youth work. Other writers have effectively tried to achieve just this, or perhaps identified (put a flag in) what they see (or want to be) the ‘core’ of youth work practice. But youth work is not an apple. A global and historical perspective of youth work shows it to be a relentlessly developing range of responses to a persistently growing and shifting range of phenomena, issues and directions presented by and to societies and the young people in those societies. Book excerpt: It can be easy to imagine that Child and Youth Care practitioners are inherently or naturally attuned to issues of diversity and colonization as they pertain to multicultural practice. While there are excellent culturally attuned practices that are happening in the field of Child and Youth Care, when it comes to collecting stories of cultural diversity and, more specifically, the problematic unfolding of some of these stories, there remains hesitancy in the field. This hesitancy, in part, is due to assuming we are practicing in postcolonial times, where all the messiness, the doubting, and the pain have been ‘dealt’ with. The authors of this volume suggest otherwise and their chapters represent an important contribution to the field. They are a diverse group of practitioners but they share a common concern that the term multicultural practice grooms hegemonic interventions that do not critically examine issues of power, difference, colonialism, Whiteness, or species, to name a few. Although the title of this issue is Troubling Multiculturalism, the language within this issue stretches this term, troubles it, and at times, re-invents it. Home 4 the Heart, her facility, has helped almost two hundred girls over ten years. But assisting, supporting, and advocating for the girls that live at its three facilities has required lots of creativity. While Child Protective Services wants children to do well, the youth that they place in out-of-home care often have negative life outcomes. The lack of daily intimate contact with a caregiver causes somewhat of a constant disconnect—and normal daily relationships and activities with supportive caregivers are not always possible for youth in out-of-home care. In this qualitative study of young women who aged out of out-of-home care, the author describes family life, growing up in out-of-home care, and life after aging out. The results of the study will better inform service providers working with youth in foster/group homes, schools, juvenile justice placements, and community programs. The study’s findings and insights offer more effective ways of assisting, supporting, and advocating for youth to ensure a more successful transition to independence after aging out.

Research suggests that intensive teen programs in museums are a powerful tool for youth development and audience building alike, but less is known about the impacts of drop-in teen programs. The purpose of this study was to describe how open studio programs impact youth participants' artistic self-efficacy beliefs. Questionnaires from 33 participants from three different art museum programs were analyzed, and interviews with 10 of the participants provided additional insights. Results suggest that participants perceived an increase in their self-efficacy beliefs in eight areas of artistic engagement: developing craft, engaging and persisting in their art work, envisioning further steps in their process, expressing feelings and ideas, observing the world around them, reflecting on their work and the work of others, stretching and exploring in the studio, and understanding the art community. Youth attributed the increase to specific aspects of the programs, including enactive attainment, modeling, verbal persuasion. These findings suggest that art museums may use artistic self-efficacy as an outcome for programs designed within this model.
