Book The Cromwellian Settlement of Ireland

Download or read book The Cromwellian Settlement of Ireland written by John P. Prendergast and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legacy of Oliver Cromwell is still haunts the Irish imagination. His alleged directive to the Catholic Irish to get ""to Hell or Connaught,"" and the policy that drove it, permanently altered the ownership of Irish soil. The Parliamentary forces' civil war against Charles I were enmeshed in a ruthless campaign against popery and the Catholic perpetrators of the assault on the Protestant colonists of 1641. The legacy of sectarianism has marred Irish politics to this day. Prendergast's research reveals his keen eye for evidence. His dismissal of the colonists' claims about the nature of the uprising of 1641 and his attitudes to race are contested, but he was a man of his times. More significantly his prejudices did not blind him and he lets his sources speak for themselves, while his analytical mind identifies the underlying economic motivation and forces behind the apparently civilising religious mission driving the settlement.

Book Psalms of the Early Buddhists

Download or read book Psalms of the Early Buddhists written by A F Rhys Davids and published by . This book was released on 2024-01-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Psalms of the Early Buddhists" or "The Psalms of the Early Buddhists" it is a compilation of verses from the Pali Canon, the oldest collection of Buddhist scriptures. The Pali Canon is the primary religious scripture of Theravada Buddhism, and it contains teachings attributed to Gautama Buddha. In this particular collection, A. F. Rhys Davids has translated and compiled verses that express the thoughts and aspirations of early Buddhists. The term "psalms" draws a parallel with the Psalms of the Bible, indicating that these verses have a similar devotional and reflective quality. The book provides insight into the spiritual and philosophical aspects of early Buddhism through the words of the Buddha and his disciples. It offers a glimpse into the practices, beliefs, and ethical principles of the early Buddhist community. If you are interested in Buddhist scriptures and want to explore the foundational teachings of Buddhism, "Psalms of the Early Buddhists" can be a valuable resource.

Book A History of the Philippines

Download or read book A History of the Philippines written by Renato Constantino and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1975 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike other conventional histories, the unifying thread of A History of the Philippines is the struggle of the peoples themselves against various forms of oppression, from Spanish conquest and colonization to U.S. imperialism. Constantino provides a penetrating analysis of the productive relations and class structure in the Philippines, and how these have shaped―and been shaped by―the role of the Filipino people in the making of their own history. Additionally, he challenges the dominant views of Spanish and U.S. historians by exposing the myths and prejudices propagated in their work, and, in doing so, makes a major breakthrough toward intellectual decolonization. This book is an indispensible key to the history of conquest and resistance in the Philippine.

Book Marco Polo the Description of the World A C Moule and Paul Pelliot

Download or read book Marco Polo the Description of the World A C Moule and Paul Pelliot written by Marco Polo and published by . This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is by far the most complete and most authoritative translation of the work of Marco Polo (1254-1324). It is based on a manuscript found by Sir Percival David (1892-1964) in the Catedral de Toledo in Spain where it had lain forgotten for 130 years. That manuscript was a copy written in 1795 and was in turn based on a manuscript written in about 1400. The manuscript in Cathedral de Toledo is in Latin. Arthur Christopher Moule (1873-1957) painstakingly transcribed it into type written text. He was so careful to be faithful to the original that he even transcribed meaningless punctuation marks. The Latin text was published as Volume 2 in 1935, even though it was published first. Volume One followed three years later and was published in 1938. After first publishing the Latin original, A. C. Moule went to work translating the Latin into English. Here he gives credit to his predecessors, Giovanni Battista Ramusio (1485-1557) and Sir Henry Yule (1820-1899). Yule's work was published by his daughter in 1903. A. C. Moule was gratified when his translations often came out the same as theirs. A. C. Moule took 17 different versions of the Marco Polo manuscripts. He then combined them into one document by putting into italics those words that are not found in the other versions. Then, on the outside margins and sometimes in the footnotes, he uses a code to show where and in which version the words in italics can be found. He was careful to note the differences. Every word that is different from the words of Ramusio or Yule is put in italics. In addition, there is a chart showing where the page numbers to this work are different from the page numbers of the other translations. Thus, a reader looking at a page of this book can quickly find the equivalent page in the Yule work.
