Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketch of the Second Church in Boston To such of the friends of the writer as may chance to read this little book, he desires to say, its materials were collected and arranged in manuscript form several years ago merely for the information of his own family and to answer the casual inquiries of others, but with no thought of its ever being printed. When, however, it was submitted to a few friends for their critical judgment of its statements, they advised its publication upon the ground that a need existed for such information as it contained. After considerable hesitation he has consented to publish it in the hope that, notwithstanding its imperfections, it may in some degree meet that need and thereby prove the wisdom of his advisors. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketch of the Congregational Churches in Massachusetts: From 1620 to 1858 The author is under great obligations to those ministers and laymen in various parts of the State who have kindly furnished him the correct names and dates, which he had either omitted or erroneously stated in the newspaper articles which fell under their eye. Especially deserving of grateful acknowledgments are the favors received from J. Wingate thornton, Esq., and Dr. J. B. Felt, of Boston, in the loan of rare books and manuscripts. But it is to the collections of the Congregational Library Association that he is most deeply indebted for aid in preparing this sketch. Probably there is no place in New Englandjvhere statistical information -particularly such as relates to the Congregational churches - can be found in equal fulness for, in addition to its own appropriate store, it has also, on deposit, the entire library of the American Statistical Society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phillips Brooks: The United Service of the Churches of Boston at the Old South Meeting-House, Boston, January 30, 1893 So soon as the announcement was made of the death of Phillips Brooks, a general desire was felt that a meeting of the clergy of all communions might be held, to express their sense of his worth and their grief at parting from one who is remembered so fondly as a personal friend. The arrangements for this meeting were made that it might be held on Monday, the 30th of January, at the Old South Meeting-House. The proprietors of the Old South Meeting-House gladly opened it for this purpose. For such purposes, or in the wish to have a central place in which the common thought and common purpose of Boston may express itself, has this venerable meetinghouse been preserved. The committee are glad to publish the addresses made on this occasion in affectionate memory of one whose voice has so often been heard on occasions of public interest in this house, dedicated to all the best interests of the town of Boston. Book The Catholic Churches of Boston and Its Vicinity and St John s Seminary Brighton Mass

Download or read book The Catholic Churches of Boston and Its Vicinity and St John s Seminary Brighton Mass written by William Augustine Leahy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Churches of Boston and Its Vicinity and St. John's Seminary, Brighton, Mass: A Folio of Photo-Gravures With Notes and Historical Information The greater number of our builders of churches have been true, in their selection of architecture, to the traditional Gothic style, which it may be said admits of more variety than almost any other. It serves to remind us also, here in the New World, of those sublime monuments of the ages of faith, when the human spirit in its expansion could feel at home only in presence of vast dimensions, governed to true proportions and relieved with profuse variety of detail by the artistic intelligence which prevailed in the mediaeval world. Yet not all our churches have the spire and the peaked arch of the Gothic. The Immaculate Conception Church, Grecian in its general effect, though without the Grecian porticoes, may be counted as one of the most admirable among them; and in some of the newer Churches, as the Redemptorist Church and St. Cecilia's, there are successful departures in the direction of Romanesque and Norman types. By courageous experiment the time may come when there shall be a style of Church Architecture which may properly be called American. Book History of the First Church in Boston

Download or read book History of the First Church in Boston written by Arthur B. Ellis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the First Church in Boston: 1630-1880 The extent to which I have relied on my uncle, Dr. George E. Ellis, for advice and guidance, can hardly be overestimated. It is sufficient to say that he has directed and supervised it all from beginning to end. To my father, the present minister of the church, may be attributed an equal share with my uncle, of the labor involved in preparing the volume for the press, a work which was nearly completed during my absence abroad. In the preparation of the later chapters, I was guided and governed to a great extent by his advice. I tender my grateful acknowledgments to Mrs. George W. Pratt, of Boston, for valuable aid in preparing the sketch of her ancestor, Thomas Bridge. My thanks are due to Rev. Henry W. Foote, minister of King's Chapel, and author of a new history of that church, which he is now preparing for the press, for calling my attention to some interesting sermons of Foxcroft and for other acts of kindness; and to Mr. John Ward Dean, librarian of the New England Historic Genealogical Soci ety, for kindly assisting me to fix the exact location of the first parsonage on Devonshire Street.
