Book Sketches Vol 6 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sketches Vol 6 Classic Reprint written by Dom Pedro and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-09 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches, Vol. 6 HE object of these sketches is from a desire to introduce a new feature of literary endeavor to the public, whose ample shoulders are already overburdened with stacks of works from the voluminous pens of amateur authors. Praying that this little work may not be the last straw to crush the exhausted public. It is therefore launched upon the sea of public opinion, hoping its frail bark may not be wamped by the breakers of unfair criticism, or the want of criticism. The incidents connected with these sketches are facts not in the least overdrawn. The aim is not alone to amuse at the expense of eccentric characters, but to point out the moral defects of the customs and institutions of the community in which we live - from no worse' motives on( the part of the author than patriotism, humanity, and the progress of enlightenment. So I fling myself into the maelstrom of popular demand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Sketches of Life and Character Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sketches of Life and Character Classic Reprint written by T. S. Arthur and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of Life and Character In offering this volume to the public, the author believes that he is put ting forth a book that all may read with profit, as well as with some degree of interest. In drawing pictures of life, he has, in no instance, knowingly exaggerated the truth in order to produce effect or startle the minds of his readers. He has endeavored to give nature as it is: and in exhibiting the evils, errors and weaknesses of humanity, has only done so in order to lead the mind to good. In the way he has chosen he is aware that the fame of a high literary excellence does not await him; that he will not be much es teemed by those who regard either startling e 'ect, brilliancy, or artistic beauty, as the chief merit in an author. But, as he has never aimed at acquiring a reputation; nor sought to be known and admired as a writer, this idea brings no very unpleasant feeling. Authorship, as a profession, was not a matter of choice on his part. He wrote, at first, because it was a pleasure to write, and, afterwards, because circumstances made it necessary. His choice of subjects was from those that lay all around him in common life. He had but to open his eyes and see, and then to take up his pen and write of what he saw. From his own experience he has drawn largely, and much of the power he possesses lies in the fact that he has himself erred in judgment, committed mistakes in the ordinary affairs of life, given way to weaknesses of character, and suffered much from these causes. When a man feels, he speaks more earnestly, and, in writing, gives truer pictures of nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches Old and New My Dear Sir: - Ever since I received the proof of your great skill, in connection with your skilful associates, in testing rapid transmission of despatches by the Morse Telegraph System, I have been desirous of manifesting to you, and also to N.J. Snyder, Esq., of Philadelphia, some token of my gratification on your accomplishment of feats which, so far as I know, are unexampled in the annals of telegraphy. Please, therefore, accept from me. on this, the 78th anniversary of my birth, the accompanying gold pencil case and pen, as a very slight and indeed inadequate expression of my admiration of your masterly performance of recording 2,731 words in one hour; a feat which I have not failed to put on record in my report to the Department of State on the telegraph apparatus of the Paris Exposition of 1867. The necessity for exclusive attention in preparing the above-mentioned report has prevented an earlier recognition of your skill. My thanks are also due to all concerned in the satisfactory result of the test of speedy transmission. While your associates deserve high praise for their rare dexterity in manipulation, you and Mr. Snyder, I think, deserve the highest praise for the admirable and indeed built less manner of recording that which was so ably transmitted. Accept, also, the assurance of my sincere respect and esteem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charcoal Sketches Still, however, this is a world of violent contrasts, and of painful incongruities. Some of us may laugh; but while we laugh, let us be assured of it that there are others who are weeping. It is pleasant all about you here, within your brief horizon, but the distance may be short to scenes most sadly different. Smiles are on your brow, as you jostle through the street, yet your elbow touches him whose heart is torn with grief. Is there a merry-making in your family - are friends in congregation there with mirth, and dance, and song? How strange to think that it is scarce a step to the couch of suffering or the chamber of despair. The air is tremulous, perchance, with sighs and groans; and though our joyous strains overwhelm all sorrow's breathings, yet the sorrow still exists even when we hear it not. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pencil Sketches While traveling in Europe, I kept a journal of each day's doings, sending home every week from twenty to forty pages. This was written early in the morning, late at night, between courses at dinner, on boats, on the cars, in railroad stations, in catacombs, in dungeons, among ruins, in palaces and on mountain tops. After returning home, at the request of my husband, I gathered these frag ments together and rewrote them, but with no thought of publication. The earnest solicitations of my friends led me to think that what has afforded me so much delight and profit, might possibly give pleasure to others; hence this humble volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Sketches: From the "Sketch Book" The residence Of people of fortune and refinement in the country has diffused a degree Of taste and elegance in rural economy, that descends to the lowest class. The very laborer, with his thatched cottage and narrow slip Of ground, attends to their embellishment, The trim hedge, the grass-plot before the door, the little flower-bed bordered with snug box, the wood bine trained up against the wall, and hanging its blossoms about the lattice, the pot Of flowers in the window, the holly, provi dently planted about the house, to cheat winter Of its dreariness, and to throw in a semblance Of green summer to cheer the fire side: all these bespeak the influence Of taste, flowing down from high sources, and pervading the lowest levels Of the pub lic mind. If ever Love, as poets sing, delights to visit a cot tage, it must be the cottage Of an English peasant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
