This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Amherst College During Its First Half Century, 1821-1871 This History was a part of the plan for the Semi-Centennial Celebration, and was at first intended to be in readiness for that occasion. The action of the Alumni and of the Trustees on the subject is narrated at the opening of the chapter touching the Jubilee, and may be found at page 595. The failure of the author's health rendered it necessary for him to defer the work for some time, and seek recuperation; and although by rest, with change of scene, this object was at length successfully accomplished, yet between the necessity of carefully guarding what was thus gained, and the daily occupation of College duties, he has been able to devote only a short time, two or three hours a day at most, to this extra labor. After the work of preparation was substantially done, unexpected delays, which need not be detailed, arose in regard to the publication. Prepared at the request of the Alumni and dedicated to them, the History has been written with constant reference to them as its most sympathizing and probably most numerous readers. Some of the best parts of it have been contributed by the Alumni themselves. A circular was sent to each Alumnus, at the outset, requesting him to "photograph for the author's use the College as it was in his day, his own class, any individual whether officer or student, any scene or event as it appeared to his eye." Book A History of Amherst College

Download or read book A History of Amherst College written by William S. Tyler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Amherst College: During the Administrations of Its First Five Presidents, From 1821 to 1891 The first edition of this history appeared shortly after the celebration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the college, and was entitled "History of Amherst College during its First Half Century, 1821-1871." The present new edition has been written and revised with particular reference to two objects, viz: first, the continuation of the history so as to include the close of Dr. Stearns' presidency and the entire administration of President Seelye, thus making it a history of Amherst under its first five presidents; and second, at the same time to abridge the work and make it a smaller and less costly volume, which should be within the means of every graduate. In thus abridging it, I have been under the necessity of omitting the biographical sketches of the founders and benefactors, the trustees and faculty, and the personal contributions of alumni of the college, which were a characteristic feature of the first edition and gave it variety, lifelike reality, and dramatic interest. But whatever it may have thus lost in variety and individuality, we trust it has gained in fulness and completeness as a history of the college. My first thought was to write a separate book on the religious history of the college. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address Delivered Before the Students of Amherst College, and the Citizens of the Town, in the First Church in Amherst, Nov. 17, 1852 Should commemorate his greatness, and speak his praise. It is meet that as citizens and students, we should join in this. We cannot for get that he whom we mourn was himself a student - himself like many of you whom I now address, the son of parents not blessed with much worldly substance, and compelled therefore like many of us, to struggle on through College at the hardest. That early disci pline and training he never forgot, never ceased to feel a lively inter est in, and sympathy with, the College student. Have we not a right then not only as citizens, but as students, to mingle our poor tribute of respect, on this occasion, with the general tribute and the general grief. Book Sabrina the Class Goddess of Amherst College

Download or read book Sabrina the Class Goddess of Amherst College written by Max Shoop and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sabrina, the Class Goddess of Amherst College: A History We will choose, to look through, the eyes of a man, a business man say, who is looking into college from the outside, and who himself has never been to college. His sons are there, getting an experience which has been denied him. From time to time come echoes of how they fare, such reports as reach him through the newspapers. What are his hopeful wards doing all this time? If his exacting business cares allow him an occasional thought of them, it surely must be not unlike the thought that came to Byron's gladiator, There are his young barbarians all at play. The newspapers do not report much more. The scores of football and baseball and tennis and track hll the page and make exciting news; he sees his boys' pictures in padded clothes or in thin drawers clearlynot meant for the costume of the class-room. About the class-room itself, and the library, and the laboratory, he may search in vain for reports of achievement or prog ress; such things do not make sensational items for the crowd. Even the sons themselves, home on their vacation, one suspects, are not eloquent about their college routine, or they pass it off with hints of the bluffs and tricks by which the routine is enlivened. What are they doing to become scholars, or get ready for the coming toil and moi] of business? Clearly, if the outsider depends on the papers for his information, college is a holiday, a place for high jinks and play. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Record of the Alumni of Amherst College, During Its First Half Century: 1821 1871 In the Preface to the History of Amherst College, which was published in 1873, it was announced that at my instance and the request of the Faculty Professors Crowell and Montague had commenced the collection of materials for a History of the Graduates of the College, which would be given to the public as soon as it could be prepared. After the lapse of ten years that promise is now ful filled, though not without some change of plan and of hands in the execution of the work, which will be explained in the Preface. Meanwhile Professor Montague has prepared and printed, with great labor and painstaking, a Record of the non-graduate Members of Amherst College from 1821 to 1871. These three works, the His tory of the College, the Record of its Alumni, and the Record of its non-graduates, together with the Exercises at the semi-centennial, and Student Life at Amherst, all clustering about the semi-genten nial, make up a pretty complete picture, or series of pictures, of Amherst College during the first half century of its existence. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of Amherst College Library The Library of Amherst College was commenced in 1821, the same year that the College went into operation. It however numbered very few books pre vious to 1832, in which year, about two thousmd standard works in litera ture and science were purchased in London and Paris, by Professor Hovey, with money raised by general subscription among the friends of the College. From that time the Library gradually increased to 1850, when it num bered about six thousand volumes. During that year, the room in the Chapel devoted to the Library having become too small to accommodate the books, a subscription was started for the purpose of procuring funds for the erection of a new library building, and the purchase of such books as the necessities of both Officers and Students seemed imperatively to demand. With the twenty thous dollars realized from this subscription, a new li braty building was erected in 1853, and such additions made to the Library, that, with other donations, the number of volumes which it now contains, varies not far from twelve thousand.
