Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches in Carbery, County Cork: Its Antiquities, History, Legends, and Topography They are more or less of a superficial character, skimming over the surface, and wanting perhaps in the statistics and practical details which charac terize the hand-books of a country or locality. They treat in a rambling manner, as the' name would imply (a sort of Olla Podrida), of the local history, legendary lore, antiquities, and topography of various interesting places throughout the extensive baronies of Carbery, county Cork. Book Mary Carbery s West Cork Journal 1898 1901 Or From the Back of Beyond

Download or read book Mary Carbery s West Cork Journal 1898 1901 Or From the Back of Beyond written by Mary Carbery and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After her husband, the ninth Lord of Carbery, died at an early age, Mary Carbery, recently arrived from England, was left the solitary mistress of the vast neo-medieval Castle Freke. These journals trace Mary's growing attachment to a wild, alien countryside and its people. Set on a remote headland in West Cork, the journals chronicle the last days of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy when the Carberys of Castle Freke and others such as their neighbours, Somerville and Ross, seemed secure in their position, little knowing the changes the next century would bring. The story concentrates on the Carberys' poorer neighbours and tenants, the descriptions of which are made through sketches of local characters and customs, folklore and fairytales, trades and traditions.

Book Growing with America Colonial Roots

Download or read book Growing with America Colonial Roots written by Joseph Fox and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-11-04 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Fox ancestry was covered in my earlier book, Growing with America: The Fox Family of Philadelphia. Now we turn to Ruth Martins side of the family. She had colonial ancestors in New England, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia with names such as Alden, Wolcott, Lay, Carbery, Hite, Manning, Blair, Warfield, Dorsey, and Neale. They all converged on our nations capital when it was first being built. Rather than repeat what others have done, this book attempts to bring many of these ancestors to life by examining, in some detail, their timeline and life circumstances. A personal letter, a detail in a will, or even some good DNA detective work can move that curtain hiding a vista of the past. I wanted to try to understand the challenges these people were facing, so different from today but still the same human responses at play. I have not hesitated to speculate as long as this is truly identified as speculation. It became evident that there were a number of overriding themes I wanted to cover: (1) the convergence of many diverse traditions and religions, (2) some personal stories that interested me, including some memoirs never before published, (3) discoveries resulting from genetic testing, (4) the familys interaction with slavery and the Civil War, and (5) recognition of earlier family research, setting the record straight where necessary. With the advent of full genome testing, it became possible to trace relationships in all branches of the familynot just the Fox male line or the all-female line. While quite haphazard in going back this far, this did tend to confirm what the books said about mothers family. Most significantly, however, it led to contacts with a few very knowledgeable people and to some fascinating new speculations. In a way, this is a sequel to the earlier book since more Fox family information has been uncovered both via genetic testing and by personal contact.

Download or read book The Stolen Village written by Des Ekin and published by The O'Brien Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1631 pirates from Algiers and armed troops of the Turkish Ottoman Empire, led by the notorious pirate captain Morat Rais, stormed ashore at the little harbour village of Baltimore in West Cork. They captured almost all the villagers and bore them away to a life of slavery in North Africa. The prisoners were destined for a variety of fates -- some would live out their days chained to the oars as galley slaves, while others would spend long years in the scented seclusion of the harem or within the walls of the Sultan's palace. The old city of Algiers, with its narrow streets, intense heat and lively trade, was a melting pot where the villagers would join slaves and freemen of many nationalities. Only two of them ever saw Ireland again. The Sack of Baltimore was the most devastating invasion ever mounted by Islamist forces on Ireland or England. Des Ekin's exhaustive research illuminates the political intrigues that ensured the captives were left to their fate, and provides a vivid insight into the kind of life that would have awaited the slaves amid the souks and seraglios of old Algiers. The Stolen Village is a fascinating tale of international piracy and culture clash nearly 400 years ago and is the first book to cover this relatively unknown and under-researched incident in Irish history.
