The manner in which this remarkable man " shuffled oFthe mortal coil" was in keeping with his great physical povers, and the hallucination which was the cause of his tragic ending. The recklessness and daring which characterised him through life followed him to the close. To supplement his pension, he got a situation in a distant part of Ireland, where foteen was of the purest spring, and that volatile liquor produced the delusion in his mind that he was a second Hertules. He had often read of that mythical personage's exploits-such as killing the Nemean lion, the Lernean hydra, the clemsing of the Augean stables, the strangling of the serpen'.s, conquering the giants, etc., and in his frenzy he determined to emulate him. He procured an enormous limb of an ashtree, and flourishing it as a club, he proceeded .o a railway track and said he would outdo Hercules in all his feats, by stopping the engine and train with one blow. Taking his place on the middle of the track, he put a bottle of poteen to his mouth when the train came in sight, and, apostrophising the approaching engine, said, "Here's -er health and song, ma'am, an' if ye don't pull up I'll make smithereens of ye with my club, for I am Hercules the second," flourishing the limb of the ash-tree. The engine-driver, leaning over the side of the engine, his face pale as a sheet and his eyes starting from their sockets with horror, gesticulated wildly to no use, while he let off the engine's loudest whistle and scream. Book excerpt: Shows how mid-Victorian efforts to gather information about the Fenians laid the foundation for later British domestic intelligence in both Ireland and mainland Britain. British Intelligence and the Fenians provides the first narrative account of the sustained and systematic use of espionage and secret policing in response to Fenianism between 1855 and 1880. It shows that despite the absence of a formal separate political police force or permanent intelligence agency, the British administration in Ireland created a sophisticated intelligence network to combat the revolutionary threat posed by the Fenian Brotherhood in America and the Irish Republican Brotherhood in Britain. The hub of this intelligence network was the Irish administration's "F. Department", which analysed thousands of reports about Fenianism from throughout Great Britain, North America, and continental Europe. Authorities also established a corresponding "separate and secret organization" in London. Such arrangement provided both Irish and English officials ready access to shared intelligence about Fenianism until the end of the 1870s. However, government's agents never managed to infiltrate the leadership of the Fenian organization in Ireland. Such failure left Ireland's rulers uncertain about Fenian intentions and prone to resort to extra-legal measures in response to perceived threats. The book makes an invaluable contribution to our understanding of early political policing and espionage in Britain. By examining in detail what information was collected, how it was analysed and disseminated, and the use policy makers made of it, it more generally offers an interpretation of the role of intelligence in governing Ireland.
