Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch of the History of Israel and Judah The following Sketch first appeared as the article Isbael in the Encydopoedia Britannica in 1881. It was afterwards reprinted in 1885, as an appendix to the English translation of my Prolegomena. That volnme is now out of print, and there were difficulties in the way of an immediate reissue of the Prolegomena which dp not apply to a simple reprint of the historical sketch. Noris there any intrinsic reason why the two should not be separated; the latter therefore now appears, for the third time, as an independent booklet. Book The Kings of Israel and Judah Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Kings of Israel and Judah Classic Reprint written by George Rawlinson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kings of Israel and Judah The Books of Kings and Chronicles form the main stjurce for the History of the Kings of Israel and Judah. They require, however, to be supplemented, especially for the later kings, by a careful study of the Prophetical Scriptures, particularly of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Amos, Micah, Habakkuk and Zephaniah. Local colouring, the life and manners of the time, and the feelings of those contemporary with the events described, are derivable almost wholly from this latter source, which furnishes them often in tolerable abundance. The "Antiquities" of Josephus supply less material than might have been expected, and the character of all additional material derived from this quarter requires to be weighed in the scales of a careful and sober criticism. Considerable light is thrown on the history of some of the kings by contemporary notices contained in the monuments of Egypt and Assyria. It has been the endeavour of the writer, so far as the limits of space allowed, to make full use of all these various sources of information. His labours have been much lightened by the excellent work done by many of his predecessors in the field of Sacred History, as especially by the writers of the articles on the several kings in Dr. Smith's "Dictionary of the Bible," Kitto's "Biblical Cyclopaedia," Winer's "Realworterbuch," and Ersch and Gruber's "Cyclopadie." Book The History of Israel and Judah

Download or read book The History of Israel and Judah written by Alfred Edersheim and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Israel and Judah: From the Decline of the Two Kingdoms to the Assyrian and Babylonian Captivity, Being the Seventh and Concluding Volume, Containing Full Scripture Reference and Subject Indexes to the Whole Series The volume herewith introduced to the reader brings, according to the original plan of the series, this Bible History to a close. This circumstance naturally suggests a retrospect, however brief. In the Prefaces to preceding volumes, the chief characteristics of each period were successively sketched, and the questions indicated to which they gave rise, as well as the special points in respect of which the treatment of one part of this History differed from another. The period over which the present volume extends - that from the decline to the fall of the Kingdoms of Judah and Israel - can scarcely be said to have any distinguishing features of its own. It is the natural outcome and the logical conclusion of the history which had preceded. It means that this History, as presented in Holy Scripture, is one and consistent in all its parts; or, to put it otherwise, that what God had from the first said and done with reference to Israel was true. Thus, as always, even the judgments of God point to His larger mercies. In two respects, however, this period differs from the others, and its history required a somewhat different treatment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Israel and Judah: From the Reign of Ahab to the Decline of the Two Kingdoms Thus much must for the present suffice - the more so, as in the next Volume (which will conclude the Old Testament History) the opportunity will necessarily present itself for larger retrospect and wider survey. It only remains to add that the treatment of the subject in this Volume will be found in ac cordance with the progressive plan of this work, repeatedly in dicated in previous Volumes. Alike the critical and exegetical notes will be found more frequent and more full, and the general treatment more detailed, and designed for more ad vanced readers. A new Element in the present Volume is the light brought to bear on this period from the ancient monu ments. We live in days when more attention than ever before is given to the critical study of the Old Testament 3 in days also when attacks are chiefly directed against the trustworthiness, the credibility, and, as it seems to us, the Divine Authority, in its true sense, of the Old Testament. There are those, we will gladly believe, who can disjoint, and in logical connection with it, re-interpret the Old Testament, and yet retain their full faith in its direct Divine character, and in its preparation for the Christ. We must frankly confess that we are not of their number. There is, indeed, a general Divine character in the Old Testament, and a general preparation in it for the New, whatever historical views we may take of it, or whatever inter pretations we may give of it. We would even advance beyond this, and say that Christ and Christianity have their absolute truth, quite irrespective of the Old Testament. But to us at least Jesus of Nazareth as the Christ is the direct outcome of the Old Testament, as well as its higher fulfilment: not only a light to lighten the Gentiles, but, and even in this very respect also the glory of Thy people Israel. Book The Kings and Prophets of Israel and Judah

Download or read book The Kings and Prophets of Israel and Judah written by Charles Foster Kent and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kings and Prophets of Israel and Judah: From the Division of the Kingdom to the Babylonian Exile The three centuries and a half, which began with the division of the Hebrew empire and extended to the Babylonian exile, were in many ways the most important period in Israel's history. It was during this epoch that the Israelites ceased to be a provincial people, limited in their outlook to the narrow horizon of Palestine. Events over which they had little control brought them into close contact with the great world powers of the day, thereby vastly broadening their faith, as well as their vision of history and of their relation to the human race. It was a period marked by supreme political, social and religious crises, which fundamentally transformed Israels religion and institutions. These crises called forth the great ethical prophets of the eighth and seventh centuries B.C.; and their work and teachings made Israels experience during these trying years one of the most significant chapters in human history. These prophets were the conscience of their nation, its guides in the hour of peril, and the heralds of those great ethical and social principles which are the eternal foundations of law and society. The social evils with which they dealt were in many ways startlingly similar to those which still survive in our modern Christian civilization. Interpreted into the language of the twentieth century, their messages anticipate the conclusions and teachings of our keenest and most progressive social teachers. In pointing out popular errors in the existing social system, and in placing the responsibility for the prevailing evils squarely on the shoulders of the rich and powerful, who were using their authority and influence, not in behalf of the common welfare, but rather for their own personal advantage or for that of their class, they spoke to the present as well as to their own age. In their character and life-work, as well as in their words, they embodied the noblest ideals of intelligent, unselfish and effective patriotism. They were men who not only saw the truth but were equally able and effective in proclaiming it by word and deed. Download or read book The Decline and Fall of the Kingdom of Judah Classic Reprint written by T. K. Cheyne and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Decline and Fall of the Kingdom of Judah The time has not come, however, to revise these results. I have, therefore, provisionally adopted the generally accepted statements. Professor Eerdmans' relative conservatism in textual matters makes it unwise to follow him implicitly, suggestive as his recent work on the composition of Genesis may be. I am, however, glad of his support in the view that the narrators of Genesis, generally speaking, believed in more than one god. If he has ignored my own work, that is no reason why I should ignore or depreciate his. Part II. contains a study of the Israelite law-books, with the exception of the Priestly Code, which, though it certainly contains a kernel of older date, is in its present form naturally considered to be post-exilic. Both here and elsewhere the point of view is that set forth in Traditions and Beliefs and in the Introduction, which, while recognising both direct and indirect Babylonian influence on Palestine, finds in the extant evidence a larger amount of reference to N. Arabian influence, both political and religious. In conclusion, I may draw attention to a passage in the Introduction relative to the one-sided character of the literary monuments of the pre-exilic period, which helps to account for the large number of problems which are very plausibly solved by the N. Arabian theory. I think that this suggestion makes for peace. The present condition of the study of the Old Testament is far from satisfactory; there is still a sad amount of partisanship, though the points at issue have changed. Download or read book Heroes of Israel Classic Reprint written by W. Garden Blaikie and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of Israel This volume was written at the suggestion of the late Mr. Thomas Nelson, among whose latest projects the issue of a series of Bible biographies, illustrated from the historical and topographical materials which modern research has supplied, had a prominent place. The field has already been traversed in some degree by the present writer in his "Manual of Bible History in Connection with the General History of the World." But the limits of that book afforded little opportunity of doing what has been attempted here - to draw full-size portraits of some of the great men of the Bible, and to place them as living characters before the eye of the reader. The author is deeply sensible that while it is possible to throw no little light from modern sources on the Scripture narrative, it will ever retain, in its brevity, simplicity, and graphic power, that incomparable character which in all ages has been felt to be so emphatic an evidence of the divinity of its origin. Book excerpt: Steering a middle course between those who argue that a history of Israel can no longer be written because the sources that we have prove inadequate, and what now seems to be the extreme conservatism of the old classic, John Bright's History of Israel, this book presents all the problems and where they cannot be resolved, provides the evidence and leaves the reader with the current situation.

C This book is designed to do nothing more than outline the history of J udea in the centuries that elapsed between the prophesying of Malachi and the event that forms the first theme of the New Testament. To trace in some detail the fortunes Of the holy race in Babylon also, in Alexandria, in Rome, and in the Dispersion generally, would have been of much interest, but was forbidden bv the conditions of space. An attempt has been made throughout to keep the Jews Of Palestine in the foreground, and to restrain whatever deviations eastwards or westwards might fairly be regarded as digressions.
