Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of the Goorka War in India: In the Years 1814, 1815, 1816 A native soldier, of whatever rank, has no heroism, and he is ignorant of honour in every acceptation of the word. Without owing na tural allegiance, or having any incentive to serve os, less ignoble than his pay, he is in our hands no better thana living machine. What the men do not possess within themselves must be communicated by the officers: and to effect this important object an addition of Europeans to the native regiments is indispensable. We may consider an army as divided into two portions, the intellectual and the physical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Sketches of Ceylon and India

Download or read book Sketches of Ceylon and India written by Narayan Prasad and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sketches of Ceylon and India: From the Travel Notes of a Russian is the English translation, a long-felt desideratum, of the report originally written in Russian and published in 1878 by Professor Ivan Minayev on his first trip to Ceylon, India and Nepal in 1874-75. Of the three foreign trips, the first trip of Ivan Minayev to the East is particularly interesting for Orientalists. This trip was important both for the scholar himself and for the development of Indology as a whole. This report contains not only detailed information on archaeological discoveries and description of architectural and historical monuments but a spate of interesting observations and conclusions related to the daily life of the peoples inhabiting these countries. Minayev’s personal pieces of evidence of those distant times, based on the stable academic foundation, unlike various contemporary travelogues that abound in distorted judgments and biased observations, are indeed very rare and hence one cannot overestimate their value.

Book excerpt: WHEN BRITON FOUGHT GURKHA No-one who has an interest in British military history is ignorant of the role of the Gurkhas. Their loyalty and courage is as legendary as the affection with which they are regarded by the British military and civilians alike. It was not always so. At the beginning of the 19th century, as the British empire inexorably expanded its inflfl uence to embrace the Indian Sub-Continent, the Nepalese empire itself covered huge areas of Northern India - stretching at times from the borders of the Sikh kingdom in the west to the foothills of the Himalayas where they meet the Bay of Bengal. When these two empires clashed, the British certainly experienced an unpleasant surprise. For they confronted warriors of astonishing bravery, gallantry and ferocity, with no mean grasp of tactics. So began a hard-fought, touch-and-go war between enemies who would one day be inseparable friends. This is the story of that war!

Book Nepal and the Geo Strategic Rivalry between China and India

Download or read book Nepal and the Geo Strategic Rivalry between China and India written by Sanjay Upadhya and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-02-27 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of the Himalayan state of Nepal has been obscured by the international campaign to free Tibet and the vicissitudes of the Sino-Indian rivalry. This book presents the history of Nepal’s domestic politics and foreign relations from ancient to modern times. Analysing newly declassified reports from the United States and Britain, published memoirs, oral recollections and interviews, the book presents the historical interactions between Nepal, China, Tibet and India. It discusses how the ageing and inevitable death of the 14th Dalai Lama, the radicalization of Tibetan diaspora and the ascendancy of the international campaign to free Tibet are of increasing importance to Nepal. With its position between China and India, the book notes how the focus could shift to Nepal, with it being home to some 20,000 Tibetan refugees and its chronic political turmoil, deepened by the Asian giants’ rivalry. Using a chronological approach, the past and present of the rivalry between China and India are studied, and attempts to chart the future are made. The book contributes to a new understanding of the intricate relationship of Nepal with these neighbouring countries, and is of interest to students and scholars of South Asian studies, politics and international relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memory, while seemingly a thing of the past, has much to reveal in the present. With its focus on memory, War and Remembrance provides new viewpoints in the field of war representation. Bringing an interdisciplinary approach to discussions of the cultural memory of war, the collection focuses on narratives, either fictional or testimonial, that challenge ideological discourses of war. The acts of remembrance and of waging war are constantly evolving. A range of case studies – analyzing representations of war in art, film, museums, and literature from Nigeria, Australia, Sri Lanka, Canada, and beyond – questions our current approaches to memory studies while offering reinterpretations of established narratives. Throughout, a commitment to Indigenous perspectives, to examining the ongoing legacy of colonialism, and to a continued reckoning with the Second World War foregrounds what is often forgotten in the writing of a single, official history. War and Remembrance invites readers to cast a reflexive look at wars and conflicts past – some of them forgotten, others still vividly commemorated – the better to understand the cultural, political, and social stake of memory as a source of conflict and exchange, of resistance and opposition, and of negotiation and reconciliation.
