Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches on Both Sides of the Pacific, Vol. 1 "Occident and Orient" is the result of a nine months' trip to China, Japan, British Columbia, California, and thence across the Pacific back to Sydney. In some parts I have re-visited haunts long ago familiar to me, in other places I have broken fresh ground. On the vexed "Chinese Question" my views have greatly changed during the last four years, and I am not ashamed to say so, setting forth as I do the reasons for that change. I have endeavoured by careful revision to make this work as accurate as possible. Mistakes there may be, but none, I hope, of a flagrant character. I can but vaguely glance at the divine philosophy of Buddha, of whose teachings I am but a humble student. I wish to do every justice to the European in China, as well as to the hard-working coolie, and enterprising, intelligent Chinese gentleman. Book Paradise of the Pacific

Download or read book Paradise of the Pacific written by Herbert H. Gowen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paradise of the Pacific: Sketches of Hawaiian Scenery and Life I should like to tell you how I got into bed beneath the mosquito curtain, an immense bridal-veil sort of thing which effectually screens you, if (and there is much virtue in an if') you can get in without admitting the blood suckers. Unhappily, mosquitoes are like Sunday School children, very skilful at getting in to treats without a ticket, so in the darksomeness of the night, when the light is out and you are in, you may often hear the shrill blare which proclaims your enemy watchful at your pillow, and then - get him out if you can! Oh, sleep! Nature's sweet restorer, balmy sleep, ' in such dire case we may woo thee well and yet in vain. But there is always some drawback everywhere, and after all, mosquitoes, I am told, rarely trouble you for more than a month, after which you become in their eyes a squeezed lemon, or a well drawn dry. Book Rovings in the Pacific From 1837 1849 Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Rovings in the Pacific From 1837 1849 Vol 1 of 2 written by Edward Lucett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-19 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rovings in the Pacific, From 1837-1849, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Glance at California The notes in the following pages have been copied, during the monotony of a protractal voyage, from the original entries, extending, as will be seen, over a series of years. The author has often been without sailing directions, and for the most part without charts, other than general ones of the Pacific; and as the results of his experience might save delay and doubt, to others similarly circumstanced, he has been recommended to submit them to the public. Wherever he could obtain the native names of Islands he has done so; they are spelt after the orthography of dialects in Polynesia; the vowels being accentuated as in France and other Conti neutal nations. The notes have undergone little alteration, addition, or subtraction, and but few rc marks have been interpolated. They are entirely without claim to literary merit but for the sake of easy reference, they have been divided into chapters, and furnished with such mottoes, more or less appli cable to the subject in hand, as the author's memory could supply. The interest which has more recentlyvi preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rovings in the Pacific, From 1837 to 1849, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Glance at California The author's days, it will be seen, have been passed, not in the idealities of life, but in its downright rough realities; and he is not without hope that this simple record of his experience may stimulate many a youth, whose energies are lying dormant for want of a field for their exertion in this densely peopled country, to seek, in the Isles of the Pacific, the home and the adventurous career which he is sure to find there, if he faint not. Should this be the case, the principal end which the author had in view, by publishing these notes, will be fully attained.
