Book Sketches of Natural History

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Natural History: Or Songs of Animal Life Her Sketches of Natural History have long enjoyed a wide and well-deserved popularity. Seldom have the habits and manners of animals, with glimpses of rural life, and suggestions of picturesque land scapes, been brought before the young in a more attractive manner. And indeed, Mrs. Howitt being a poetess of no mean order, the following pages may be read with interest and pleasure by children of a larger growth than those for whom they were primarily intended. They are characterized by an infinite variety and Mrs. Howitt seems equally at home when singing of the Stormy Petrel or the Lion, or when describing in sportive verse the gambols of the Monkey or the vagaries of the Carolina Parrot. She ranges at will from grave to gay, from lively to severe, and invariably carries her reader with her. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Throughout his life photographer Jim Naughten has been fascinated with the natural world. As a child, he collected fossils he found near his home in Dover. Now a renowned photographer, Naughten has started to experiment with stereography and has turned to his boyhood interest, gaining access to the archives of some of the world's most prestigious natural history museums. This gorgeously produced book contains fifty images of marine life, reptiles, mammals, birds and primates photographed expressly for viewing through a stereoscope, which is included with the book. Stereoscopy was invented in 1839 to study and explain binocular vision. Having two eyes allows humans to determine distance and depth and stereoscopy shows a left- and right-eye view from a slightly different angle, as we see things in day-to-day life. Looking through the stereo viewer, readers will see the specimens as three-dimensional objects. As the images jump off the page, their incredible details become apparent-delicate bat wings, the spiraling skeleton of a python, the almost mythic form of a leafy sea dragon.A foreword by Martin Barnes of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London offers an assessment of the work while essays on the specimens themselves and the history of stereoscopy provide rich background to this photographic technology, and to Naughten's achievement in bringing to life a world that seamlessly melds the past and present.

Book Sketches of Animal Life and Habits Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sketches of Animal Life and Habits Classic Reprint written by Andrew Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Animal Life and Habits The present series of Sketches has been compiled with the view of affording general readers, and especially the young, some popular and yet trustworthy ideas regarding some of the most interesting groups of the animal world. The work may in fact be regarded as a natural history text-book adapted for use in Nature's school at large, and as a guide to the use of the observant powers, through the due exer cise of which all true ideas of Nature are acquired. Some of the Sketches have already appeared in Chambers's Journal, and are reprinted here with some additions, and with such alterations as were found to be necessary in adapting them for volume-form. The papers lay no claim to originality; but the day of grave errors in popular scien tific works is not yet past, and the author would fain hope that the Sketches may at least be found to possess the merit of correctness. The highest purpose this little work may serve is, that of fostering a love for the personal and direct observation of Nature. Knowledge so acquired invariably brings its own reward in the power it confers of discerning higher aspects in all the workes of Nature.' And as a result of such studies, we may say with Wordsworth of the most commonplace object around. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Women Poets in the Victorian Era

Download or read book Women Poets in the Victorian Era written by Fabienne Moine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the place of nature in Victorian women's poetry, Fabienne Moine explores the work of canonical and long-neglected women poets to show the myriad connections between women and nature during the period. At the same time, she challenges essentialist discourses that assume innate affinities between women and the natural world. Rather, Moine shows, Victorian women poets mobilised these alliances to defend common interests and express their engagement with social issues. While well-known poets such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti are well-represented in Moine's study, she pays particular attention to lesser known writers such as Mary Howitt or Eliza Cook who were popular during their lifetimes or Edith Nesbit, whose verse has received scant critical attention so far. She also brings to the fore the poetry of many non-professional poets. Looking to their immediate cultural environments for inspiration, these women reconstructed the natural world in poems that raise questions about the validity and the scope of representations of nature, ultimately questioning or undermining social practices that mould and often fossilise cultural identities.
