Book The Ethics of Literary Art

Download or read book The Ethics of Literary Art written by Maurice Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of Literary Art: The Carew Lectures for 1893 Hartford Theological Seminary The matter of the following pages was delivered in three lectures, and it will not be hard for the reader to find the lines of division. A different plan might have been followed had my purpose originally been a book. Still I have not felt it necessary to recast any part of the work, and in arbitrarily dividing my discussion into three parts, it came easy to make Conception, Composition, and Expression stand, in the order named, as themes for successive treatment. No careful reader will need to be told that my aim has been at suggestion, and that I have not hesitated to sacrifice the graces of diction in order to say with fewest words what might have been turned to excellent account in the way of mere literature. My subject covers the whole field of morals for life and literature cannot be separated so as to say that what is vicious in life is harmlessly delectable in literature. We live life to enjoy it; we make and read literature to enjoy it. In either case enjoyment is not necessarily a light matter. Book Images of Redemption

Download or read book Images of Redemption written by Patrick Sherry and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After discussing the "arts of redemption" and their rivals, and introducing soteriology, the theology of salvation, Patrick Sherry argues that the Christian "Drama of Redemption" has three Acts. The next five chapters discuss the three Acts, namely salvation history, our present human life, and the life to come. In each case, Sherry explains how art and literature can lead to an understanding of what is at stake here. His main concern is with the present life: hence three of those chapters deal with that phase of redemption, one of them specifically with "novels of redemption." The last substantial chapter of the book takes up the general issue of how art and literature contribute to religious understanding: Sherry argues that they may be primary expressions of religious belief, as well as "illustrations," and that as such they may criticise or complement theology, or in turn be open to criticism themselves from that quarter. Finally, he summarises the main theme and briefly discusses some of the particular problems of assessing the arts of redemption. The book's most distinctive feature is the way in which it uses art and literature as a means of religious and theological understanding. It is not a survey of the arts of redemption, though it uses a wide variety of examples, including ancient Greek drama, Flemish and Italian painting, religious music, and 19th -20th century novels. These examples are used as a tool for understanding what is one of the most difficult areas of theology.

In short, it elicits emotion--just like poetry. By learning to read and love poetry, says literature professor Matthew Mullins, readers can increase their understanding of the biblical text and learn to love God's Word more. Each chapter includes exercises and questions designed to help readers put the book's principles and practices into action.
