Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch of Thermodynamics The semi-historical character of the articles has been retained, although it is to a certain extent unsuited for a text-book. Want of time, and the desire to republish them in a form not very different from the original one, have been my reasons. I have added, for the benefit of the reader who has some knowledge of mathematics, developments of a somewhat more advanced character, mainly taken from the scattered papers of Sir W. Thomson. Book Handbook of Thermodynamic Tables and Diagrams

Download or read book Handbook of Thermodynamic Tables and Diagrams written by Charles Edward Lucke and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Thermodynamic Tables and Diagrams: A Selection of Tables and Diagrams From Engineering Thermodynamics Time is an important item in all engineering work and none the less so in computations, so that convenient tables and diagrams are most essential to the solution of such problems. In some cases graphic methods are the only means of solution; in others the problems may be solved directly without the use of formulas, and in still others certain steps may be shortened. In many engineering calculations no one is justified in using a complicated mathematical formula; if too much time be required to make the calculation in commercial work it will not be made, therefore indirect and often approximate methods are substituted. In such cases the nearest tabular or chart value must be used, and generally the result will be as accurate as the work requires. Book The Temperature Entropy Diagram Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Temperature Entropy Diagram Classic Reprint written by Charles William Berry and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperature-Entropy Diagram This little volume was prepared for the use of stu dents of thermodynamics, and therefore I have en deavored to bring together in logical order certain information concerning the construction, interpreta tion, and applications to engineering problems of the temperature-entropy diagram, which otherwise would not be readily available for them, as such information is scattered throughout various treatises. The book is not intended for the advanced student, as he is already familiar with its contents, neither is it expected that one entirely ignorant of thermodynamics can use it to advantage, as the reader is assumed to have an ele mentary knowledge _of the fundamental theory and equations. An exhaustive treatment has not been attempted, but it is believed that the graphical presen tation here given will aid the student to a clearer comprehension of the fundamental principles of thermo dynamics and make it possible for him to read under. Book Thermodynamics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Thermodynamics Classic Reprint written by J. E. Emswiler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thermodynamics In the second place, wherever Mble, the student is presented at the beginning of a section of the subject, with a schematic diagram of an actual heat engine Whose prin ciple is to be exemplified. This plan seems to establish a thread of relationship among the several articles that follow, and tends to keep the student anchored to a rather definite conception, and to prevent the development from becoming, for him, a mere abstraction. Book A Text Book of Thermodynamics

Download or read book A Text Book of Thermodynamics written by James Riddick Partington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Thermodynamics: With Special Reference to Chemistry The modern developments of the science are considered in the last two chapters. The last chapter can be regarded only as a fragmentary sketch of the subject, but a more complete treatment, in view of the limitations of space and the very rapid way in which the theories are undergoing alteration, appeared undesirable. In the preparation of the book, most of the existing treatises have been consulted, but in the majority of cases I have preferred to use the original literature of the subject. All the diagrams were drawn specially for the book; in this connection my best thanks are due to Mr. R. T. Hardman, M.sc. For valuable assistance. Book Lessons on Thermodynamics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lessons on Thermodynamics Classic Reprint written by Robert Edward Baynes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons on Thermodynamics The substance of the following Lessons formed a course of Lectures on Thermodynamics which were delivered at the Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford, in Hilary Term 1876. They have been revised, and are now published in the hope of supplying a complete English Mathematical Introduction to the Dynamical Theory of Heat. No such treatise exists at present Professor Rankine's Manual of Me steam-engine ana' oz/zer Prime Movers, being written for the use chiefly of practical Engineers, contains only a short sketch of the subject; Professor Tait's Tkermodyaamz'es gives very valuable information as to the history of the theory and its place in the general Science of Energy, but is too brief for the wants of the student; and Professor Clerk Maxwell in his T/zeory of Heal has not gone far into the Mathematical Development, though in other respects the work is most valuable and perhaps the most suggestive that has been written on the subject. To this last book the present writer owes his first knowledge of Thermodynamics, and takes this opportunity of acknowledging his great obligations to it. Book A Text Book of Thermo Chemistry and Thermodynamics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book of Thermo Chemistry and Thermodynamics Classic Reprint written by Otto Sackur and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104 Book of Thermo-Chemistry and Thermodynamics If we wish to study the laws of the flow of heat, we must introduce exact measures for the merely psychological conceptions of heat and temperature, which we have been considering hitherto. Our sensation of temperature cannot help us in this, as sensations cannot be compared with one another quantitatively. We cannot perform a measurement of heat or of temperature until we have found some physical property of a body which varies uniquely and continuously with its thermal condition, and which can be measured in time and space by one of the ordinary scientific methods. Fortunately experiment has Shown us that there are a great many physical properties of bodies which vary uniquely in this way with their thermal condition, and which may all, therefore, be used for the measurement of heat or of temperature. Nearly all the physical properties of a body are altered when it is heated. One of the easiest properties to measure is the volume. A body occupies more space when it is hot than when it is cold. We say, therefore, that heat causes expansion, and cold causes contraction. The property of expansion on heating is common to all bodies with very few exceptions (one exception is water between 0 and and is generally used as the basis of temperature measurements. The expansion on heating is most marked in the case of gases, and was noticed first in them; as early as 100 we find this property of gases made use of by Hero of Alexandria in some ingenious experiments. In the case of liquids and solids the expansion is much less noticeable; in the latter case it is even somewhat difficult to determine. Gases and liquids are most suitable for the measurement of temperature, and for the construction of temperature measuring instruments, or thermometers, as they are called. The gas thermometer was discovered by Liquid thermometers were introduced later. Fig. 1 is a diagram of Galileo's air thermometer, Fig. 2 of a liquid thermometer as used at the present day.
