Book An Introduction to Anthropology

Download or read book An Introduction to Anthropology written by E. O. James and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Anthropology: A General Survey of the Early History of the Human Race In recent years the progress of scientific research in the department of prehistoric archaeology has been such that there seems to be room for a small volume setting forth the results arrived at by archaeologists in terms that can be understood by ordinary intelligent readers. The books hitherto published on the subject have been confined for the most part to special aspects of early culture, and, therefore, are not intended to cover the whole field of the life of man before history i.e., the era prior to written records). In the selection of subject matter, it has been the purpose of the author to give a resume of the conclusions arrived at by specialists in their several departments, in such a manner as to present a consecutive account of the early history of the human race. References are given in footnotes to enable the serious student to investigate the evidence for himself, and frame his own conclusions. Book The Antiquity of Man annotated

Download or read book The Antiquity of Man annotated written by Charles Lyell and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-11 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Antiquity of Man" was published in 1863, and ran into a third edition in the course of that year. The cause of this is not far to seek. Darwin's "Origin of Species" appeared in 1859, only four years earlier, and rapidly had its effect in drawing attention to the great problem of the origin of living beings. The theories of Darwin and Wallace brought to a head and presented in a concrete shape the somewhat vague speculations as to development and evolution which had long been floating in the minds of naturalists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the concept of “deep time” began as a metaphor used by philosophers, poets, and naturalists in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries In this interdisciplinary book, Noah Heringman argues that the concept of “deep time”—most often associated with geological epochs—began as a metaphorical language used by philosophers, poets, and naturalists of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to explore the origins of life beyond the written record. Their ideas about “the abyss of time” created a way to think about the prehistoric before it was possible to assign dates to the fossil record. Heringman, examining stories about the deep past by visionary thinkers ranging from William Blake to Charles Darwin, challenges the conventional wisdom that the idea of deep time came forth fully formed from the modern science of geology. Instead, he argues, it has a rich imaginative history. Heringman considers Johann Reinhold Forster and Georg Forster, naturalists on James Cook’s second voyage around the world, who, inspired by encounters with Pacific islanders, connected the scale of geological time to human origins and cultural evolution; Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, who drew on travel narrative, antiquarian works, and his own fieldwork to lay out the first modern geological timescale; Blake and Johann Gottfried Herder, who used the language of fossils and artifacts to promote ancient ballads and “prehistoric song”; and Darwin’s exploration of the reciprocal effects of geological and human time. Deep time, Heringman shows, has figural and imaginative dimensions beyond its geological meaning.

Book The Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man

Download or read book The Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man written by Charles Lyell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man: With Remarks on Theories of the Origin of Species by Variation Preliminary Remarks on the Subjects Treated of in This Work - Definition of the Terms Recent, Post-Pliocene, and Post-Tertiary - Tabular View of the Entire Series of Fossiliferous Strata. No subject has lately excited more curiosity and general interest among geologists and the public than the question of the Antiquity of the Human Race, - whether or no we have sufficient evidence in caves, or in the superficial deposits commonly called drift or 'diluvium,' to prove the former co-existence of man with certain extinct mammalia. For the last half-century, the occasional occurrence, in various parts of Europe, of the bones of man or the works of his hands, in cave-breccias and stalactites, associated with the remains of the extinct hyæna, bear, elephant, or rhinoceros, has given rise to a suspicion that the date of man must be carried further back than we had heretofore imagined. Download or read book The Hidden History of the Human Race written by Michael A. Cremo and published by Govardhan Hill Publishing. This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two centuries, researchers have been finding bones and artifacts indicating that humans existed on earth millions of years ago. Mainstream science has acted as what Cremo and Thompson call a "knowledge filter" to suppress these facts that stubbornly refuse to jibe with accepted archeological theory. The authors have divided their material into two parts: Accepted Evidence and I Anomalous Evidence, systematically reviewing the data for everything from Java man and the Pilt-down hoax to anomalous human skeletal remains and indications of ancient, advanced cultures. Compelling and controversial!

Book A Cultural History of Race in Antiquity

Download or read book A Cultural History of Race in Antiquity written by Denise Eileen McCoskey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era generally referred to as antiquity lasted for thousands of years and was characterized by a diverse range of peoples and cultural systems. This volume explores some of the specific ways race was defined and mobilized by different groups-including the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Persians, and Ethiopians- as they came into contact with one another during this period. Key to this inquiry is the examination of institutions, such as religion and politics, and forms of knowledge, such as science, that circumscribed the formation of ancient racial identities and helped determine their meanings and consequences. Drawing on a range of ancient evidence-literature, historical writing, documentary evidence, and ancient art and archaeology-this volume highlights both the complexity of ancient racial ideas and the often violent and asymmetrical power structures embedded in ancient racial representations and practices like war and the enslavement of other persons. The study of race in antiquity has long been clouded by modern assumptions, so this volume also seeks to outline a better method for apprehending race on its own terms in the ancient world, including its relationship to other forms of identity, such as ethnicity and gender, while also seeking to identify and debunk some of the racist methods and biases that have been promulgated by classical historians themselves over the last few centuries.
