Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Colorado Colonel, and Other Sketches Something unusual was evidently taking place on those early-summer days when the soft winds swept like a caress over the prairies and in at the open windows of the Har grave cottage. An old green trunk had been brought from its hiding-place in the attic, and ransacked, repaired, and many times packed and repacked in order that it might go again into the busy world to which it had for many years now been a stranger, a trunk in whose tray was a bundle of letters and dim daguerreotypes daintily tied with a bit of blue ribbon on which were faded spots, tear-stains or time - stains, who knows? - things that were yet very precious to their owner, Rebecca Norwood, (aunt Re becca, she was generally called, ) the maiden aunt of Agnes Hargrave. They were about to go away for the summer, were Agnes and her aunt, and when two women, one of whom is an invalid of uncertain years, make ready for such a journey there is, as Col. Ferguson once said of a fright ful railroad wreck from which he barely escaped with his life, more or less mixed confusion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peak and Prairie: From a Colorado Sketch-Book And suggestions caught from time to time by a single observer in a comparatively narrow field of observation. Narrow as the field is, how ever, it offers a somewhat unusual diversity of scene; for that most charming of health resorts known in these pages as Springtown, is the chance centre of many varying interests. In its immediate vicinity exists the life of the prairie ranch on the one hand and that of the mining-camp on the other while dominating all as it were - town, prairie, and mountain fastness - rises the great Peak which has now for so many years been the goal of pilgrimage to men and women from the Eastern States in pursuit of health, of fortune, or of the free, open air life of the prairie. If, from acquaintance with these fictitious characters set in a very real environment, the reader be led to form. Book excerpt: When one thinks of Spanish Colonial art in the Southwest it is usually of New Mexico and the famous Spanish Market of Santa Fe. But New Mexico isn't the only home of Spanish Colonial art and artists in the Southwest. Colorado also has an equally long tradition of these arts. In fact, the only reason we know less about them than those of New Mexico is because of a historical accident-a change of borders. Up until 1861, when the Colorado Territory was established, what is now southern Colorado up to the Arkansas River was actually the New Mexico Territory, and its arts and artists were one and the same. And yet, owing to this change of borders, the Spanish Colonial arts and artists of the modern state of Colorado have not received the same attention as those of New Mexico. To remedy this situation, artist and scholar, Netanel Miles-Yépez, set out to document the life and work of Colorado based santera ('saint-maker'), Teresa May Duran, a native Coloradan who has continued the traditional Spanish Colonial art of retablo making as practiced in the old New Mexico Territory, questioning her about her personal history and training, as well as her methods and subjects. In this work, we are a given a rare glimpse into the motivations and actual techniques of a traditional Spanish Colonial retablo maker of the American SouthwestTeresa Duran is a fifth generation Coloradoan, whose family can be traced to the early settlements of New Mexico. Her work as a santera has shown in various museums, universities, churches and galleries. Her artwork was selected to market the 1994 and 2011 "Chili Harvest Festival" in Denver, Colorado, and the 1997 and 2014, "Colorado Santeros" exhibit at Regis University. She has also won several awards for her retablos through the Tesoro Cultural Center. In 2010, Teresa was juried into the Spanish Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her artwork may be seen at teresamayduran.com.

Book Sketches of Colorado Vol 1 of 4

Download or read book Sketches of Colorado Vol 1 of 4 written by William Columbus Ferril and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Colorado, Vol. 1 of 4: Being an Analytical Summary and Biographical History of the State of Colorado, as Portrayed in the Lives of the Pioneers and the Prominent and Progressive Citizens Who Helped in the Development and History Making of Colorado Strict adherence has been had in the publication of this work, to its primary purpose, namely, the production of an analytical summary, and biographical history of Colorado. The history will be found to be more complete than any previous history so far published and, to better conserve the purpose for which it has been prepared, it has been written in narrative form. In every feature of the book, accuracy, above all things else, has been striven for. In the biographical sketches much historical data naturally appears. These biographies have not been prepared with a view to praising nor of inflicting adulation upon the subjects thereof, but have been written in as concise and concrete form as was possible, and accuracy of detail has been the key note. It is not claimed for this history that every detail in Colorado's up-building has been covered therein, but all the leading events and salient points relative to the progress of the state are presented. With regard to the first chapters of the history, treating of the period before the advent of man, the deductions therein contained have been arrived at by applying scientific principles to that which has been previously treated with in history, and the result thereof is set forth as an entertaining story. All of the facts which pertain to the periods from and after the explorer's advent are authenticated and succinctly stated in chronological order.
