Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Church Life: In the Counties of Essex and Hertfordshire Forming the Diocese of St. Albans The idea of undertaking to write these Sketches of the Diocesan History of St. Albans suggested itself to me during the compilation of a Chart, showing the various changes by which the diocese has been built up. Finding so many notes of interest in the lives of the Bishops, it occurred to me that the great movements with which they were identified might be illustrated by incidents of local Church life. It is hoped that a narration of some of the leading features of the parts which the two counties now constituting the diocese took in the building up of the story of the Church, may induce a more thorough study of Church History in general, together with its development in our shires. It has been asserted that St. Albans, as a diocese, is too young to have a history, but it has attained its majority, and the story of twenty-five years of vigorous life would in itself entitle it to claim a place in the library of diocesan literature. The wealthy worshippers of St. Mary's, Chelmsford lost a bitter battle to retain private pews but won another against six rivals to become the cathedral. Forty years of war and austerity saw plans for a new building shelved. New churches in East London came first. Worshippers wanted to keep the Diocese at arm's length. No one knew what a cathedral was for. Even looking and sounding good proved difficult. Eventually visionary leadership gave Chelmsford Cathedral an identity as servant and not just ornament of the Diocese.
