In no place are these changes so noticeable as in the hunting field, where to-day we find women in large numbers who can hold their own across country with the best of the men, asking for nothing better than to share the sport and the risks Without favour. It is so many years since any book has been written dealing with all the matters I have embraced in this volume, on which I am so constantly asked to give advice, that I decided to write chapters on all the most important points. The possessors of these - I may say gifts - live and are formed for excitement. If not satiated in one way, and that an innocent, manly, and useful one, your boys may take to the gaming-table, or to an excess of feasting, rioting, or debauchery. Excitement they must have or die. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Big Game Fields of America, North and South: Illustrated From Photographs by the Author and Three Drawings by Charles Livingston Bull What I have actually seen of wildlife during a good many big game hunting trips in North and South America, from Alaska to the equator, is the theme of this book. Most of the ac counts were penciled in the shooting tent or even on moonlit nights while awaiting some night prowler. In two chapters I have attempted to give with some exactitude the natural history of the black bear and the jaguar, the two animals which in captivity and the open I have most carefully studied, but in general my obj ect is to present as clearly as possible the human side of the sport the greatest Sport in the world. If it proves that I am successful in taking my reader with me, through mountains and jungle, and if I make of the reader a convert to the life of the open, I shall be glad, for I know of noth ing that gives so much and asks so little as nature. Book Hunting Sketches

  • Release : 2020-10-11
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 53 pages

Download or read book Hunting Sketches written by Anthony Trollope and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-11 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They are easily recognized by any one who cares to scrutinize the men around him in the hunting field. It is not to be supposed that all those who, in common parlance, do not ride, are to be included among the number of hunting men who don't like it. Many a man who sticks constantly to the roads and lines of gates, who, from principle, never looks at a fence, is much attached to hunting. Some of those who have borne great names as Nimrods in our hunting annals would as life have led a forlorn- hope as put a horse at a flight of hurdles. But they, too, are known; and though the nature of their delight is a mystery to straight-going men, it is manifest enough, that they do like it. Their theory of hunting is at any rate plain. They have an acknowledged system, and know what they are doing. But the men who don't like it, have no system, and never know distinctly what is their own aim.
