It lies at the bottom of Massachusetts Bay, and is one of many pear-shaped peninsulas formerly attached to the mainland only by narrow marshy necks, which fringed the shores of the Bay. The Charles River, once more than double its present width, divides it from the similar promontory of Charlestown (the site of the Battle of Bunker Hill), on the other side of which the Mystic River, uniting.with the Charles, flows into the harbor. The latest determination gives the latitude of Boston, 42 2' 27.6" north, and 5 59' 18" east longitude from Washington, and 7l 3' 30" west from Greenwich. When it is noon in Boston it is four o clock forty-four minutes and fourteen seconds at Greenwich, and thirty-six minutes past eleven at Washington, which is distant by railroad four hundred and fifty miles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report by the Commission Appointed to Investigate the Subject of the Annexation of Certain Neighboring Cities and Towns to the City of Boston Muddy River district, not including the area of the low district east of the Brookline station, is acres. The Charles River basin is too large for its outlet, at the present time, and this difficulty will increase instead of diminish if any further encroachments are permitted by increasing the width or number of the bridges between Boston and Cambridge and Charlestown, and the force and velocity of the currents in the tidal basin, already too small, will be still further reduced with a corresponding increase of deposits. This basin not only receives a large proportion of the sewage of Boston and Cambridge, but also the sewage of Brighton, Watertown, Newton and Waltham. The sewage of these towns is not very large, as they have no system of public water supply; but the introduction of water will be accompanied with systems of sewerage by which the amount will be greatly increased. The natural source of supply for these towns is the Charles River; and, as it is evident that a considerable amount of its water will first be contaminated by use, and then returned to the river as far below the towns as possible, the effect will be to increase the objectionable accumulations in the basin. There are several plans by which such a nuisance could be abated, - one is the construction of a marginal sewer to intercept the sewage and convey it to a point where it will be dissipated at once by the action of the tidal currents; another to remove the accumulations by dredging; either of these plans would be exceedingly expensive. The size of the basin might be reduced to such an extent as only to leave a channel through which the current would run with such velocity that there could be no deposits. As the several commissions on Boston Harbor have advanced the theory that preservation of this basin intact is necessary for the protection of the inner harbor from shoaling, and its capacity should be increased rather than diminished, this plan is not feasible. Under these circumstances, the manner in which the sewage of districts under consideration can be conveyed to some less objectionable place than the Charles River basin' becomes of the greatest importance. Other cities may exceed her in population, in wealth, in manufacturing, or in commerce; but we can never forget that Puritan Boston was the birthplace of American Independence. Her streets are narrow and crooked, but they wind among scenes of historic interest, which recall vividly the great drama here enacted by the heroes of the Revolution. Within the area known as Greater Boston the combined forces of the thirteen colonies first acted in unison as one nation. Here the minute-men of Lexington, of Concord, and of Bunker Hill met the confident grenadiers of Old England with blows so sudden and power ful as to disconcert even the veterans of King George's army. Although Boston has become modernized to a great extent, many relics of the old, historic town still remain intact. Shall we not, then, walk through her winding streets and look upon some of these ancient landmarks. For a starting point let us rendezvous at old North Square. This was to Historic Boston what Copley Square is to the city of the present day. In the early years the centre of the fashionable quarter, it has gradually become cosmopolitan in its character, until today its population is faithfully represented by the characteristic group before us. Sandwiched in between the lofty walls of the modern buildings on either side, we see one of the very few examples remaining in the city of houses built with the projecting second story. During the stir ring times preceding the Revolution, this house was the home of Paul Revere, and, on the first anniversary of the Boston Massacre, in its windows were displayed illuminated pictures of that dreadful scene, drawn by Revere's own hand. Boston is using every effort to enlarge her business, although, even now, a balky horse or an overturned coal-cart, in one of her narrow streets, can arrest the business of the city until the obstruction is removed; and by that delay cause men to break important engagements, travellers to lose the cars or steamboats, and create general inconvenience for the whole business community. Last summer, it is said that fifteen miles of freight cars were waiting at one time to be unloaded, and this winter our railroads have been obliged to refuse or hold back western freight because of our inability to handle and store it. These facts cannot be ignored; and if the city is too small or inconvenient for the present business, what will she do with the increase that must follow new railroads and canals, and new investments of energy and capital? Mathematics teach us that what is true of a part of any body is true of its whole; and this we can apply to the domestic and business wants of a growing city, as well as to men's private affairs. If a farmer's barn cannot hold his crops he builds larger and better. Manufacturers extend their mills and warehouses to meet the increasing demands of their business. Merchants plan roads and railroads, build wharves and ships, and try in all legitimate ways to increase their opportunities for doing business.
